Translated from the Afrikaans meaning 'apartness', apartheid was the ideology supported by the National Party (NP) government and was introduced in South Africa in 1948.Even though apartheid came to end in 1994, the scars left by apartheid still exist who experienced the cruelty of the apartheid system. This morning we aim to understand, how apartheid has affected and continues to affect the lives of some people, 24 years into democracy.

The Anti-Racism Network South Africa (ARNSA) will this evening host a lecture on the Roots of Racism by Professor Achille Mbembe, author of the award winning book, 'Critique of Black Reason'. The lecture forms part of ARNSA's Anti-Racism Week programme which runs from March 14-21 annually. ARNSA is a network of some 80 organisations and is spearheaded by the Ahmed Kathrada and Nelson Mandela Foundations.

Last week Taxify app-based driver Siyabonga Ngcobo’s charred body was found in the boot of a burnt car close to the Unisa Sunnyside Campus on Thursday night. His colleagues believe it’s a murder that was carried out by rival metered taxi drivers. The ongoing rivalry between Johannesburg meter taxi drivers and Uber operators has been going on since 2016. This morning we ask both parties involved, what needs to happen for it to come to an end?

He is arguing that in South Africa there is neither democracy nor justice when it comes to narrating critical historical events and moments. He goes on to say that the re-construction and re-writing of histories about the Sharpeville Massacre which occurred on March 21, 1960, and the re-constitution of that day as ahistorical and a depoliticised ‘Human Rights Day’, is but one of many examples of this unfortunate political bias and narrow approach to the telling of history.
