אַאַמוּ"ר אָמַר

My revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], once stated:

חֲסִידוּת אִיז נָעוּץ תְּחִלָּתָן בְּסוֹפָן וְסוֹפָן בִּתְחִלָּתָן

“[To] Chassidus [can be applied the statement], ‘The beginning is rooted in the end and the end in the beginning.’

דִי דַּרְגָא פוּן עִגּוּלִים מִבְּלִי אֲשֶׁר יִמָּצֵא רֹאשׁ וְסוֹף

This is the level of Divine influence called iggulim, in which beginning and end are indistinguishable. 

אָבּעֶר אַחַר כָּל זֶה אִיז דעֶר עִקָּר אִיז סֵדֶר.

Nevertheless, this having been said, the main thing is seder — ‘structure.’

דעֶר בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב אִיז געֶוועֶן אַ מְסוּדָּר

“The Baal Shem Tov was an organized person; 

דעֶר מעֶזרִיטשׁעֶר האָט מְדַקְדֵּק געֶוועֶן אוֹיף סֵדֶר

the Maggid of Mezritch was particular about orderliness;

אוּן דעֶר עֶלטעֶר זֵיידעֶ — רַבֵּנוּ הַזָּקֵן — האָט געֶלעֶרעֶנט חֲסִידִים זֵיי זאָלעֶן זַיין מְסוּדָּרִים

and my great-great-grandfather, the Alter Rebbe, taught his chassidim to be orderly. 

דאָס זעֶהט מעֶן אִין זַיינעֶ מַאֲמָרִים, בְּרִיף, נִגּוּנִים

We see this in his maamarim, letters, and niggunim. 

דִי חֲסִידִים וואָס האָבּעֶן געֶהאַט אַ זְמַן קָבוּעַ אוֹיף קוּמעֶן אִין לִיאָזנאָ — דעֶרנאָך אִין לִיאַדִי

The chassidim who had a fixed time to visit Liozna — or later, Liadi

האָבּעֶן נִיט געֶהאַט קֵיין רְשׁוּת בַּייטעֶן דעֶם זְמַן אָן אַ רִשָּׁיוֹן פוּן רֶבִּי'ן

were not allowed to change it without permission from the Alter Rebbe.

אוֹיף בּאַקוּמעֶן אַ רִשָּׁיוֹן האָט מעֶן געֶדאַרפט זאָגעֶן אַ טעַם

To receive such license, one had to provide a reason.

בּאַם רֶבִּי'ן אִיז געֶוועֶן אַ וַעַד מְיוּחָד אוֹיף פִיהרעֶן סֵדֶר הַחֲסִידִים

“The Alter Rebbe established a special committee, to maintain order among the chassidim.

וּבְרֹאשׁוֹ מַהַרִי"ל אֲחִי רַבֵּנוּ

headed by his brother, R. Yehudah Leib, 

אוּן אַ בּאַזוּנדעֶר וַעַד אוֹיף אָנפִירעֶן מִיט חֲסִידִישׁעֶ יוּנגעֶלַייט

And he had a separate committee, to guide the younger married men of the community,

וּבְרֹאשׁוֹ אַדְמוּ"ר הָאֶמְצָעִי

headed by the Mitteler Rebbe."

הַמִּצְוֹת נִמְשָׁכוֹת עַל יְדֵי הַמַּקִּיף שֶׁבַּמִּצְוֹת עַצְמָם

[The spiritual influence evoked by] the mitzvos is drawn down by means of the transcendent light generated by the mitzvos themselves.

מִצְוַת צְדָקָה, עַל דֶּרֶךְ מָשָׁל, הִיא מִצְוָה כּוֹלֶלֶת

For example, the mitzvah of tzedakah is a comprehensive mitzvah, 

אֲשֶׁר כָּל הַמִּצְוֹת נִקְרָאוֹת בְּשֵׁם צְדָקָה

as is evidenced by the fact that all the mitzvos are called “tzedakah.” 

וּמֵהַאי טַעְמָא נָכוֹן בִּמְאֹד לָתֵת קוֹדֶם כָּל מִצְוָה פְּרוּטָה לִצְדָקָה

For this reason, it is most appropriate to contribute a coin for charity before performing any mitzvah, 

שֶׁהוּא הַמְשָׁכַת הַמַּקִּיף בַּפְּנִימִי

for it draws the transcendent light (makkif) into the light that can be internalized (pnimi). 

וּמִכָּל מָקוֹם הַוֵי מַקִּיף הַקָּרוֹב

Still, this transcendent light is “close,”

מַה שֶׁאֵין כֵּן תּוֹרָה שֶׁהִיא מַקִּיף הָרָחוֹק

whereas the Torah is a “distant” transcendent light,

וּפְעוּלָתוֹ נַעֲלָה יוֹתֵר

whose effects are more elevated.

רַבֵּנוּ הַזָּקֵן שָׁאַל אֶת אֶחָד הַחֲסִידִים הַגְּדוֹלִים הַמְקוֹרָבִים בְּיוֹתֵר בִּהְיוֹתוֹ אֶצְלוֹ בִּיחִידוּת, לְמַצָּבוֹ

Once, in the course of a yechidus, the Alter Rebbe questioned one of his foremost and closest chassidim about his personal situation. 

וַיִּתְאוֹנֵן הֶחָסִיד כִּי יָרַד מִנְּכָסָיו וכו

The chassid lamented that he had lost all his possessions.

וַיַּעֲנֵהוּ רַבֵּנוּ

The Alter Rebbe answered him:

דִיךְ דאַרף מעֶן — אַז דוּ זאָלְסְט מאַכעֶן לִיכְטִיג דַיין סְבִיבָה מִיט תּוֹרָה וַעֲבוֹדָה שֶׁבַּלֵב

“You are needed — to illuminate your surroundings by studying Torah and by serving G‑d with your heart [in prayer]. 

פַּרְנָסָה אוּן וואָס דוּ דאַרְפְסט — דאָס דאַרף דעֶר אוֹיבּעֶרשְׁטעֶר בָּרוּךְ הוּא דִיר געֶבּעֶן

As for your livelihood and the things that you need — this G‑d must give you.

טוּ וואָס דוּ דאַרְפְסט, וועֶט הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרֵךְ טאָן וואָס עֶר דאַרף

Do what you must and G‑d will do what He must.”

חָסִיד אֶחָד אוֹ תַּלְמִיד אֶחָד

A single chassid or student,

כַּאֲשֶׁר נוֹתֵן לִבּוֹ דַּעְתּוֹ וְנַפְשׁוֹ עַל הַתּוֹרָה וְחִזּוּקָהּ

who devotes his entire heart, mind and soul to study Torah and bolster its observance,

פּוֹעֵל יְשׁוּעוֹת בְּעִיר גְּדוֹלָה בְּכָל עִנְיָנֵי הָעִיר

can bring succor to a large city, with all its concerns.

וְהוּא בְּדֶרֶךְ מִלְמַעְלָה מִדֶּרֶךְ הַטֶּבַע בִּזְכוּת אֲבוֹת הָעוֹלָם

[His endeavors succeed] in a manner that transcends the limitations of nature, in the merit of the fathers of the world [i.e., our Rebbeim].

אַאַזְמוּ"ר אָמַר

My revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash], once said:

אַ אִידִישׁעֶר קרעֶכץ וואָס קוּמט חַס וְשָׁלוֹם בְּסִבָּה פוּן אַ נִיט גוּט גַּשְׁמִי

“Even when the sigh of a Jew is occasioned by an unfavorable material circumstance (Heaven forbid),

אִיז אוֹיך אַ תְּשׁוּבָה גְדוֹלָה

this too is a significant act of teshuvah. 

בִּפְרַט אַ קְרעֶכץ בְּסִבָּה פוּן אַ נִיט גוּט רוּחָנִי

All the more so, a sigh due to an unfavorable spiritual situation

אִיז אַוַדאַי אוּן אַוַדאַי אַ תְּשׁוּבָה מַעַלַיְתָא

is most certainly a lofty level of teshuvah.

דעֶר קְרעֶכץ שְׁלעֶפּט אַרוֹיס פוּן עוֹמֶק רַע

It drags one out of the depths of evil,

אוּן שְׁטעֶלט אַנִידעֶר אִין אַ מַעֲמָד טוֹב

and sets him up in a good place.”

רַבֵּנוּ הַזָּקֵן כּוֹתֵב בְּסִדּוּרוֹ

The Alter Rebbe writes in his Siddur 

נָכוֹן לוֹמַר קוֹדֶם הַתְּפִלָּה הֲרֵינִי מְקַבֵּל עָלַי מִצְוַת עֲשֵׂה שֶׁל וְאָהַבְתָּ לְרֵעֲךָ כָּמוֹךָ

that it is appropriate to say before [the morning] prayers: “I hereby undertake to fulfill the commandment, ‘Love your fellowman as yourself.’ “

זֹאת אוֹמֶרֶת

This implies

אֲשֶׁר מִצְוַת אַהֲבַת יִשְׂרָאֵל הִיא שַׁעַר הַכְּנִיסָה

that fulfilling the mitzvah of ahavas Yisrael is the gateway

אֲשֶׁר דֶּרֶךְ בּוֹ יָכוֹל הָאָדָם לָבוֹא לַעֲמוֹד לִפְנֵי ה' אֱלֹקֵנוּ לְהִתְפַּלֵּל

through which a person is enabled to enter and stand before G‑d in prayer,

בִּזְכוּתָהּ תְּקוּבָּל תְּפִלַּת הַמִּתְפַּלֵּל

and in the merit of [this mitzvah] one’s prayers are accepted.

מְסִירוּת נֶפֶשׁ הָרְאוּיָה לִבְנֵי תּוֹרָה

The [extent of the] self-sacrifice appropriate for Torah scholars 

הוּא כִּדְרָשַׁת רַזַ"ל

is indicated by our Sages’ interpretation of the phrase, 

אָדָם כִּי יָמוּת בְּאֹהֶל

“If a man dies in a tent.”

לְהָמִית אֶת כָּל הַתַּעֲנוּגִים בְּעִנְיָנֵי עוֹלָם

The Sages taught that [if one seeks to dedicate himself to the tents of Torah,] he must kill [i.e., eradicate] the desire for all worldly pleasures.

כִּי אֲפִילוּ דְּבָרִים קַלֵּי הָעֶרֶךְ בְּתַעֲנוּגֵי עוֹלָם

For even insignificant worldly pleasures

מוֹנְעִים הֵמָּה מִלִּהְיוֹת מָסוּר וְנָתוּן בְּאָהֳלָהּ שֶׁל תּוֹרָה

prevent one from being utterly devoted to the tents of Torah study.

הַעֲבָרַת הַפַּרְשָׁה שְׁנַיִם מִקְרָא וְאֶחָד תַּרְגּוּם - פָּסוּק פָּסוּק

The review of the weekly Torah reading — twice in the original, in the Holy Tongue, and once in its Aramaic translation — should be done verse by verse. 

וְקוֹרִין גַּם הַהַפְטָרָה

The haftarah should also be read [after this review].

אוֹ שְׁתֵּי הַהַפְטָרוֹת אִם הוּא שַׁבָּת ראֹשׁ חֹדֶשׁ

If there are two haftaros — such as on Shabbos Rosh Chodesh,

אוֹ פַּרְשִׁיּוֹת מְחוּבָּרוֹת וְכַיּוֹצֵא בָזֶה

or when two parshiyos are combined, or the like — both should be read.

מַעֲנֵה רַבֵּנוּ הַזָּקֵן

An answer that the Alter Rebbe gave

לְאַבְרֵךְ עִלּוּי מְצוּיָּן וּבַעַל כִּשָּׁרוֹן מְפוּרְסָם

to a brilliant young man who was well known for his outstanding natural gifts,

כְּשֶׁנִּכְנַס לִיחִידוּת שֶׁלּוֹ הָרִאשׁוֹנָה — בִּשְׁנַת תּקנ"ה בְּלִיאָזְנאָ

during the latter’s first yechidus in 5555 (1795) in Liozna:

רוּחָנִיּוּת וְגַשְׁמִיּוּת זַיינעֶן הֲפָכִים בְּעֶצֶם מַהוּתָם

“Spirituality and physicality are intrinsically opposites.

דאָס וואָס עֶס אִיז אַ מַעֲלָה אִין גַּשְׁמִיּוּת, אִיז אַ חִסָּרוֹן אִין רוּחָנִיּוּת

A material virtue is a spiritual disadvantage.

אִין גַּשְׁמִיּוּת אִיז אַ שָׂמֵחַ בְּחֶלְקוֹ דעֶר גרעֶסטעֶר בַּעַל מַעֲלָה

“Materially, one who is ‘satisfied with his lot’ is the loftiest of men,

אוּן דוּרךְ עֲבוֹדָה וועֶט אַזאַ אֵיינעֶר צוּקוּמעֶן צוּ דִי העֶכסטֶע מַדְרֵגוֹת

and his Divine service will lead him to the highest rungs.

אִין רוּחָנִיּוּת אָבּעֶר אִיז אַ שָׂמֵחַ בְּחֶלְקוֹ דעֶר גרעֶסטעֶר חִסָּרוֹן

Spiritually, by contrast, being ‘satisfied with one’s lot’ is the greatest failing.

אוּן עֶר וועֶרט, רַחֲמָנָא לִיצְלָן, אַ יוֹרֵד וְנוֹפֵל

It causes one to decline and fall [spiritually], Heaven forbid.”

מַעֲלַת הַמָּשִׁיחַ שֶׁיִּהְיֶה עָנָיו

The distinctive quality of Mashiach will be his humility.

דַּהֲגַם שֶׁיִּהְיֶה בְּתַכְלִית הַגַּדְלוּת

Though he will be on the highest level,

וְיִלְמוֹד תּוֹרָה עִם הָאָבוֹת וּמֹשֶׁה רַבֵּנוּ עָלָיו הַשָּׁלוֹם

and will teach Torah to the Patriarchs and Moshe Rabbeinu,

בְּכָל זֶה יִהְיֶה בְּתַכְלִית הָעֲנָוָה וְהַבִּטּוּל

he will nevertheless possess ultimate humility and self-effacement,

לִלְמוֹד גַּם עִם אֲנָשִׁים פְּשׁוּטִים

and will teach even simple folk.

עֲבוֹדַת הָאָדָם עַל פִּי תּוֹרַת הַחֲסִידוּת

According to the teachings of Chassidus, Divine service entails

לְהַרְגִּיל אֶת עַצְמוֹ לִרְאוֹת עִנְיַן הַשְׁגָּחָה פְּרָטִית

training oneself to perceive G‑d’s hashgachah peratis — 

אֵיךְ כִּי בְטוּבוֹ יִתְבָּרֵךְ מְחַדֵּשׁ אֶת הָעוֹלָם וְהַנִּבְרָאִים בְּכָל רֶגַע בְּהַשְׁגָּחָתוֹ הַפְּרָטִית

how, in His goodness, He continually renews the world and all its created beings with His particular providence,

אֲשֶׁר זֶה אַךְ זֶה הוּא מְצִיאוּת הַנִּבְרָאִים חַיּוּתָם וְקִיּוּמָם

and how this alone constitutes the continued life and existence of all created beings.
