    South Africa ranks sixth globally as a nation of drinkers; this ranking is according to the 2018 global status report on alcohol and health published by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Meanwhile, Dr Grieve Chelwa, a Senior Lecturer in economics at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town says given its societal harm, taxation of alcohol products must be urgently revisited.

  • Mantashe asks police to intervene in Sibanye-Stillwater's crisis in the Westrand
    We start off the show by looking at the growing unrest at Sibanye-Stillwater's gold operations, in the Westrand, which has seen nine people dead since workers downed tools in November last year. The crisis has prompted Mineral Resources Minister, Gwede Mantashe to call for the assistance of the Police Minister, Bheki Cele to "restore and safeguard the safety and security of the community" in Carletonville in the west of Johannesburg.

    The SABC will today launch a multi-platform production called Democracy Gauge to mark 25 years of South Africa's democracy. South Africans go to the polls in crunch general elections on May the eighth. The public broadcaster's Democracy Gauge will profile the experiences of ordinary South Africans.
