Donald Trump wrote on his social medial platform TruthSocial yesterday that it was “God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening,” allowing him to survive Saturday’s assassination attempt. The Wall Street Journal editorial board similarly wrote, “It’s nothing short of miraculous that Mr. Trump avoided death by a literal inch.” According to the New York Times, the picture of the bloodied former president, his fist raised, flanked by an American flag, is “already the indelible image of our era of political crisis and conflict.” If political rhetoric was in fact a motivating factor for the shooter, the tragedy further demonstrates the power of hateful speech to incite hateful actions.
Donald Trump was speaking at a campaign rally this afternoon in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a series of pops that sounded like gunshots rang out. Mr. Trump’s face and ear were bloodied as he was rushed off the stage by Secret Service agents and escorted into his motorcade. The shooting is being investigated as an attempted assassination of the former president.
The Republican Party recently released its 2024 platform, outlining its goals and priorities should the November elections go its way. While the document comprises a list of twenty promises and ten chapters that go in depth on a variety of subjects, the changes to the party’s official stance on abortion have received the most attention. Many have sought to reframe the GOP’s stance on this issue to appeal to a wider range of voters. However, doing so risks losing the pro-life part of a base they’ve come to rely upon in the process. What is the criteria for being considered pro-life? How can believers navigate this issue without compromising their biblical convictions?
Amidst all the bad news in the news this week, let’s focus today on some good news. A new study of gratitude and mortality among older adults found that those who more frequently noticed and felt grateful for positive experiences tended to live longer. As you will hear, this report is by no means an outlier. And, Scripture similarly commands us to “give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) and to give thanks “always and for everything to God the Father” (Ephesians 5:20).
Why? How? And how does this discussion relate to the massive cultural issues we face today?

The thirty-two member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are observing its seventy-fifty anniversary this week in Washington, DC. Support for Ukraine will be an especially high priority escalated by Russia’s missile attack Monday that hit a children’s hospital and killed at least forty-one civilians.
Many are focusing on President Biden’s cognitive capacities at the NATO summit as it continues today in Washington, DC. A perceptive article in the Atlantic identifies the foundational issue in this controversy.

Hurricane Beryl, the earliest Category 4 and Category 5 hurricane on record killed at least three people and knocked out power to nearly three million homes and businesses in Texas after devastating islands in the Caribbean.
President Biden wrote a letter yesterday to his “fellow Democrats” stating, “I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump.” He told his favorite cable news program, “The bottom line here is, we’re not going anywhere. I’m not going anywhere.” And he addressed his largest donors in a Zoom conference yesterday afternoon, declaring that he is “absolutely and unequivocally” staying in the race. Whatever you think of Mr. Biden’s cognitive and governing capacities, it remains true that “Father Time is undefeated.” Hurricane Beryl reminds us that Mother Nature is equally powerful.

A growing chorus is calling on President Biden to end his candidacy, and some even say he should resign from office. In normal times, I would probably be writing on Hurricane Beryl after it made landfall this morning in Matagorda, Texas; the storm is expected to cause significant flooding in the Houston area and beyond. Or I would focus on the surprising results in France’s parliamentary election, where leftists won the most seats, though no party won a majority. Or the vote in Iran that elected their first reformist president in two decades. Or the elections that empowered a center-left government in the UK.
But these are not normal times,

ABC News has shifted President Biden’s interview tonight with George Stephanopoulos to primetime. According to the New York Times, he has told key allies that he knows he has only days to salvage his presidential candidacy. At the end of a week spent exploring the greatness of our nation, we see that our best and most patriotic service to our nation is for us to be a people capable of the liberty we celebrate.

This Fourth of July marks the 248th anniversary of the day America’s Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress. Today, we look at statements from Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan about the uniqueness of our nation. “Liberty to all,” as Mr. Lincoln so perceptively observed, was the beating heart of the American experiment. “The concept that man was born free,” as Mr. Reagan noted, still empowers our republic.

President Biden will meet with Democratic governors later today as he attempts to solidify support among his party’s top leaders after last week’s debate. This as Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas has become the first Democrat in Congress to publicly call for Mr. Biden to step down as his party’s nominee for president. While you and I can do very little to change our leaders or resolve the political turmoil of these days, we can contribute directly to our national “soul.”
