The late ANC veteran and Contralesa Chief, Mhlabunzima Maphumulo has been awarded with the Order of Luthuli in Gold for his exceptional contribution to conflict resolution and resistance against injustice and oppression. Mhlabunzima Maphumulo who was chief of the Maphumulo at Table Mountain, was assassinated, during the height of political violence in the midlands in 1991. He was dubbed the "peace chief", for his resistance against state-sponsored violence during apartheid. For more on the man, we are now joined in studio, here at the Maslow Conference Centre by Jill Kelly, an Assistant Professor of African and South African History at Southern Methodist University. Professor Kelly helped nominate Chief Maphumulo for the "Order of Luthuli award" and Chief Maphumulo was also the subject of her research paper...

Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete, says an external service provider, Pamoja PTY LTD, to conduct an impact study into the proposal to move Parliament to Pretoria. The proposed move has been on the cards for a number of years. Mbete was delivering Parliament's budget in the National Assembly. Parents, not politicians, must run South Africa’s schools’ is the title of the first edition of Free FACTS from the Institute of Race Relations (IRR), a report that exposes the extent to which the State-run school system is stunting the development of South Africa’s children, especially black pupils. Citing IRR research showing that ‘when communities control schools, results improve’, the report makes the case for a constructive alternative, suggesting that ‘a short cut to much better education is to get bureaucrats out and let parents take over’.

The Auditor-General, Kimi Makwetu's report has revealed that irregular expenditure in the country's municipalities has increased from 16-point-two-billion-rand to 28-point-three-billion-rand, up by 75 per cent. He released the shocking figures in Parliament. Makwetu says the Eastern Cape is topping the list of defaulting provinces with 13-point-five-billion-rand, followed by the North West and Gauteng. He also says the Free State, Limpopo and North West municipalities have not received a single clean audit. Makwetu says, however, that municipalities made an effort to be transparent about irregular expenditure.
