The 2026 National Day of Prayer is today. Millions of Christians around the US will pray for our nation personally and in gatherings with other believers. To a skeptic, this must seem an unprovable assertion, a self-fulfilling prophecy akin to a horoscope. Such skeptics are right: we cannot prove to them, or even to ourselves, that time spent in prayer today or any other day is warranted, that the God to whom we pray is the God we believe him to be. However, today we discuss how our inability to prove our faith through reason invites us to focus less on what we “too much discuss” and “too much explain,” as T. S. Eliot noted, and more on the God who should be the object of our worship and service.

As Politico reported yesterday, Indiana’s Republican primaries were “the first big test for whether the president still has an iron grip over his party.” The reason: last December, despite the president’s strong urging, nearly a dozen GOP state senators refused to redraw Indiana’s congressional maps. Seven of these lawmakers were targeted yesterday as Mr. Trump’s allies spent nearly $10 million combined against them; the president also endorsed a candidate running for an open Senate seat. Not in living memory has a single politician so unified both parties as Donald Trump has. However, I think there’s more at work here, a factor that applies to every Christian, whatever our political beliefs. Today, we discuss faith and the falsification principle.

Last Friday, a federal appeals court blocked the mailing of mifepristone prescriptions, restricting access to one of the most common means of abortion in the US. On Monday, Justice Samuel Alito temporarily restored broad access to the drug, suspending the lower court’s ruling for one week so the full Supreme Court can consider emergency appeals and decide how to proceed. In our highly secularized, post-Christian culture, it seems like it’s one step forward, two steps back. But there’s an antidote to the discouragement many of us feel.

The FBI and prosecutors have released new footage of the man charged with attempting to assassinate President Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. If you’re like me, however, this news is not how you prefer to begin your week. I’m with you. I have chosen in recent days not to focus on the latest assassination attempt, beyond the event itself, for two reasons. One is that the story makes me feel helpless. The other is that avoiding it makes me feel empowered. Now I see that both sentiments, while understandable, are fallacious.

NASA chief Jared Isaacman was on Capitol Hill recently for a meeting with the US Senate Committee on Appropriations and answered questions about Pluto. Earlier this year, he told the Daily Mail, “I 100% support President Trump making Pluto great again.” Today, we take a look at the debate, what led to the decision to make the change, and why restoring Pluto’s status continues to be a pet project for so many. Why do so many people still care about this? The answer is relevant to far more than our discussion of Pluto’s planetary designation.

The New York Times has named Taylor Swift one of America’s “greatest living songwriters.” American Idol recently had each of its singers perform from her songbook. What is the secret to her abiding popularity? According to Time, her ability to connect with the frustrations and sadness so many people feel makes them “feel seen.” If the latest research is to be believed, the audience for such empathy is only growing these days, as reports show lowest records in the US for self-reported happiness, worker satisfaction, and consumer sentiment. These downward trends are largely attributed to COVID-19, but I would argue our culture has walked away with the wrong lessons about life and mortality from the pandemic in a crucial, fundamental way.

King Charles III addressed a joint session of Congress this week, speaking of the Christian faith as “a firm anchor and daily inspiration” that guides both individuals and communities, a reminder that our “democratic, legal, and social traditions” are rooted in something deeper than politics. As our Founders understood, the true power of the nation lies not in government but in the “indispensable supports” of “religion and morality.” The problem comes when we settle for an evangelicalism that is content to know our souls are saved but busy inside the “bastions” of our counter-cultural social monasticism.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived yesterday in Washington, DC, where the king will address both houses of Congress today. The first visit of a reigning monarch to the US was similarly pragmatic, hoping positive coverage of the 1939 royal tour would win support for an Anglo-American alliance against Nazi Germany. Now commentators are watching to see if King Charles and President Trump can repair the relationship between the two nations damaged by differences over the war with Iran. While Americans do not serve an earthly king, we can use the visit of a foreign ruler to reflect on the need for a king of our hearts today.

Shortly after the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner began Saturday evening, a thirty-one-year-old man armed with two guns ran past a Secret Service security checkpoint, intending to kill President Trump. Between 1875 and 2004, fifty-nine primary national leaders were assassinated, averaging approximately one every other year. And none of the rest of us are immune from that mortality. Something in us doesn’t want to admit that we could be next. None of us has any plausible hope that we will be the first humans to escape death forever. But dying somehow doesn’t feel as real as all that.

Which worldview best explains reality, and which one does so while requiring the fewest unsupported assumptions? Jay Atkins asks an AI engine to evaluate all the major world religions for the highest plausibility. The New Testament consistently states that salvation comes only by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the only person in history to die and rise from the grave, never to die again. If only Jesus has died to pay for our sins and risen from the grave, only Jesus can forgive our sins and grant us salvation.
