Over the years when discussing occupational health and safety, we normally focus on overt physical effects of work on workers such as accidents that cause death or injury or other factors such as hazardous chemicals or repetitive work strain. It seems that a neglected side of occupational health is workplace stress that often has more far reaching and long term negative consequences for individual workers, workplaces, the economy and society. In today’s show we take a close look at workplace stress – its causes and consequences. We are sure many listeners will relate to this whether you’re an ordinary worker or even at the top of the corporate ladder.

Gun owners whose licenses have expired will have to surrender their firearms to the police immediately, those who failed to do so will be arrested. In June this year, the Constitutional Court ruled that gun licenses should be renewed periodically. During our Open Line yesterday, several of our callers who are firearm owners called in to express their confusion around the renewal and process of the taking in of firearms with expired licenses. Some expressed their frustration with the police's apparent inability of dealing with firearms handed in to them. So we have decided to invite the South African Gunowners' Association, to get some clarity on the matter and how the process works...

President Cyril Ramaphosa has launched government's plans to improve the provision of sanitation infrastructure in mostly rural areas at a ceremony in Pretoria. This follows the public outcry over failure by the department of Basic Education to eradicate pit latrines in the country's poorest schools. The President is joined by senior officials from the United Nations Children's Fund, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and other civil society organisations to pledge support to the initiative which seeks to improve the dignity of learners.

Last week The National Heritage Council of South Africa together with the Zindzi Mandela Foundation co-hosted the launch of the Afrikan Calendar .The Afrikan Calendar emanates from research work done by the Zindzi Mandela Foundation with heritage practitioners and historians who reached a conclusion on a date that is supposed to be celebrated as the “Afrikan New Year’s Day”, the 23rd of September. This month is also celebrated as the National Heritage month and the 24th day marks the National Heritage Day for the people of South Africa.

Minister of Women in the Presidency, Ms Bathabile Dlamini will deliver a keynote address at a seminar on Landless women of South Africa: expropriation of land without compensation. The seminar which takes place on today, is organised by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) as an attempt to add the voices of women in the current debate of landlessness and expropriation of land without compensation. The outcome of these discussions will form part of a submission to the National Assembly Portfolio Committee on Constitutional Review dealing with the land issue.

The ANC has been accused of being indecisive and inconsistent when dealing with its members who are alleged to be involved in corrupt activities, especially those deployed in government. Lately the concept of UNITY appears to be an instrument that has kept even those who have failed dismally in government unshaken.
