Statistics South Africa says almost ten million people had formal sector jobs in the first quarter of this year. Last week, Stats SA released its jobs data at a media function in Johannesburg. Stats SA says formal sector jobs increased by 54-thousand in the first quarter. On our Youth Employment feature this morning, we look at why 3 million youth, between the ages of 15 and 24 are without jobs and how do we bring in - and keep - 3 million young people into the economy? The South African Post Office has announced the transfer of over 1 million social grants beneficiaries from the outgoing CPS Sassa card to the new Sassa card issued by Postbank. This figure did not include those beneficiaries that have willingly opted to take-up Postbank Mzansi accounts as their preferred payment method.

For over a decade, community healthcare workers (CHW’s) have become an indispensable part of the state’s healthcare provision in South Africa. There are over 70000 care workers in South Africa, mainly women, who serve the most desperate and poor members of our communities who need added support due to their illness or disability.

On the 1st of July 2018, the University of Cape Town welcomed new vice-chancellor Professor Phakeng who took over from Dr Max Price. Affectionately known as the Fab Academic, joined UCT in 2016, taking over from Professor Danie Visser as the deputy vice-chancellor of research and internationalisation in January 2017. American rapper 50 Cent has landed himself in hot water on social media after mocking Terry Crews' sexual assault testimony. 50 Cent mocked Terry for essentially, letting himself be groped by another man without his consent at a party. Terry, popularly known for his role of Chris' father on Everybody Hates Chris, recently revealed that he was a victim of sexual assault two years ago and decided to share his story before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

More than 1,000 people have drowned in the Mediterranean this year sailing from Libya to Europe, with a rush in the past few days to beat an anticipated crackdown by the European Union, whilst in the US Over 2,000 children remain separated from their parents despite Donald Trump overturning the policy that split up families of people arrested at the Mexican American border. Thousands protest took place across US over Trump immigration policies.
