The next six months will determine the relevance of the Democratic Alliance for the future beyond the next election. Every time the DA calls for the ANC to be brought under the 50% mark, it probably terrifies more of the party's traditional supporters than advances the party in new constituencies, according to former party leader and executive chairman of Resolve Communications, Tony Leon.

The Copyright Amendment Bill was introduced to Parliament in May 2017 to amend the Copyright Act of 1978 and its earlier amendments. On Friday the Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry has adopted reports on the Copyright Amendment Bill and the Performers Protection Amendment Bill which seek to establish and protect the rights of creators and copyright owner.

Former Cape Town mayor and DA member Patricia de Lille announced the launch of a new political party over the weekend. This after her resignation from the party. Parliament's joint constitutional review committee yesterday adopted a report which recommends that section 25 of the Constitution be amended to explicitly allow for land to be expropriated without compensation. Meanwhile, Black First Land First (BLF) leader, Andile Mngxitama, says there will be no amendment of the constitution. He says President Cyril Ramaphosa and EFF Leader Julius Malema "lied to the landless".

There is an on-going debate over the role of online activities in the radicalisation process. However, much of this debate has focused on Western countries; less is known about patterns of online radicalisation in Africa and about the extent to which African national governmental strategies focus on addressing this issue.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) commissioned RAND Europe to explore social media use and online radicalization in Africa as part of its 'Regional Project on Preventing and Responding to Violent Extremism in Africa'.
RAND Europe's study examined the links between social media use and online radicalization in seven African countries: Cameroon, Chad, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda. With a focus on ISIL, al-Shabaab and Boko Haram - three of the most lethal Islamist militant groups worldwide - the analysis also looked at governmental efforts to address this problem and outlines recommendations for policy and programming.
