The Vumelana Advisory Fund is a non-profit organization that helps beneficiaries of the land reform programme to develop their land in an effective and sustainable way. To date Vumelana has facilitated 15 partnerships that have the potential to mobilize an investment of R580 million, putting approximately 70 000 hectares of land to productive use, and benefitting more than 13 500 beneficiary households. According to Peter Setau, the Chief Executive of the Vumelana Advisory Fund, an attempt to use expropriation without compensation as a sole blunt instrument to solve all problems associated with land reform is bound to fail. Last week the Trump administration rolled out the newest edition of a report, required by law, on the state of religious freedom around the world. In his article in the daily Maverick, Brooks Spector writes “Some beyond the conference’s organizers may also argue that freedom of speech and expression is at least as important as the right to worship in one’s choice of ways. Alternatively, there is also the argument that freedoms and human rights simply aren’t divisible and rankable as primary, second-most-important, third-most-important rights, and so forth. According to that view, focusing on religious freedom – and ignoring simultaneous, sustained pressure for free speech or freedom of assembly – might sound like a rather hollow gourd”

The debate on whether black people can be racist or not has emerged once again. This after an enraged Pretoria woman hurled Insults at white police officers, who attended a scene that appeared to have been an altercation between her and a white woman. In the video, that has since gone viral on social media, the enraged woman calls the other woman an "uneducated c**t" and a "piece of white sh*t and retarded white b***h". She also directs her anger at some of the police officers by calling them uneducated "pieces of sh*t". The video and other incidents have sparked an outcry throughout the country, including the sentencing of former Real Estate Agent, Vicky Momberg. Some are angered that this altercation is being referred to as racist, despite racial epithets being hurled...

Retired Anglican Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane has challenged his church to fully accept gay, lesbians and to bless same sex marriages. Ndungane was delivering the main sermon at the funeral of the 74 year old former Dean of St George's Cathedral Rowan Smith, - a self-confessed gay priest. On the other hand, Archbishop Desmond Tutu told congregants that sexual orientation was not a choice but a gift. Addressing hundreds of mourners and dedicating his sermon to the LGBTI group in honour of Smith, Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane says the issue of blessing same sex unions in the Anglican Church remains unresolved.

NGOs, more than ever, need to be beacons of hope in their communities; they have to reflect and reinforce the dream of an innovative and inclusive society, even as they are dealing with everyday challenges. This is why NGOs should assert their role as innovators, which would allow a more nuanced position (of interdependence) rather than simply "for" or "against". But can NGOs do that, considering they depend on funding? Sometimes from government?
