The Cutting Room Floor

The wait is finally over, and The Last Jedi has arrived! After taking some time to view the film and digest it, Erik and Alex are finally ready to tackle the film!

Luke Skywalker's peaceful and solitary existence gets upended when he encounters Rey, a young woman who shows strong signs of the Force. Her desire to learn the ways of the Jedi forces Luke to make a decision that changes their lives forever. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren and General Hux lead the First Order in an all-out assault against Leia and the Resistance for supremacy of the galaxy.

As you might imagine, this episode ran long...in a film that did a lot to turn the Star Wars universe on its head, there was a lot of ground to cover. This episode covers our initial thoughts and what we liked about The Last Jedi, with what didn't necessarily work for us coming in Part II.

Peter Parker and Mary Jane seem to finally be on the right track in their complicated relationship, but trouble looms for the superhero and his lover. Peter's Spider-Man suit turns black and takes control of him, not only giving Peter enhanced power but also bringing out the dark side of his personality. Peter must overcome the suit's influence as two supervillains, Sandman and Venom, rise up to destroy him and all those he holds dear.

Overcrowded with too many villains, the forced inclusion of Venom, and storylines that ultimately are a disservice to those that inspired them, Spider-Man 3 is ultimately two halves that don't add up to a compelling whole. Join us as we break down the film: What did it do right? And what on Earth went wrong?

When a failed nuclear fusion experiment results in an explosion that kills his wife, Dr. Otto Octavius is transformed into Dr. Octopus, a cyborg with deadly metal tentacles. Doc Ock blames Spider-Man for the accident and seeks revenge. Meanwhile, Spidey's alter ego, Peter Parker, faces fading powers and self-doubt. Complicating matters are his best friend's hatred for Spider-Man and his true love's sudden engagement to another man.

Continuing where Spider-Man left off, we discuss our contrasting view with the majority of critics and fans who hold this sequel at the highest regard to the Raimi trilogy. While there were things that worked, there were a number of things that fell short for us — including the odd decision to make Octavius' signature metal arms hiss. This in particular leads to the longest fit of giggles recorded on the show thus far.

Spider-Man centers on student Peter Parker who, after being bitten by a genetically-altered spider, gains superhuman strength and the spider-like ability to cling to any surface. He vows to use his abilities to fight crime, coming to understand the words of his beloved Uncle Ben: "With great power comes great responsibility."

Like Peter's newfound abilities, taking on Spider-Man was a great responsibility. The Cutting Room Floor goes back to 2002 and let our Spidey-senses tingle — what did Sam Raimi and co. do right in this initial run of Spider-Man films? What went wrong? And what was up with the Green Goblin's mask?

Will Byers has been rescued, but few in the small town know the details of the events, and those that do have been sworn to secrecy by the government. When Will is found to be still influenced by entities from the Upside Down, his friends and family learn there is a larger threat to their lives, town, and this side of the universe.

In every TV show or movie, there's always a list of A-list characters. This episode is about the other guys — the B-list side characters who are there for comic relief or character motivation, and are good in small doses. Join Erik and Alex as we discuss that, like any drug, these B-listers can be dangerous in large amounts, and can lead to character overdoses.

You're sitting at home, flipping through the channels, and you see that a movie you love is on. We've all done it : you've seen the movie a hundred times — you probably even own it — but you're sucked and find yourself watching anyway. Then, you notice something, well…different. When you get to a particular line or scene, you notice something is off. You know that the line being said will be edited, but the way it's done isn't just noticeable, it's laughably bad.

In this episode, Alex and Erik discuss those laughably bad moments — choppy editing, poor audio dubs, ridiculous minced oaths, and pixelating Sense and Sensibility because of very tame amounts of cleavage. All of this and more awaits you on The Cutting Room Floor! Yippee-ki-ay, Mr. Falcon!

Erik and Alex discuss a couple of items of news relating to The Last Jedi; namely, a new TV spot, the international trailer, and the international poster. After that, it's a discussion about a classic episode of Futurama, Season 4's Three Hundred Big Boys. Inspired by the classic Simpson's episode, 22 Short Films About Springfield, Three Hundred Big Boys is constructed as a series of loosely-connected vignettes that coalesce at the climax of the episode. The looser structure allows for jokes that fly a mile-a-minute, and easily makes an argument for any Top Ten Futurama list, if not a solid argument that this episode surpasses its inspiration.

Four serial suicides and now a note! Oh, it's Christmas!

In this episode, Alex and Erik discuss the phenomenal BBC series, Sherlock. We both loved this first series — everything from the casting, scripts, acting, and cinematography is expertly crafted, and is a thrilling ride from start to finish. The only downside is that each series is only three episodes long. Kick back, relax, and join us as we enter the world of Sherlock Holmes. The game is on!
