November 19, 2020Zimbabwe journalist Chin’ono’s health at risk in jailReports coming out of Zimbabwe say that journalist Hopewell Chin’ono is at risk of contracting bronchitis and hepatitis following an outbreak at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison. He has apparently been moved to a cell with 45 other inmates. The cell only has capacity for 16. Kekana made the opening remarks as the SABC appeared before Parliament's Communications Committee. The SABC Board, Executives and the Ministry appeared before the committee last night. ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule has vowed to lobby the Alliance Political Council to stop the impending retrenchments at the SABC. The Council comprises ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa, SACP General Secretary Dr Blade Nzimande and the top brass of the labour federation Cosatu including Bheki Ntshalintshali and Zingiswa Losi. The SABC is intending to retrench at least 400 permanent staff employees before the end of this year. November 18, 2020SABC staff call on management to step down over retrenchmentsGroup Executive for News at the SABC Phathiswa Magopeni says she will no longer be issuing retrenchment letters. This follows an urgent meeting late yesterday afternoon with newsroom employees where they expressed frustration and anger as 400 of the corporation’s employees stand to lose their jobs. The public broadcaster was planning to issue more letters to its workers by today as it seeks to reduce its staff compliment in order to save costs. Some workers have been staging lunch time pickets this week to highlight their opposition to the move.
