The repeal of Roe vs Wade case by the Supreme Court has led to protests across the United States over the weekend. A group of 80 prosecutors across America have pledged to not prosecute who seek abortion services outside of their home state. It is estimated that 26 out of 50 states will seek to outlaw abortion and leave women's bodily integrity at the hands of politicians. This would leave poor women without a safe avenue to seek abortion services. Global health institutions have condemned the ruling, stating that abortion is an essential part of healthcare and some experts are predicting that more countries around world may review their abortion laws. Whilst we know SA has protected a woman's right to abortion under Section 27 of the Constitution, we have seen the ACDP table legislation against the right to abortion back in 2007 and more recently in 2017. Today, we discuss the possible implications this case may have on society: legally, social stigma surrounding abortion and as it relates to sexual reproductive health development programmes.
