There is a long standing perception that treating cancer in children in low and middle income countries is not cost effective and, as a result, there has been less investment in this area than many higher profile counterparts such as HIV and malaria.

In an innovative and compelling paper, Nickhill Bhakta, Fellow in Haematology/Oncology at St Jude's Lutheran children's hospital, Tennessee, debunks this myth. Basing his model on two common cancers he elegantly demonstrates that the majority of children can easily be treated well within the cost effective criteria set by the WHO.

In this podcast, he tells ADC Global Health editor Nick Brown that rethinking the approach to this group of largely curable diseases is overdue.
