  • The Distance You Keep by Lori Yamamoto
    [Verse 1 - The Glass]
    I looked at your face.
The light was hitting the glass
    at an angle. I felt
    myself watching you. Not dropping.
    Just... watching. You were happening.
    [Verse 2 - The Step]
    Like a step you miss
in the dark. But I did not
    miss it. I just noticed
the way you looked at the floor
when you laughed. You cannot fake that.
    [Verse 3 - The Counting]
    I counted the lines
around your eyes. Not to count.
    Just to see them. Each
one is a small map of somewhere
you have been. I have not been there.
    [Verse 4 - The Running]
    You are always running,
    even when you sit still.
    I can hear the train
from here. It is not a sad sound.
It is just a sound. Like a breath.
    [Verse 5 - The Room]
    Why is it so hard
to just sit in the room? I do
    not know. But I am
sitting. You are sitting. That is
    already something. That is already.
    [Verse 6 - The Picture]
    If I knew what you
were looking for, I would tell
    you. But I do not.
I am not the girl who stays
in the picture. I move. I move.
    [Verse 7 - The Film]
    The film is old now.
    The colors are bleeding at
    the edges. But that is
not a sad thing. It just means
the film has been held. Has been looked at.
    [Verse 8 - The Leak]
    The cup has a leak.
It is okay. It is not
    a tragedy. It is
just a cup. I will drink it
faster. Or I will not drink it. Okay.
    [Verse 9 - The Distance]
    I think you are afraid
    of the distance
    you keep between your hands
    but distance is not empty.
    It is just... space
    [verse 10 - The End]
Space for the light to move through
    I am not unhappy
I am just watching you happen.
    That is different.
    Okay.

  • Holland (An Invitation for Kazumi) by Lori Yamamoto
    [Verse 1 - The Photo]
    I saw your picture.
    A Holland in Japan. Windmills
    and tulips. You stood
beside the wooden shoes. I thought:
she understands. She knows the mask.
    [Verse 2 - The Invitation]
    Come to our Holland.
Not the one in Japan. The one
    with Lake Michigan.
The dunes. The Big Red Lighthouse.
    The windmill that turns slowly.
    [Verse 3 - The Lake]
    Lake Michigan is big.
    Just water. Just sky.
The pier stretches out and stops.
The lake goes to the horizon.
    The light is different here.
    [Verse 4 - The Flute]
    I think you would like
the way the wind moves through the
    tulips. It sounds like
a flute playing a slow note.
Not "Hocus Pocus." Just the wind.
    [Verse 5 - The Focus]
    I know you carry
    Focus with you. The yodel.
    The classical lines.
    The aggression in the fingers.
I have heard you play. You are very good.
    [Verse 6 - The Masks]
    We wear masks here too.
The Dutch mask. The tulip mask.
    The mask of the lake.
But you know about masks. You have
worn the Dutch mask in Japan.
[Verse 7 - The Full Circle]
    It would be a full
    circle. From Japan to Holland
    to Holland again.
The water is the same water.
Just a different shore. Just a different light.
    [Verse 8 - The Walking]
    We could walk along
    Eighth Street. Eat a lemon
    ice. Watch the sunset
turn the lighthouse orange and gold.
You could play your flute. I could listen.
    [Verse 9 - The Smallness]
I do not know if you will come.
    But I wanted to ask.
Holland is not a big city.
It is a small city with a big lake.
And a windmill that turns very slowly.
    [Verse 10 - The Slowness]
I think you would like the slowness.
    After the speed of Tokyo.
After the precision of the studio.
    Just water. Just sky.
    [Outro]
Just a woman with a flute
and a woman with a song
    standing on the pier.
    That is the invitation.

  • Un Dono by Ernest Youngman
on temer, ché la nostra sorte
    Nessun maggior dolore
Amor, ch'a nullo amato amar perdona,
    Giustizia mosse il mio alto fattore;
    fecemi la divina potestate,
la somma sapïenza e 'l primo amore.
Dinanzi a me non fuor cose create
Amor, ch'a nullo amato amar perdona.
Ne l'etterno bando, in fuoco e in gelo.
    Ché, seggendo in piuma,
    in fama non si vien, né sotto coltre;
sanza la qual chi sua vita consuma,
cotal vestigio in terra di sé lascia,
qual fummo in aere e in acqua la schiuma.

    antichissima eppure sempre nuova.
    È l'antica, eterna storia d'amore.
Due innamorati sedevano su una panchina
del parco, i corpi vicini a sfiorarsi,
tenendosi per mano al chiaro di luna.
Tra loro regnava il silenzio. Il loro
amore era così profondo che non avevano
bisogno di parole per esprimerlo. E così
restavano seduti in silenzio, su quella
stelle. Sei tutto per me. Senza di te, la
mia esistenza non avrebbe ragione d'essere."
Tornò il silenzio mentre i due innamorati
sedevano sulla panchina, i corpi vicini,
tenendosi per mano al chiaro di luna.
Ancora una volta lei parlò. "Quanto mi ami?"
chiese. Lui rispose:"Quanto ti amo? Conta
le stelle nel cielo. Misura le acque degli
oceani con un cucchiaino. Conta i granelli
di sabbia sulla riva del mare. Impossibile,
dici? Sì, ed è altrettanto impossibile per
me dire quanto ti amo."Il mio amore per te

  • A Quiet Place by Psuedojandek
    Come back.
    Or don’t.
Decide for yourself what is right.
I turned my ear to the ground today.
    It wasn't loud.
    It wasn't loud at all.
    The sun is sparkling outside.
I see a gleam of it.
But I have to get up and go to work.
I don't know what to do.
    I just laugh.
I laugh and I laugh and you smile.
    Why do you smile?
I was waiting on fire one night.
I sat here. Waiting on fire.
I wish I could leave this room.
You are thinking of me, out there in the air.
    Reach into the air.
    One. More. So three.
I don't know what that means. One more so three.
    It’s a poor boy.
He lost his friends. He lost his father.
He lost everything he ever had.
But don’t say poor boy to me.
    Oh, poor boy.
You think you know who’s poor?
You shut the door on my closest accord.
I am not a fool no more.
    RING.
    RONG.
    BOING.
Look at your tills. Make a purse.
    It’s a European jewel, I must add.
    We don’t want it.
    We don’t want it.
It's mostly all from you, and we don't want it.
We can't talk about our experience in this house.
    Smoking cigarettes.
    Smoking cigarettes in the dark.
Skies get water for a life of all.
My brain... I can't feel any pain in it.
To give to everybody. Except you.
    My little friend.
    You’ve got a family story.
    You’re a jerk. You don't work.
You're like some angel in the sky.
    Angel in the sky-y-y.
You’re living free. I’m just living high.
    You’re a mess.
    A spirit.
    Living on white.

  • Under Western Skies by Tennessee Wayne
    [Verse 1]
I used to walk the asphalt where the semis scream and moan
Crossed over 8 Mile in a haze, a thousand miles from home
Purple syrup in a styrofoam cup, a slow-motion kind of blind
Nearly left my boots imprint on a Peterbilt's grill design.
But there ain’t no trucks out here tonight, just the stillness and the space
A long, long way from Tennessee, looking for a saving grace.
Now I'm a walking man in a sandbox, just kicking at the stone
Stumbling through the sagebrush, like a complete unknown.
    [Chorus]
And those damn coyotes are yapping, ripping up the quiet night
They give me a hissy fit under the cold, pale starry light
I ain't got no peaceful easy feeling, just a pocket full of sighs
And a bleeding pair of lacerated shins, out under Western skies.
    [Verse 2]
I’m thinking 'bout my girl back yonder, the one with the vacant stare
Smoked cigarettes by the carton, bleach blonde tangled hair
with needle tracks on both her arms, a mind cooked on the stove
But I swear to God I loved her, just like all the rest I loved.
She had a monkey on her back, a habit she couldn't break
Just staring straight through plaster, waiting for the floor to shake.
Now I'm tearing up my denim on a Cholla cactus spine
Bleeding in the gravel, trying to get her off my mind.
    [Chorus]
While those damn coyotes are yapping, ripping up the quiet night
They give me a hissy fit under the cold, pale starry light
I ain't got no peaceful easy feeling, just a pocket full of sighs
And a bleeding pair of lacerated shins, out under Western skies.
    [Bridge]
They say the desert’s safe because the traffic cannot reach
But the shadows here have talons, and the wind has got a speech.
No semi-truck can hit me, no brake lines gonna shriek
But the silence is so heavy that it makes my knees go weak.
Old Scratch is on the horizon, strumming on a cigar box box strings
Mocking every lonesome lyric that a walking man sings.
    [Verse 3]
The syrup’s finally wearing off, the desert air is cold
A million stars above me looking ancient, mean, and old.
I’m just a ghost in blue jeans, pulling thorns out of my skin
Wondering where the highway ends and the madness must begin.
There is no known out here, just the cactus and the dirt
And the memory of a wide-eyed girl who taught me how to hurt.
    [Chorus]
And those damn coyotes are yapping, ripping up the quiet night
They give me a hissy fit under the cold, pale starry light
No, I ain't got no peaceful easy feeling, just a pocket full of sighs
Just a bleeding pair of lacerated shins, out under Western skies.
    [Outro]
    Yeah, under Western skies...
    Watch your step, Wayne.
The thorns'll get ya if the memory don't.
    Just keep walking

  • Instructions for a Lonely Flower by Lori Yamamoto
    One stem is standing
    in the water mirror-bowl
    I turn it slowly—
to the left, right feels too bold
    and I am not bold.
    I leave it alone
    because touching makes it scared
    like me in new shoes.
    The flower does not complain—
it just leans a little west
    like it knows the way.
    Maybe tomorrow
I will turn it one more time
    or maybe not—
    flowers don't check their watches,
and neither should I, I think.
    So I leave it alone.
    The water is still.
    The stem is still.
    We are three shy things
    not needing to move.
