  • He's Mr. Whatever! by Lori Yamamoto
    [Verse 1]
Ends crowded in a "me-shaped" bin!
World that sips its white wine, dead!
Feel the palace lakes of tin!
World will end in a shopping Vatican!
Don't you stand so blind and follow…
    He's Mr. Whatever!
    [Verse 2]
Someone told the people, “Someone has to…”
Ends below the Zombie buried follow!
    Don't that glassy someone understand?
Talks kind of churchy tower follow!
With below, “We people” to the Vatican!
    He's Mr. Whatever!
    [Chorus]
Head of people, just a glass maze!
Like crowded Subways to glass Vatican!
    Ends below
    In lakes and towers, too!
The below people judge from tower asylums!
Dad will with his will be buried asylum!
    He's Mr. Whatever!
    [Verse 3]
World of roses are for the followers!
A fool, we like to get the blame!
We below us in the metal dead!
To below, roses are our Vatican!
Don't that people look like a follower!
    He's Mr. Whatever!
    [verse 4]
A fool, frozen, hypnotic, take the blame!
Talk of blind and buried mailbox mayhem!
We dust palaces, it’s a shame
    Something crowded, the hypnotic "to-do"!
    The bland… the planned… the manned…
    HE'S MR. WHATEVER!
    …You know?

  • A Tiny Deep Sea by Lori Yamamoto
    The stone ledge is cold.
I am staring at the water.
    The koi are slow dreams,
orange and white and black thoughts
    moving without any sound.
    I feel like that girl
in the old movie you showed me.
    Full of angry want,
    wishing the Goblin King would
just please come and take it all.
    This pond is too small.
    My reflection is a stranger.
    Two options appear,
    both are beautiful and strange,
like a secret I must keep.
    Option one: lie back.
    Let my hair become riverweed.
    A quiet Ophelia.
    A dramatic, pretty ending.
(Maybe they would be sorry then.)
    Option two: a ship.
Not a pond, but a wide ocean.
    A lion at the prow.
To sail past the world’s last morning.
    To find a different sky.
    The koi kiss the surface.
They make a perfect, silent ‘O’.
    Is it a zero?
Or is it a whole new world?
They do not say to me.
    My mother calls out.
Her voice is a thread through the glass.
    “Lori, come inside.”
    The spell breaks into pieces.
I am just a girl again.
    I carry the pond
    inside my chest now, secretly.
    A tiny, deep sea
for dreaming of drowning or sailing.
    It is my own labyrinth.
Mother, it is all foolishness… right?
    Obviously.
    But the koi know.
    They are still swimming.

  • In The Man-House by Lori Yamamoto
    [Intro ]
    In this world…
    the mother herself…
    raises her daughter.
    The obvious reason…
    is to make sure…
that a girl knows the significance of the rules.
    To make sure…
that a girl understands the inevitable.
    The obvious reason…
is to make sure she knows
    that the prize…
    comes with a price tag.
    [Verse 1 ]
    Oh, I get it now.
    Here’s the mother…
    and then…
    all will have…
    adopted.
    It’s a **man-house**.
    A **freaking** man-house.
    [Chorus ]
    A dream we’ve seen of them all…
Hiding like rodents inside the wall.
Nobody grants wishes, nobody takes calls…
    In the **man-house**.
    In the **man-house**.
    [Verse 2 ]
    They teach the bend.
    They teach the mend.
They teach the “commend” to the end.
They blueprint the hip, they market the lip,
They sanctify the snip of the kinship.
    It’s a **freaking** man-house.
    [Chorus]
A teenage dream before the fall
Wears her jeans in the shopping mall.
She ain’t got credit, and no cash at all
    In the **man-house**.
    In the **man-house**.
    [Bridge]
    The obvious reason…
    The obvious season…
    The obvious treason…
Against the rules, against the tools,
Against the fools that act so cruel.
    Just a girl in a wrap…
For the map of the **man-house**.
    [Outro]
    A freaking…
    A breaking…
    A making…
    MAN-HOUSE!
    [Last spoken line, exhausted, cold]
The mother herself raises her daughter.
    Obviously.

  • Wandering Barefoot by Lori Yamamoto
    [Verse 1]
I am moving through the blue,
The wide and simple blue of being alive.
And my heart is not of iron,
It is never made of stone.
It is just soft wood where you
Could carve your name on a slow afternoon.
    [Chorus]
    Vulnerable… yes, that too.
I ask the dusty hinges, how long?
And they sigh back to me
    With their own small history.
    [Verse 2]
    And then… the light.
A warm rush, like someone opened
A door made from sunlight by mistake.
And they left it just that way.
    And truth comes wandering in,
    She is wandering in barefoot.
    [Chorus]
    Vulnerable… yes, that too.
I ask the dusty hinges, how long?
And they sigh back to me
    With their own small history.
    [Bridge]
The world becomes a new picture.
All the colors I forgot I could see,
They are stretching out their arms
In the open air for me.
My heart, open now, shows its red,
    Its life, its soft-animal self.
    Precious because it is real.
    [Verse 3]
    The sun splashes in, laughing,
    Laughing all the gray away.
And I hold this bright now,
And the long struggle that brought me here.
Both of them are telling the same story…
    One truth, with two voices,
    Humming together.
    [Outro]
    Humming together…
    Just humming.
    Yes.

  • Hello, Every Soul by Lori Yamamoto
