Dr. Anthony S. Fauci announced yesterday that he will step down in December as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden. The response appears to be partisan, as many Democrats praised Dr. Fauci and many Republicans criticized him. In The Daily Article for August 23, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison considers what the divided response says about our country and why Christians should exemplify a third way that pursues God while seeking civility, decency, and unity.

The former director of the CIA recently claimed that the modern-day Republican Party is the most “dangerous” political force he has ever seen. Today’s levels of political divisiveness and hatred challenge our confidence in democracy itself. In The Daily Article for August 22, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison argues that it is urgent for Christians to be part of the solution and not part of the problem, and that we must refuse to condemn those with whom we disagree.

A pastor’s sermon in Kansas City went viral recently for all the wrong reasons: during his message, he lambasted his congregation for not buying him the luxury watch he had requested. But here’s the good news: the pastor later apologized for what he called his “inexcusable” remarks. In The Daily Article for August 19, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison considers religion as transaction and religion as relationship, asks if America is or will soon be under God’s judgment, and whether Christians in America are blessing our country to be a blessing to others.

A robot dog with a rocket-propelled grenade strapped to its back has been unveiled at a Russian arms fair. Two high school students in California have identified two new scorpion species (as though we needed any more). These stories and others illustrate our mortality. However, my purpose is not to depress us but to encourage us. Since we have only this day, we are free to focus fully on this day. When we do that, we experience the eternal significance of present faithfulness.

In light of its failed response to COVID-19, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, announced yesterday a “reset” that will focus on making the CDC quicker to respond to new health threats. The US Dept. of Justice is investigating the SBC. And Hillsong Church is being sued by a whistleblower. In The Daily Article for August 18, 2022, Dr. Jim also discusses the problem with “political religion,” our need for accountability, and how submitting to the Holy Spirit allows us to transform culture. For more on living this day fully for eternal purposes, see Dr. Denison's article, “Battle-equipped robot dog debuts at Russian arms fair.”)

It is frustrating to face enemies we thought we had already defeated. A new study reports that even a “relatively small nuclear war” would “create a worldwide food crisis lasting at least a decade in which hundreds of millions would starve.” We thought the demise of the Cold War would lower the prospects of nuclear confrontation, but this existential and cataclysmic threat clearly persists. When we face daunting challenges, it is human nature to try harder to do better. But still our crises persist. Let’s consider another approach: from David, the author of Psalm 57. As a result of her opposition to the former president, Liz Cheney was defeated last night in a landslide, losing the Republican primary to Harriet Hageman, a political newcomer who was endorsed by Trump. In The Daily Article for August 17, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison also quotes from Thomas S. Kidd’s book on Thomas Jefferson, noting that Jefferson, as well as our current society, has a “dissonance between stated belief and practiced reality.” He then shares the news of author Frederick Buechner’s death at ninety-six and quotes Buechner on proving God’s existence. For more on practical ways to trust God for his best, read “A ‘limited’ nuclear war would starve millions of people.”

A caregiver in the UK named Kayrin Callaghan knew who she wanted for her bridesmaids the moment her fiancé proposed to her. Kayrin has supported a woman with Down syndrome for two years and also helps three others. She asked the four of them to be part of her wedding. In the midst of pain and tragedy, stories of hope stand out like a ray of sunshine on a stormy day. But there’s a deeper reason we resonate with stories of grace: we were created by grace to experience grace and to give the grace we receive.

Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui, age twenty, was one of thirteen American troops killed outside of the Kabul airport on August 26, 2021, when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive. Nearly a year later, his older brother died on August 9 as a result of suicide at his little brother’s memorial. In The Daily Article for August 16, 2022, Dr. Jim Denison reports that, despite the drastic and worsening conditions in Afghanistan, the church is growing amidst persecution.
