#FeesMustFall leader and activist, Mcebo Dlamini, is calling for amnesty to be granted to students who participated in the Fees Must Fall protests between 2015 and 2017. The Fees Must Fall was a student movement that started in 2015‚ to campaign for free higher education. Many students were criminally charged, others suspended and some expelled from university for damage caused to the institutions. Mcebo Dlamini says if their demands for amnesty are not met, they will organize and take it to the streets.

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has strongly criticized South African Police Services for failure to provide security for the whistleblowers in the murder of former ANC youth league secretary-general and PR councillor at uMzimkhulu Municipality, Sindiso Magaqa. Thabiso Zulu, an ANC member, anti-corruption activist and friend of Magaqa, and Les Stuta, an official at Harry Gwala Municipality, were responsible for blowing the lid on the alleged reasons behind the assassination of Magaqa which resulted in them receiving death threats. After approaching the police for assistance and being pushed from pillar to post, Zulu eventually approached the public protector.

According to the Statistics South Africa 2016-17 Victims of Crime report a total of 250 out of every 100 000 women were victims of sexual offence. The 2016/17 SA Police Service statistics revealed that 80% of reported sexual offences were rape. Recently, South Africa was shook by the suicide of Khensani Maseko, a Rhodes University student who was allegedly raped by her boyfriend in May.
Woman recently shared their experiences on social media, of what they do daily to avoid being raped, including dressing up in less sexy ways, running instead of walking, being extra conscious and alert of their surroundings to be ready in case of an attack. Is this the trauma women have as a result of the shocking rape statistics in the country? How does it affect one’s daily life?

The Minister of Finance, Nhlanhla Nene, released the report by the Independent Panel on the evaluation of the current list of items that are zero-rated for public comment by August 31. The Independent Panel was appointed by Nene after the increase in tax announcement by the in 2018 budget. VAT was increased from 14 percent to 15 percent that took effect from April 1. The independent panel has recommended that Nappies‚ sanitary products and school uniforms should be zero-rated for Value Added Tax (VAT).
