While in the same province also, the Eastern Cape Department of Education has placed four provisional teachers and an administrator at St Matthews High School in Keiskammahoek to take over from suspended teachers implicated in a sex-for-marks scandal. From government, to religious organisations, schools, we put in power, and they abuse that power.

October across the world has been termed global ‘Pride’ month by the LGBTIQ+ community. It’s a month were the LGBTIQ+ community seeks to celebrate, empower and educate people about the LGBTIQ+ community. The Thami Dish Foundation is currently hosting a three-day Global Network session, which started yesterday the 10th until the 12th of October at Constitution Hill Johannesburg South Africa. Last week on The Talking Point we had a discussion with the founder of Jabu Stone Natural Hair about The mental toll of entrepreneurship. The interview was motivated by businessman SkinnySbu’s tweet where he said “HONESTLY I feel like giving up now - I've used all I have, sold my car to save the business…Things are not as fancy. The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation – an organisation that invests in the development of potential entrepreneurs in Southern Africa –commissioned the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) and Mindcette an entrepreneurial consultancy to establish the true “DNA of a successful entrepreneur”. The mindsets study titled Toward a Comprehensive Measure of Entrepreneurial Mindset, surveyed 3 661 South Africans using quantitative research, posing questions which required answers directly relating to the key mindsets of an entrepreneur. Pope Francis yesterday compared having an abortion to hiring a "contract killer". In an address to worshippers in the Vatican, Francis said "Interrupting a pregnancy is like eliminating someone.” This morning we get two different takes in reaction to this. The ACDP strongly opposes the public provision of abortion facilities. They consider the current legislation to be a license for promiscuity with abortion being viewed as a ready birth control method. Last year SECTION27 and the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) have made a joint submission opposing the draft amendments to the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act 92 of 1996 (TOP Act) as proposed by the African Christian Democratic Party. The current unemployment rate in SA sits at 27.2 percent in the second quarter of 2018 from 26.7 percent in the previous period. Today is the second day on the Jobs Summit. The Summit hopes to bring together government, business, labour, and community organisations to advance job creation.
Research was conducted on what influences employees’ decisions to stay in jobs.

Our guest says she found from her research that while pay and profit are not irrelevant in employees’ decisions about work, overemphasizing monetary factors hid important motivators. Relationships were often a more significant factor than wages for decisions to accept, keep, or quit jobs.

For several decades, collective bargaining arrangements between trade unions and employers have operated on the majoritarian system. This simply means that where a trade union had more than 50% membership within a company or workplace, it had exclusive organizational rights such as access to company premises to meet with members, represent members, stop-order facilities for members’ subscriptions deductions as well as collective bargaining. This was codified in the Labour Relations Act of 1995 that favoured majority unions. However, in a recent case where a new minority union, SACOSWU, secured organizational rights within the Department of Correctional Services, the majority union, POPCRU objected and the case went all the way to the Constitutional Court which decided in favour of the minority union.

In today’s show we learn more about the case, the rationale for the Concourt’s decision and its implications for collective bargaining in South Africa.
