  • plastic pollution in south africa
Every year, an estimated 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean. With global production of plastic increasing exponentially, the amount of plastic finding its way into the ocean is likely to get much bigger. Bits of plastic that gets thrown into the ocean or swept downstream out to sea, either sinks or is picked up by currents. Much of it is eventually carried into one of five massive ocean regions and If the current trends continue, there will be more plastic in the world's oceans than fish by 2050, this according to UN secretary general, António Guterres. For more on this we are now joined in studio by KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board Maritime Centre of Excellence Board Chairman, Mr. Sipho Mkhize. The Board has launched a campaign to address the devastating effects of plastic pollution in the oceans.

  • why more women are falling off the glass cliff
While the same barriers persist for women in the workplace, 2018 may be the year social awareness and legislation catalyzes a big shift. So says Sarah Babb from the University of Stellenbosch. She explains the glass cliff and says - Often, when a disaster or dramatic company restructuring occurs, a woman or person representative of a minority group is very publicly promoted to a senior leadership position. Think of Nhlamu Dlomu, appointed CEO KPMG South Africa in September 2017, following the company’s Gupta scandal. Frequently, the new position is tenuous – it can seem to set the leader up for failure, with unfair expectations for the role. And if the leader does fail, all too often the existing notion of gender bias is reinforced.
