Professor Rinie Schenck SARCHI chair Waste & Society at UWC has done research on waste pickers in SA and how we can move towards a responsible waste society. The aim of the study was to investigate the food in security, nutritional status and socio- economic status of the waste pickers on nine landfill sites in South Africa. Amongst others, the study looks at Environmental risks, dietary intake of the waste pickers and social risks experienced by waste pickers.
