(500) Days of Summer: reviewed!

*Richard McGonagle Voiceover voice* The boys had been enjoying doing their podcast for a couple of years by the time it got to episode 17 of Season 7 … it was a close call who would win. And as they say, it’s not a competition … but then again … *zoom in to see a bead of sweat running down Christopher’s face* … everything is!

IT’S MOVIE SEASON BABY! None of these are SPECIALS and yet … every episode is SPECIAL in its own way, wouldn’t you say? We hope you enjoy 2 old men doing the WAIT, THIS ACTOR WAS IN WHAT FILM game for most of today’s opening. We’ll save you the trouble of screaming … yes, we were talking about the actor Dominic Sessa. And no, we didn’t name him lol. And thankfully, we don’t like all the same bizarro shit … or else this wouldn’t be that fun a pod, now would it?

I would like to declare today’s episode a not-very-safe-space for spoilers. If you would like to experience this movie free of our RAMBLING TAKES clogging up your brainwaves: it is worth an initial spoiler-free watch before rejoining the chat/giving this ep a listen.

DIRTY DANCING: Reviewed! 

I can’t believe it but after another week of edging the listenership with aniticipation we’re here again for another week in the Cultural Content Consumption Appraisal Hour Universe (the CCCAHU) and we’re talking about how grateful you should all be for it! It’s like clockwork. Thursday mornings without a break EVER. “It’s Thursday and you know what that means” vibes for the indefinite future! LEGALLY BLONDE: Reviewed! 

Come one, come all! It’s time for the Cultural Content Consumption Appraisal Hour and our Legally Blonde era. We are finally about to be on fleek and slay and do all the things. And now, why do we have to go all the way back to our youths and 2001 to do these very 2020s things? Well, because …Legally Blonde is a core text. And we’re all about the core texts here on the CCCAH. It’s our all pink episode where we say goodbye to a long first half of the summer filled with sport and say hello to a long second half of the summer filled with fashion. We have a lot to learn there. Or at least one of us does. Keep your eyes peeled on the thumbnails for evidence of any growth in that area hehehe. 

We are an educational programme, really. We are here to educate you and educate ourselves. We are here to get excited by the premise for a 30 second game and then get so carried away that we forget to mention how the scores work (I feel like that tidbit of information can be quite crucial for a new listener, to be quite honest with you). We are here for sidebars that last longer than the reviews, cold open that are creeping towards a sixth of the length of a full episode and SHAPELY score-guesses and score-actuals!

BLACKBERRY: Reviewed! 

Welcome to the show of shows! It’s Thursday the 9th of July so of course we’ll be live-reacting to the Egypt vs Argentina game from Tuesday the 7th of July and discussing a bit of England vs Mexico from Sunday the 5th of July! When you really deep it, we as a podcast are all things to all people. PLAN 75 BY THE ORCHESTRA (FOR NOW): Reviewed! 

We swing back from our regularly scheduled programme to as special a special as we’ve done for a while. Why so special? Oh I don’t know. Let’s just say, this one will live long in the memory in terms of its placement on the calendar. Between the 25th of June and the 2nd of July, the podcast has been enjoying the summer. And we shall leave it at that.  

It’s Thursday and you know what that means. But there is also a very specific and intricate mathematical formula for you to know that it means it’s a special episode rather than a regular one. Because so far it’s more often than quarterly and less often than monthly, and so it almost might seem like these pop up in your feed at random! But no. Trust us. There is both a rhyme and a reason to it. And the best bit is it’s not determined by an algorithm of any kind. It’s pure, unadulterated, intuitive and organic … vibes. 

This week the podcast is reviewing the first EP by a new band called The Orchestra (For Now). Strap in music lovers because sometimes … you even get a break from the yapping and get to just listen to the music! Welcome to yet another episode of the Cultural Content Consumption Appraisal Hour and that’s right, your boys are finally world cup boys once more! It’s been a long time coming. Our podcast kind of started after one of those pesky old world cup tournaments. And then we lived through a Euros, shout out. One game even got reviewed on the podcast because of course it did. 

And now here we are. On the precipice of all the glory and/or tragedy. Which do you prefer listener? I think one doesn’t taste quite the same without the other, to be honest with you. But hey. What do I know? I’m just a guy. A guy who will never and has never used AI to write these shownotes. What the fuck do you take me for? I will bash these show notes out with a chisel until the day of our final episode. I’ll tell you when I’ll give up my battle against AI. When it’s AI England vs AI Croatia in the group stages. GUY MONTGOMERY’S GUY MONT SPELLING BEE SEASON 2 EPISODE 6: Reviewed! 

Today we are really CCCAHing it up! We’re reviewing another fun game show. And that is fun because, when you really think about it … we’re a fun game show also! I mean, the fun part is arguable, but in theory, that’s what we do here on the programme. So it’s like mirror images. Maybe the fourth season of the Spelling Bee will feature a round spelling all the things we’ve reviewed on the Triple C Appraisal Hour. That remains to be seen. But Guy Montgomery seems like such a lovely bloke so I’m going to go ahead and say it’s probably a dead cert to happen.

THE RAMEN GIRL: Reviewed! 

Roll up, roll up. To the Ramen girl initiated and the about-to-be-Ramen-girl-initiated! It’s your favourite podcast about someone who wins the review game and your favourite sport about two people who share cultural interests. 

All the “it’s Thursday you know what that means” vibes you can shake a stick at on today’s episode, on this, the 4th of the 6th month of the year. And if you too are wondering how we already in the 6th month of the year then all I can say is … you need to take a good look over your balcony at the glowing ramen house over yonder and see if it elicits any feelings in you. Either you’re hungry or you’re inspired to finally find your passion in this life! 

I can’t believe it took me 37 years and a few months to find out about this film existing at all. And a few more days than that to finally join the most exclusive of clubs: the club of people who have watched The Ramen Girl. Honestly, I’m going to find it hard to bounce back and talk about other things after this week. But I will do my best. For now. I’m so excited for you to join us, whether it’s in a preview-the-film-for-me capacity, review-the-film-for-me capacity or in a (my personal favourite) cheeky little bit of Gogglebox style watch-it-for-me capacity.
