How can we redefine self-care?
Show Notes: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/053
"...my ultimate self-care ritual was turning into an anxiety-creating monster." ~Andrea KlunderIt's November -- my BIRTHDAY MONTH!!!
It's the time of year, where the weather begins to chill, leaves fall from the trees (at least here in the midwest), and nature is calling us to go inside, snuggle up with a cup of tea or cocoa and become more introspective. And yet, the winter holidays are right around the corner and they are so contra to that natural cozy, introspective instinct. They call upon us to give, and go, and move through space and eat sugary goodness... it can be exhausting.
So let's explore how in the midst of our work, in the midst of our daily lives, in the flow of everything else, and in the chaos of the holidays, we can create an attitude of self-care that doesn't require us to check-out from everything else around us.
"When I had a full-time job, I would get giddy with the idea of taking a mental health day from work using one of my sick days and yet, ever since I became self-employed... I have a really hard time taking mental health days without feeling guilty." ~Andrea Klunder Resources & Links King Spa (one of my favorite places on earth) NEW! 2018 Creative Collective Studio Memberships available in Chicago AND globally The Creative Impostor Magic page! "Women are ready to speak their voices, raise their voices, lift their voices because we've been quiet for too long. We are ready stop the destruction of the world. We're ready to heal these conversations around money and finances. We're ready to heal these conversations about having your period. It is a part of our life. Please deal with it… look at it, understand it. It's not going away." ~Tonya Gonzalez
I've been following Tonya Gonzalez on social media for a while -- connected by a mutual friend, both in life and in spirit, we are definitely fans of each other's crafts!
Tonya calls herself a tarot life coach, using her psychic gifts, tarot cards, crystals, essential oils, incantations and spells to support her coaching practice and clients. In this episode, she tells the incredible story of how she went from bussing and waiting tables at a restaurant in Key West, to being voted the #3 psychic in the world on a hit reality TV show in Kiev, Ukraine. Tonya even does a LIVE tarot reading for me about money -- a perfect segue to her new book, "The Little Book of Woo Woo: Prayers, Incantations & Spells for Loot, Love & Life."

"Failure is okay, and you learn so much from failure… you would never know that unless you actually took the risk." ~Nikki
You don't have to do this alone...
Nikki and I discovered each other at a creative women's mentoring brunch, but we didn't actually meet... until she reached out to me after the fact and NOW we are huge fans of each other and THAT is exactly what Nikki does -- make connections.
Another thing she does really well is business branding and reinvention -- which she just did! In the episode, you're going to hear me talking about Gab Lab, and all of it is true but between our conversation and now, she has rebranded her creative coaching business to FemiNest and, well... it's a perfect new iteration of Nikki and everything she empowers her coaching clients to do.

"A lot of times we start things… we set a big goal, we create a big vision for ourselves, and we announce it on Facebook… and then somewhere along the way, it gets difficult, we meet with that resistance, we start falling short…" ~Andrea Klunder
It's the murky, muddy middle...
Our theme for the upcoming month is all about working with professional coaches to help navigate resistance to change, make connections, and trust your own magic. In this episode, hear what I'm feeling resistance around these days and get the scoop on what I WANT to do next.

"We're all different and that's part of human nature, to celebrate those differences." -Sarah Dennis
Calling in, rather than calling out…
In this episode, I had the privilege to discuss the history and the current reality of racism in our society as well as the potential for change from the inside out (and the outside in) with educator Sarah Dennis and artist & activist Ashley Lana Scott.
Sarah and Ashley had never met before so this was a truly candid conversation about what it takes to be an ally, how to support one another in looking inward at our internalized racism (regardless of skin color), and why these sometimes uncomfortable conversations are crucial to the cultural dialogue. (BTW, that's the difference between calling in and calling out… IN is initiating a conversation, OUT is pointing a finger in an accusatory way.)
Of course we talk about impostor syndrome and feeling like a total fraud when trying to have said difficult conversations, too!
This is a conversation that is humorous, sensitive, hopeful and deeply thought-provoking.
So take a deep breath, relax your mind open, have a listen, and let me know what you think over in the Facebook Group…
And if you haven't already, check out Episode 045: Talking to strangers, where you'll hear how I met Julie and why I'm taking on a theme on the show that pushes me out of my comfort zone. Also, Episode 046 with Andrea Ranae Johnson on how to use your power and privilege for good.

"At the end of the day, the thing that is pulling the strings is our silence, on every side, and that silence is deadly. Like Sarah was saying, when you allow yourself to feel that shame and then you don't want to do anything about it, you allow it to overcome your action, it makes the decision for you… I suggest getting your hands dirty with that shame." -Ashley Lana Scott

"I actually like the word 'co-conspirator' better, I think 'ally' is really soft and wimpy. For me it's not a call to action, being an ally. But being a co-conspirator makes me feel like, "I want to dismantle this system and I'm going to do anything I can to figure out what that looks like." -Sarah Dennis
