  • Marikana activists march 80km to Union Buildings
    One hundred activists recently undertook a trek from Marikana, in the North West province, to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, demanding compensation for the widows of the 34 mineworkers who were killed when police opened fire on striking miners in 2012 in the mining town. A group of protesters, demanding the reinstatement of outsourced municipal workers who lost their jobs in 2010 and 2011, met the Marikana marchers. The two groups decided to consolidate their marches in solidarity with each other's causes.

    State-owned enterprises (SOEs) have become one of the biggest risks and threat to South Africa's economy, with losses and bailouts running into billions each year. Over the last decade SOEs like Eskom, Prasa, SAA, and the SABC have been marred by poor leadership, corruption and mismanagement to the point where ratings agencies like Standard & Poor's cited SOEs as a major reason for the downgrade of the country's credit rating.     Cabinet has approved the decision by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies, to designate the Atlantis Special Economic Zone in Atlantis Industrial Area, outside Cape Town in the Western Cape Province. The designation of the Atlantis SEZ follows that of the Saldanha Bay Industrial Development Zone and is intended to promote industrial development along the West Coast Corridor.
