In early February of 2012, Colleen Margaret Povey was in the final days of her breast cancer battle. As her family surrounded her hospital bedside, her eyes remained fixed on the door, desperately searching for the faces of her daughter and granddaughter whom she hadn’t seen in nearly three and a half years.

As Colleen’s body became weaker, she squeezed her husband Scott’s hand and asked; ‘Is Karlie and Khandalyce here yet?’

These were Colleen Povey’s final words, and within hours she passed away at the age of just 44.

This is the heartbreaking story of 20-year-old Karlie Pearce-Stevenson, and her 2-year-old daughter Khandalyce Pearce.

Across the US, intimate homicides account for approximately 9% of all murders nationwide, and while we hear accounts mainly of the cases involving victims that are women, violence against men and mariticide can quite often be less talked about. Mariticide is the killing of one’s husband, boyfriend or male intimate partner, and although a few cases have dominated headlines over the past 15 years or so, this has been due to the antics of the killer, while the victims in these cases remain relatively unknown. Good examples of this are the cases of Jodi Arias, who shot and killed Travis Alexander on June the 4th 2008, and that of Shayna Huber who claimed self-defense after shooting and killing Ryan Poston in October of 2012.

But there is one case that I came across that I had never heard of before, and I wanted this man's story to be heard.

With modern advancements such as DNA profiling and high-tech computerized systems, the work of the Forensic Investigator has become both more complex and more straight forward. Straight forward in the sense that these days DNA can quickly incriminate or exclude someone from an investigation. But before the introduction of advanced DNA technology, forensic investigators had to rely more than ever on their own ability in locating, analyzing and interpreting the evidence that had been left at the scene of a crime and what had been taken away; which more often than not could be of very little value in obtaining that crucial link between victim and perpetrator that’s needed to secure a conviction.

But then there are the rare crime scenes that contain such an overwhelming amount of forensic evidence, that even before the use of DNA, it can result in a quick open and shut case.

This is the story of 17 year old, Florence Hildreth.
