Federal Reserve officials raised interest rates yesterday to their highest level in twenty-two years, causing many to ask if a recession is coming. More pressing questions might be: Is a spiritual recession coming? Is it already here? If so, what can we do to respond? Consider this biblical guide to the change we need to be in order to see the change we wish to see.

Elon Musk has changed Twitter’s name to X, possibly erasing billions in value. And parents are hiring $4,000 sorority consultants to help their daughters dress and impress during rush. Such shifting perceptions can become self-fulfilling prophecies, and this fact is especially relevant to the future of America.

Yesterday, Israel’s parliament ratified the first bill of a judicial overhaul sought by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, setting off demonstrations and protests across the country. The bill takes away the Israeli Supreme Court’s ability to nullify government decisions it finds “unreasonable in the extreme.”

Supporters say this power was nebulous and enabled liberal judges to overturn the will of the electorate. Critics say the overhaul would reduce judicial oversight over the cabinet and give the government greater powers without necessary accountability.

A political scientist at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem calls the conflict “a clash between the Israelis and the Jews,” with the Israelis representing the founders who envisioned a secular Zionist state and the Jews representing those who want to rebuild the Jewish kingdom that reigned over the land two thousand years ago.

“It’s a clash between a more civil identity and a more religious identity,” he adds.

Should this sound familiar to Americans?

The inclusion of scenes with explicit sex and nudity in “Oppenheimer” ought to make it off-limits to Christians who choose to follow biblical teachings on lust. However, avoiding the film, while vital for followers of Christ, is only one step in a broken culture that surrounds us daily with pervasive immorality. How are we to “put to death whatever is earthly” (Col. 3:5) in us?

As the war in Ukraine drags on, its true cost can be seen in the faces of the thousands of children who have survived or have lost a parent. As governments fight to not join the fight, what can we do as individual Christians to effect positive change? The biblical example of Jonathan provides an answer.

One winning ticket was sold in downtown Los Angeles for last night’s $1.08 billion Powerball jackpot, but winning the lottery often comes with unfortunate and disastrous results. Additionally, Americans may be collectively wealthier today, but we’re also unhappier and more anxious. In today’s Daily Article, Dr. Jim Denison turns our eyes to counterintuitive good news when it comes to the urgency of our personal spiritual renewal for the betterment of America’s future.

An article on the increase in births in Texas due to its enacted abortion ban in September 2021 refers to “pregnant individuals” and “birthing people” rather than using the word “women.” In other news, a lifestyle influencer is charging her followers $1/hour to chat with her AI clone. In this “increasingly bizarre present,” how should Christians pursue spiritual growth?

Diet drink sales plummeted after the WHO declared that the artificial sweetener aspartame possibly causes cancer. In other medical news, the FDA approved the first over-the-counter birth control pill, Opill. In both instances, there’s more to the headline, and the implications of these issues go deeper even than the crucial issues they raise. As Christians, our need for discernment is especially urgent in these times.

In “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One,” Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) fights the “Entity,” which is essentially AI on steroids. The movie parallels the real world in a way that is urgently relevant for every Christian.

When Sound of Freedom first came out, I was hesitant to see it. As a father, there are few things more difficult to watch and contemplate than the horrific abuse and unconscionable evil portrayed in the film. But the movie’s message is important, and it conveys that message in a way that calls us to choose hope over fear. So, given that message, why has the film generated so much controversy? And what does it say about our culture that many have judged the movie without seeing it?
