The Auditor-General, Kimi Makwetu's report has revealed that irregular expenditure in the country's municipalities has increased from 16-point-two-billion-rand to 28-point-three-billion-rand, up by 75 per cent. He released the shocking figures in Parliament. Makwetu says the Eastern Cape is topping the list of defaulting provinces with 13-point-five-billion-rand, followed by the North West and Gauteng. He also says the Free State, Limpopo and North West municipalities have not received a single clean audit. Makwetu says, however, that municipalities made an effort to be transparent about irregular expenditure.
