Mkhuseli Jack was born on a white-owned farm in the Eastern Cape. Evicted from their home, his family was split up. Young Khusta had a yearning to learn and he never gave up. Eventually, reaching high school in PE, his drive finds a new focus: freedom. Jack became a respected leader in the movement and is a successful businessman today. He shares insights about his new book with us.

Prof Moenieba Isaacs a researcher with the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies found that the complex drivers of fisheries crime in this community underscore the importance of a law enforcement approach geared at identifying and prosecuting the organised criminals benefiting from these illegal activities. According to her ‘Fishing communities are becoming increasingly poor and more vulnerable. This started the day fishing communities had to apply for abalone and crayfish rights.’ She says this system inadvertently proved to have a negative effect on their livelihood.

Even though the majority of South Africans now reside in urban centres, millions of South Africans still live in rural areas. Many live in poverty with limited access to resources and services such as transport, telecommunications, electricity and water.
