The charter is part of an affirmative action drive that aims to reverse decades of black exclusion from the mainstream economy. Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe says the release of the mining charter is a consensus of all stakeholders. The revised charter proposes that existing mining rights holder keep their BEE status in the event their black partners exit from the deal.

Lesotho's opposition parties have pulled out of the SADC recommended reform process. They are demanding that the government set aside the suspension of the Chief Justice. Former South African deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke, appointed by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to represent him in Lesotho. Ramaphosa is the SADC facilitator in Lesotho.
The reforms are intended to amend the constitution and other laws towards stability, following years of political and security upheavals.

On Tuesday this week when addressing the United Nations General Assembly, President Cyril Ramaphosa called for the reform of the United Nations, particularly its Security Council. He went on to say that South Africa would like to see the Security Council increased to 15 members and for Africa to have two permanent members on the council since most conflicts happen on the African continent.
