A pickup truck flying an Islamic State flag plowed into a large crowd in New Orleans’s French Quarter early yesterday morning, killing at least fifteen people and injuring more than thirty in what authorities are calling a terrorist assault. If we blame God when humans misuse their God-given freedom, should we not credit him when we use such freedom for good? Today we discuss what the psalmist meant when he penned, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). In a troubling world, we need this truth every day.

As we welcome in 2025 and a new year, we look to bizarre good luck traditions around the world, from dropping apples to wearing polka dots to hanging onions on your door. In an effort to feel more in control of life, we find comfort in the fact that Jesus’ manhood was just as human as you and I. We look today at how Jesus modeled full faith in God for bringing not good luck but God’s will to his ministry. The same is available to you and to me.

This year opened with conflict escalating all across the world, especially in the Middle East. As we look forward to peace in the new year, we’ll look to the One who grants everlasting peace and how the Lord has provided for those who cry out for his help. King Hezekiah responded to the invasion in three ways that we can learn from in our own lives today.

Former President Jimmy Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of one hundred. He had been in and out of the hospital several times recently before deciding to spend his remaining time at home. And so Carter’s life ended much as it began: surrounded by family and friends in a small, unassuming Georgia town. What he accomplished in between, however, was truly historic.

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Geoffrey Hinton, often called the “godfather of artificial intelligence,” is warning that AI could wipe out the human race within the next decade. He said the technology is developing “much faster” than he expected and could make humans the equivalents of “three-year-olds” and AI “the grown-ups.” In his view, “We’ve never had to deal with things more intelligent than ourselves before.” Is that so? In today’s article, we discuss the forces in our universe unknown and misunderstood by humanity—and the God who created it all.

Last Saturday, the actor Denzel Washington received his minister’s license and was baptized. In a video he said, “It took a while, but I’m finally here . . . If [God] can do this for me, there’s nothing he can’t do for you.” Washington is right in ways we cannot begin to imagine. Today, we explore what we know of Christ’s loving, holy, unchanging nature and how it hints at all the unknown ways in which he intercedes for us every day.

Many churches held “Christmas Adam” services on December 23, hoping to attract attendees with pre-holiday services. This was just one of several holidays our pluralistic culture is celebrating. In today’s article, we discuss how walking by faith, in hope, will one day be proven beyond all doubt and become clear to all that Christ is Lord.

Millions of children eagerly awaited Santa Claus’s visit last night. If you used NORAD’s Santa tracker, you knew precisely where he was on his annual expedition. On any other night, the North American Aerospace Defense Command scans the skies for potential threats. But on Christmas Eve, at least one hundred thousand kids call into NORAD to inquire about Santa’s location, while millions more follow St. Nick’s progress via online reports in nine languages. The story points to the abiding relevance and transformational power of God’s incarnational love revealed at Christmas.

What does the popularity of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” say about our culture? Her lyrics, whimsical as they are, do express something timeless: “Santa Claus won’t make me happy with a toy on Christmas Day,” because “all I want for Christmas is you.” We are created to want more than the “toys” this world can offer, because we were created for the eternal world to come. That’s why possessions must not possess us, since nothing we can make can fill the “God-shaped emptiness” with which God made us.
