  • 036: Transform the trauma, Monica Martin

"We are so in a reactive mode, in our heads, trying to make meaning… we don't allow ourselves time just to slow down and notice what is happening right now." ~Monica Martin

The process of becoming who we are…

Monica Martin is the woman you want with you whenever you're feeling uncertain. Her presence and incredibly soothing voice always give me the feeling that everything is going to be okay — or even better than okay. AND in this interview Monica shares how to tap into and trust that grounding, connected energy within yourself through meditation, visualization, "felt-sense" experiencing in your body, process art and… boxing!

"Boxing has been one of THE biggest parts of my healing… it's so important that, especially now, people find a way to express their emotions in a physical activity… because it helps you actually transmute the emotions and it helps you find your own way of expression." ~Monica Martin

  • 035: Impostor vs Intuition

"The impostor voice wants to protect you by keeping you small and safe. The intuitive voice wants to help you by elevating your platform to rise to the occasion. It may be risky. But it's probably worth it." ~Andrea Klunder

So when you have both the voice of your creative impostor AND the voice of your deepest intuition clamoring for attention in your brain, how on earth do you know who is saying what and who to listen to?

Well, you need mad tools, skills and support!

  • 034: Step into your power with tarot, Charlotte Elea of Dream Intuition

"The power that I am craving, the leadership that I am craving externally to me — I am not going to find that in somebody else. I need to find that within myself." ~Charlotte Elea, on intuitive leadership (and politics)

Remove the intimidation for yourself and transform it into an opportunity to play… Charlotte Elea has been my tarot muse since January of 2017. Her playful approach to using tarot and oracle cards, as well as dreams and meditation, to learn to hear and trust your own intuition has really taken my practice, my teaching and my creative work in a new direction. • 033: How podcasting & meditation saved me…

"I eventually came to a turning point where I realized that from here, anything was possible. I started listening to entrepreneurial podcasts, and financial podcasts, creativity podcasts and "how-to-podcast" podcasts… I was able to shift my view just enough from "no options" to "infinite options!" ~Andrea Klunder

How podcasting and meditation saved me from bankruptcy, depression and impostor syndrome…

I launched my first business in 2008. Infuse Yoga Spa was my vision for an urban oasis of holistic health, wellbeing and community in the middle of the concrete jungle of Chicago. I wrote a business plan, quit my "day job" of 8 years in arts administration and took the leap with confidence, energy, a little bit of savings and a generous loan from my parents and two uncles.

5 years later, in 2013, I locked the door to the beautiful vintage storefront for the last time, dropped the keys through the mail slot, drove the Zipcar packed with my last few personal items halfway to my new apartment and then pulled over underneath the el train tracks to sob uncontrollably, saying good-bye at last to my dream.

What followed was an intense period of mourning and probably the first time I have ever truly experienced depression. I was bankrupt, not eating well, at a loss for what to do next and, in fact, completely uninspired to do much of anything, especially teach yoga. Most days I just wanted to stay under the covers and hide.

So what happened next? Listen to Episode 033 and find out!

"Of course, there's always going to be challenge and risk and failure and now I can finally add to that something that looks like success to me." ~Andrea Klunder

  • 032: Engage your curiosity, Jennifer Gardner of RoamHowl

I really enjoy… confronting the fear… going through it, because I find that's where life is. It's confronting what you're most terrified of and working through it and getting to the other side of that. So I'm confronting my fear all the time. ~Jennifer Gardner

    The thrill of the "doing"…

I met Jennifer Gardner because she took a risk. Already a litigating lawyer with a thriving private practice in Los Angeles, Jennifer (who is also an outstanding photographer BTW), decided to follow her curiosity and create a podcast, called RoamHowl. And she reached out to me, someone whose show she had heard, but whom she had never met for help in launching!

RoamHowl is a series of conversations with multi-talented, multi-passionate people doing really cool, interesting things.

Jennifer is out to discover stories and communicate them to help her listeners "find their pack" and to debunk the myth that you either are creative or you're not, and to show that you are not defined solely by your profession — but you can in, in fact, be more.

It's just been miles and miles of clicks that led me to this place… just curiosity, following this lead, following that lead and now, here I am! ~Jennifer Gardner, on discovering podcasts, resources, and connections online

It's the way I choose to be engaged with the world. I love to get a pedicure and a facial, but those are the things that suffer. I don't neglect my health, but pedicures and manicures? I don't have time for that! ~Jennifer Gardner, on managing her time, professional & creative pursuits

  • 031: Your Shadow & Mine

"When you are operating from the acceptance of your whole self, YOU get to choose your path and actions freely, because there is nothing behind you from which you are running." ~Andrea Klunder, on liberation from the Shadow

What are all the things about yourself that you would NEVER share on social media?

Ever since editing my interview with artist Sara Zalek in Episode 030, this topic of the Shadow Self has been nagging at me because it comes up a LOT in the type of work I do and I always THINK I want to explore it but… This Shadow is also deeply complicit with impostor syndrome to stop me from working on creating new content or developing marketing strategies or recording episodes. For example, these days, I tell myself I'm going to work on my forthcoming Podcast Envy training program and course in the evening and then I walk through the door and feel sleepy, my head is cloudy and all I can think about is dinner, a bath and snuggling up next to my kitty to CONSUME content (rather than create.) And I end stuffing down my own shadowy self watching a newly engrossing glossy TV series about OTHER peoples'/characters' shadow sides on Netflix or HBO… (Big Little Lies anyone?)

And then I feel like a failure.

The thing I love most and also the hardest thing about entrepreneurship and sustaining creative ventures like this podcast is that you cannot do it (and keep doing it) without at some point having to really take a hard look at yourself, delve deeply into this shadow, understand it, learn to work with it and then… grow. I remember lamenting to one of my best friends on the phone after a particularly difficult season of rejections and failures both of personal and professional nature… "God, haven't I grown enough yet?! I'm sick of it. When do I just get to coast?" So what is this Shadow of which I speak? Listen to Episode 031 and find out!

"It brought up ALL the insecurities, frustration, self-doubt and anxiety over every moment I have ever felt invisible in my life." ~Andrea Klunder

  • 030: Invoke the spark of transformation, Sara Zalek of Butoh Chicago

"Whenever there's a dare in my life, I say, 'Oh yeah? You're going to dare me? Then I'm going to show you that I can do it!"; ~Sara Zalek, on creating the first Post-Butoh Festival in Chicago (after being told it could never work)

    We are in a moment…

I discovered Sara Zalek's work through my Edwin Ruiz (my audio engineer and founder of Mondo Machine) when he was producing video for Butoh Chicago and again during a multi-media experience of Expanded Cinema when he was collaborating with Full Spectrum Features.

Sara's performance that night was the highlight of the evening. Edgy, uncomfortable, mysterious, beautiful –– she integrated a dance between rigid and fluid, slow and manic body movement along with a colorful analog video experiment projected behind her and electronic and acoustic music accompanying her highly improvisational experience that somehow was both coherent and evocative.

This was a collaborative piece called Still Life with Hanna Brock and Sara Goodman and, in fact, a lot of Sara's work is collaborative and "in the moment," exploring the life journey, full of ups and downs and dark and light.

She seeks to challenge or provoke her audience with the question: Are you going to embrace your whole self? Are you going to have memories and associations while watching this performance that have this potential for transforming your way of being and thinking in the world?

  • 029: New Year Alternatives (resolution-free!)

"It's safe and OK for you to relax and take in that all those things that happened, they're over and you don't have to be stuck there. " ~from How to Wrap Up Loose Ends of 2016 and Start the New Year Fresh! By Tapas Fleming, Founder TAT®

I declare that I DISLIKE New Year's resolutions.

And I dislike the pervasive marketing message "New Year, New You" even MORE! What was wrong with the OLD me???

What I DO like is opportunities to be reflective, fresh starts, setting intentions and creating visions.

I like getting really quiet and listening to my own inner wisdom guide voice, taking a deep breath and taking a step in a new direction.

I have some favorite New Year rituals that have replaced resolutions (that never really seem to stick anyway). And because one of the themes of The Creative Impostor is community, I decided to crowdsource some new new year rituals and exercises share with you and shake things up for 2017.

    My Favorite Ritual: Gratitude 108
    1. Take a sheet of paper or your journal and number it from 1 to 108.Or better yet, get a preprinted sheet here (because it takes a long time to write 108 numbers)!
    2. Write down (without stopping) 108 things for which you are grateful. It's just like a mad-lib full of nouns: could be people, places, things, ideas, experiences — just keep writing until you reach 108. If you get stuck, just think of any small thing that has touched you in the year. And when you reach the end, sit quietly, take a few deep breaths and notice how you feel.

  • 028: Heal your heart, Lysa Black

"I believe the role of an empath is that of a healer, a bringer of truth. someone that has reclaimed their own truth and can create space for other people to be able to more deeply connect with their own truth as well." ~Lysa Black

Emotions are communication from our own soul.

I met Lysa through the Singularity Circle, a mastermind of creative feminine entrepreneurs facilitated by Isabelle Rizo from episode 026.

When I first received Lysa's 2nd book Divine Purpose, I was thinking okay… here comes the "woo woo," but it's actually so grounded in her personal experience AND the experiences of clients with whom she has worked over the years.

And then when we did our interview, we had so many technical difficulties with Skype connections and internet and microphones and delays, well, I wasn't sure what we were going to end up with AND it took me a long while to edit the interview. It turns out the timing was perfect. I re-listened post-U.S. presidential election, during which I had a disturbing and unusually intense emotional response (which you'll hear about in the episode) and what Lysa shares helped me to figure out what the heck was going on with me!

In this episode, you'll learn about:
    • How to know whether you are an empath or highly sensitive person and what to do with that
    • Repeating patterns and habits that stem from past trauma and how they show up in our present lives
    • Heart healing to move beyond those traumas and habits
    • Lysa's own struggles with disordered eating, anxiety, attracting romantic relationships, and impostor syndrome
    • Using our shadow side as a guide, a friend to point us in the right direction
    • The difference between ego and intuition
    • Lysa's path to stepping into her own power and path as a healer and author of two wonderful books

In this episode, you'll learn about:
    • Anxiety when your mind spirals into the past or future – real life example from foray into teaching Digital Journalism to high school students
    • "Being present" and how this brings confidence, clarity and wipes out impostor feelings in the moment
    • Shifting your mindset to get wisdom, insight and imagination from past & future
