Dr Dirk Van Zyl, president of the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists shares his thoughts on the potential risks pertaining global fee arrangements. Due to the importance of this issue, the Health Professions Council of South Africa has urged healthcare professionals to defer entering into global fee or similar financial- and clinical arrangements or contracts. They argue that their concerns relate to the protection of patient rights and limitations on professional autonomy, to be able to act in the best interest of patients.

This morning we talk to Roche Mamabolo who is an entrepreneur and author of a book entitled 'The start-up revolution: Fit in or stand out.' He points out how people are conditioned to go according to the status quo where one is told to do things a particular way. One of the comments he makes in the book is that "No one is going to pick you, pick yourself up. Keeping it safe is no longer safe." Where would he say entrepreneurship is going wrong in our country?

Last week President Jacob Zuma encouraged stakeholders in the agricultural sector to make a maximum contribution to economic growth and job creation. Zuma was speaking at the Westonaria Agri-Park which is aimed at revitalising and transforming the agricultural and rural economies. One of the empowerment companies that came forward is the Musa Group who say that they aim to transform the agriculture sector by providing financial support and empower disadvantaged black entrepreneurs with the skills to fully participate in the mainstream economy. What is their strategy for this sector?

An interesting observation is being made about how we are all consciously and unconscious bias based on our perspective perception. The perceptions are said to be made by our background, experiences and other external factors and we all habour them and take them into the workplace. What is it that makes us do that?

Professor David Bilchitz explains what socio-economic rights are, how they are guaranteed in a constitutional democracy and what needs to be done to ensure effective protection and translation of these rights into material entitlements. His book Poverty and Fundamental Rights has been translated into Spanish. The book addresses the pressing issue of developing a rights-based approach to addressing severe poverty and inequality, and asks why is it that violations of socio-economic rights are treated with less urgency than violations of civil and political rights, such as the right to freedom of speech or to vote?

We look at the state of parole system in South Africa. On the 10th of April, the department of justice and correctional services revealed that they would like to see some changes to the current parole system. Speaking at the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria‚ Acting Minister of Justice and Correctional Services‚ Faith Muthambi described the current system‚ implemented in 1998‚ as “outdated and in need of revision”.
