Most of us try to change soley on the conscious level. Which is only 3-5% of the actual mind power we use in a day. Its like putting a bandaid on a deep open wound.
The other 95% are our unconscious blocks and core beliefs that are running the show in our everyday life. Until we address the deeper blocks, we will almost always sabotage or lose whatever result we create.
