Parents, not politicians, must run South Africa’s schools’ is the title of the first edition of Free FACTS from the Institute of Race Relations (IRR), a report that exposes the extent to which the State-run school system is stunting the development of South Africa’s children, especially black pupils. Citing IRR research showing that ‘when communities control schools, results improve’, the report makes the case for a constructive alternative, suggesting that ‘a short cut to much better education is to get bureaucrats out and let parents take over’.

The Auditor-General, Kimi Makwetu's report has revealed that irregular expenditure in the country's municipalities has increased from 16-point-two-billion-rand to 28-point-three-billion-rand, up by 75 per cent. He released the shocking figures in Parliament. Makwetu says the Eastern Cape is topping the list of defaulting provinces with 13-point-five-billion-rand, followed by the North West and Gauteng. He also says the Free State, Limpopo and North West municipalities have not received a single clean audit. Makwetu says, however, that municipalities made an effort to be transparent about irregular expenditure. Time now for our Youth Employment feature. As per usual on a Wednesday, we discuss all things pertaining to you the youth. Now, Statistics South Africa say there is a growing concern over the number of young people without jobs in the country. According to StatsSA's Quarterly Labour Force Survey for 2018, the country's unemployment rate has remained unchanged at 26.7%, since the end of 2017. While the stats reveal a stable unemployment rate, more than one in every three young people in the labour force did not have a job and that youth unemployment problems were notable, irrespective of education level. Public transport is an essential service but over the years it seems that instead of improved public transport, it has actually deteriorated. This is despite several government initiatives to improve public transport. Workers and members of the public regularly complain about late and overcrowded trains, overloaded and dangerous taxis, taxi violence, problems of their personal security and crime, public transport being far from their homes and workplaces, the high cost of transport etc. At times this frustration by commuting workers even results in arson attacks on trains.

Following the land summit, the ANC says it will redistribute land under existing laws rather than by changing the constitution following a ruling party summit. The EFF has insisted that the constitution must be changed to ensure radical redistribution of land and other parts of the economy from the white minority to the black majority. Why is it important to change the constitution to effectively redistribute the land?

Some have said that this move by the ANC to expropriate Land is part of their electioneering campaign. We get the EFF’s thoughts on this.
