Anywhere between 8-11 million people flock to the shores of a certain man-made lake in northern Georgia, every year. Tourism websites abound with idyllic photos of soothing sunsets, maritime amusements, and serene blue waters. On the surface, it’s portrayed as the perfect place for a vacation getaway. Below the surface, it’s a different story. The 625 billion gallons of water contained within the lake encircle a dark secret past. Sunken beneath the placid azure waters are the remains of entire towns which stood in the way of progress. Towns which had been dying slow deaths and some with histories of hate and senseless murder.
