Some idiot in the Prime Minister's Office thought it would be a good idea to try to play nice with Grace Tame. They had no choice, of course, but she was never to give a man she hates the benefit of the doubt - and she didn't. She threw it all back in his face with interest - and kept the story going another day.

The only interruption to that debacle were stories about how the religious discrimination bill failed. The bill annoys the left for its perceived slight against gay and trans children, and it annoys the right for not protecting what they see as religious freedoms. So he's annoyed everyone. It takes real talent to achieve that in politics. Whatever it is, it's not a win. It also raisdes the question: why would you vote for the Liberals?

Grace Tame and Brittany Higgins spoke at the National Press Club yesterday. It could not have been worse for the PM.

Ms Higgins' charge was that he didn't do anything useful or meaningful to help women - playing into the narrative that the PM has power but doesn't use it (a common complaint of conservatives).

Ms Tame alleged she was threatened by someone in a "government-funded organisation". The PM has denied it was done on his behalf - but that plays into the trust question. Who do you trust? The Liar from the Shire or Saint Grace?

Yep, not a good day. The PM can't afford to lose many more.

The left has the commanding heights of the culture: the media, social media, the yartz, the activists. So while the right may win the elections, they don't do much when they're there and don't govern as they campaign - and those that try, get cut off at the knees.

Stuart Robert is a useless minister. But he did one thing right: last year he rejected six garbage research applications for Australian Research Council grants. Academics had a whinge. They always do when you get between them and taxpayers' money. Yesterday, Brian Schmidt, the Nobel-prize-winning Vice-Chancellor of the ANU had a whinge about it as well. Good. It means we can revisit these grants and the waste at our universities.
