A group of elderly members of the Khulumani Support Group and the Galela Campaign have been sleeping outside the doors of the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg. They are demanding reparations for human rights violations suffered under the apartheid state. Until now, 22 000 applications have been verified as victims of apartheid eligible for reparations by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. To date, only 17 400 victims were actually paid.
They received R30 000 per victim as a once-off payment instead. The victims were meant to have received R126 000 over six months, as the TRC had previously recommended. Over and above this, victims were promised non-cash benefits like educational and medical benefits, which many did not receive. The organisations are considering legal action should the matter remaining unresolved.
