  • Hayom Yom 13 Elul - The first Yechidus

    הֶחָסִיד ר' העֶנְדִיל סִיפֵּר

    R. Hendel related:

    יָדוּעַ הָיָה לְכָל הַחֲסִידִים

“It was well known among chassidim

    אֲשֶׁר בִּיחִידוּת הָרִאשׁוֹנָה הָיְתָה הַעֲבָרַת הָעָרְלָה

that their first yechidus removed the foreskin [of the heart].

    וואָס נִיט וואָס, פוּן עָרְלַת הַלֵּב אִיז מעֶן גְּלַייךְ פָּטוּר געֶוואָרעֶן

Whatever else might happen, one was immediately rid of the heart’s foreskin.”

  • Hayom Yom 12 Elul - The longest Chassidic treatise Hemshech Ayin Beis

    "הֶמְשֵׁךְ הַגָּדוֹל הַיָּדוּעַ בְּשֵׁם "בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁהִקְדִּימוּ, תֶּעֱרַ"ב

[The Rebbe Rashab] began delivering the long series of maamarim entitled BeShaah SheHikdimu 5672 [1912]

    הִתְחִיל אַאַמוּ"ר לְאָמְרוֹ יוֹם א' דְּחַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת תּער"ב בּליוּבּאַוִויטשׁ

on the first day of Shavuos of that year in Lubavitch,

    וְסִיְּימוֹ שַׁבָּת פָּרָשַׁת וַיֵּרָא תרע"ו בְּרוֹסְטוֹב

and completed its delivery on Shabbos Parshas Vayeira, 5676 (1916), in Rostov,

    בַּמַּאֲמָר הַמַּתְחִיל וה' אָמָר הַמְכַסֶּה אֲנִי מֵאַבְרָהָם

with the maamar entitled VaHavayah Amar HaMechaseh Ani MeiAvraham.

    וּבוֹ קמ"ד מַאֲמָרִים

    It comprises 144 maamarim.

    וְיֵשׁ בַּכְּתוּבִים חֵלֶק שֵׁנִי שֶׁלֹּא אֲמָרוֹ, וְלֹא נֶחֱלַק לְמַאֲמָרִים

The manuscripts [of the Rebbe Rashab] include a second part which was never delivered orally and which is not divided into individual discourses.

  • Hayom Yom 11 Elul - Torah study in this world vs the world to come

    שַׁבָּת פָּרָשַׁת תֵּצֵא תּר"ג בְּשׁוּלְחַן קִדּוּשׁ הַיּוֹם הוֹאִיל הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק לֵאמֹר

On Shabbos Parshas [Ki] Seitzei, 5603 (1843), at the daytime Shabbos meal, the Tzemach Tzedek said:

    עוֹלָם הַזֶּה הוּא עַלְמָא דְּשִׁיקְרָא

“This World is a world of falsehood.

    לָכֵן הִנֵּה גַם בְּהַטּוֹב מְעוֹרָב פְּסוֹלֶת

Therefore, even the good is mixed with dross

    וְצָרִיךְ בֵּרוּר בְּדֶרֶךְ מִלְּמַטָּה לְמַעְלָה וּבְדֶרֶךְ מִלְמַעְלָה לְמַטָּה

and requires refinement — working upwards from below and working downwards from above.

    הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא הוּא עַלְמָא דִקְשׁוֹט

[By contrast,] the World to Come is the World of Truth.

    הִנֵּה גַם הַדְּבָרִים בְּדִבְרֵי תּוֹרָה הַמְדַבְּרִים בְּעִנְיָנִים הַנִּרְאִים לְחִסָּרוֹן

Thus, even when the Torah discusses issues that appear to be shortcomings,

    הֲרֵי כְּמוֹ שֶׁלּוֹמְדִים אוֹתָם בְּגַן עֵדֶן הֵם מַעֲלָה

when studied in Gan Eden they are [understood as] positive qualities.”

    וְהִתְחִיל לְנַגֵּן, וְהֶרְאָה בְּיָדוֹ הַקְּדוֹשָׁה לְאוֹת כִּי יְנַגְּנוּ אִתּוֹ

He began to sing a niggun and motioned that those around him should join him.

    בְּנֵי הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק הִתְחִילוּ לְנַגֵּן וְאַחֲרֵיהֶם עָנוּ כָּל הַחֲסִידִים בְּקוֹל שִׁיר שֶׁהִלְהִיב הַלְּבָבוֹת

His sons began, and then all the chassidim joined in the heart-stirring melody.

    כְּשֶׁגָּמַר לְנַגֵּן אָמַר הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק

When it came to an end, the Tzemach Tzedek said [by way of example]:

    בְּעַלְמָא דֵין אִיז דעֶר טַייטְשׁ פוּן דעֶם מַאֲמָר (סַנְהֶדְרִין צט. ב)

“There is a Talmudic phrase, (Sanhedrin 99b).

    הַלּוֹמֵד תּוֹרָה לִפְרָקִים אַז עֶר לעֶרעֶנט תּוֹרָה צַייטעֶנוַוייז

‘One who studies Torah lifrakim’  In our material world, this phrase means ‘one who studies Torah from time to time.’

    אִין גַן עֵדֶן טַייטְשְׁט מעֶן דעֶם מַאֲמָר

In Gan Eden, it is understood as referring to

    אַז עֶר לעֶרעֶנט תּוֹרָה אוּן דִי תּוֹרָה נעֶהמְט אִיהם פאַנאַדעֶר

one who studies the Torah and the Torah takes him apart.

    דִי דִּבְרֵי תוֹרָה דעֶרנעֶמעֶן אִיהְם

The words of the Torah permeate his very being.”

  • Hayom Yom 10 Elul - Three meanings of Yechidus

    גְּדוֹלֵי זִקְנֵי חֲסִידֵי רַבֵּנוּ הַזָּקֵן הָיוּ אוֹמְרִים

The vintage chassidim of the Alter Rebbe would offer [three] interpretations of the word yechidus:

    אֲשֶׁר “יְחִידוּת" פֵּרוּשׁוֹ: קְלאָר, אָפְּגעֶשְׁטעֶלט, פאַראֵיינְצִיגְט

    (a) clarifying; (b) designating [one’s principles]; and (c) bonding [with the Rebbe].

    מְקוֹר ג' פֵּרוּשִׁים אֵלוּ הוּא בְּדִבְרֵי רַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה

The sources for these three interpretations are found in three statements of the Sages —

    שְׁקָלִים פֶּרֶק ו' מִשְׁנָה ב', יְבָמוֹת ס"ב. א, בְּרֵאשִׁית רַבָּה פֶּרֶק כ

in Shekalim 6:2, Yevamos 62a, and Bereishis Rabbah 20[:7], respectively.

    זֹאת אוֹמֶרֶת כִּי עִנְיַן הַיְחִידוּת הוּא לְבָרֵר אֶת מַצָּבוֹ

Implied is that yechidus clarifies one’s [spiritual] situation,

    וְלִקְבּוֹעַ אוֹפֶן עֲבוֹדָתוֹ בְּסוּר מֵרָע

designates the pattern of one’s Divine service in turning away from evil

    וּלְקָרֵב אֶת הַמִּדּוֹת הַטּוֹבוֹת

    and fostering positive character traits,

    וּלְהִתְקַשֵּׁר בְּהִתְאַחֲדוּת גְּמוּרָה וְלִמְסוֹר עַצְמוֹ

and bonds [a chassid to his Rebbe] in perfect union,

    אִיבּעֶרגעֶבעֶן זִיך מִיט אַלעֶ רְצוֹנוֹת

enabling him to devote himself and all his personal desires to the Rebbe.

  • Hayom Yom 9 Elul - When it really matters you will figure it out

    אַאַזְמוּ"ר אָמַר

My grandfather, [the Rebbe Maharash, discussed

    בְּיַחַס לְהִתְבּוֹנְנוּת בְּהַעֲמָקַת הַדַּעַת בְּעִנְיַן קְשֵׁה הַהֲשָׂגָה

the expectation that a chassid devote time to] profound meditation on a difficult concept, saying:

    אִם הָעִנְיָן נוֹגֵעַ אֲזַי מְבִינִים וּמַשִּׂיגִים בְּכִי טוֹב

“If the matter at hand genuinely affects a person, then he will understand and grasp it very well.

    וּרְאָיָה מִן הַתּוֹרָה בְּדִינֵי נָשִׁים וכו' וְטַעֲנוֹתֵיהֶן שֶׁיְּכוֹלוֹת לִטְעוֹן

“Proof of this can be found in the Torah, in the laws concerning women and the legal arguments that they could put forth

    וּמְדַבְּרִים בָּזֶה תַּנָּאִים וְאָמוֹרָאִים וְהַגְּאוֹנִים שֶׁכּוּלָּם הֵם בַּעֲלֵי הַשְׂכָּלָה מוּפְלָגָה

arguments that are debated by the Tannaim, the Amoraim, and the Geonim, who were all prodigious intellectuals!

    וְהַתּוֹרָה הִיא תּוֹרַת אֱמֶת

Now, the Torah is a Torah of truth,

    וַהֲלֹא הָאִשָּׁה אֵינָהּ בְּעֶרֶךְ לִטְעוֹן טְעָנוֹת אֵלּוּ

yet women [at large] are not capable of advancing such [intricate] arguments.

    אֲבָל הָאֱמֶת הוּא, דְּכַאֲשֶׁר הָעִנְיָן נוֹגֵעַ הִנֵּה גַּם חֲלוּשֵׁי הַדַּעַת מַמְצִיאִים שִׂכְלִיִּים עֲמוּקִים

But the truth is that when a matter genuinely affects a person, even a limited mind can propose deep arguments.”

  • Hayom Yom 8 Elul - 32000 hours studying the Alter Rebbe's Maamarim

    הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק מָנָה שְׁלֹשָׁה דְּבָרִים

    שֶׁבִּזְכוּתָם הִצְלִיחַ בִּשְׁנַת תר"ג בְּפֶטֶרְבּוּרְג בַּאֲסִיפַת הָרַבָּנִים

in whose merit he was successful at the Rabbinical Conference in Petersburg in 5603 (1843).

    וְאֶחָד מֵהֶם הוּא זְכוּת שְׁלֹשִׁים וּשְׁתַּיִם אֶלֶף הַשָּׁעוֹת

One of them was the 32,000 hours

    אֲשֶׁר טָרַח וְיָגַע בִּדְרוּשֵׁי רַבֵּנוּ הַזָּקֵן בְּמֶשֶׁךְ שְׁלֹשִׁים הַשָּׁנִים תקס"ד-תקצ"ד

that he toiled in [studying] the discourses of the Alter Rebbe over a period of thirty years, from 5564 to 5594 (1804-1834).

    בִּשְׁנַת תקס"ד קָבַע לוֹ שִׁעוּר מְיוּחָד לִלְמוֹד דְּרוּשֵׁי רַבֵּנוּ הַזָּקֵן)

In 5564 (1804) he established a fixed session for the study of those maamarim,

    (בִּשְׁנַת תקצ"ד הִתְחִילוּ לְהִתְעַסֵּק בְּהַדְפָּסָתָם

and in 5594 (1834), work began on their publication.

  • Hayom Yom 7 Elul - Spelling דכא (Daka) with an Alef

    אַדְמוּ"ר הַזָּקֵן הוֹרָה לִכְתּוֹב פְּצוּעַ דַכָּא בְּאָלֶף לִבְסוֹף וְלֹא בְּהֵא

The Alter Rebbe directed that the word דכא in the phrase פצוע דכא be written with an alef at the end, not with a hei.

    בִּפְראַג יֵשׁ סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה שֶׁקַּבָּלָה בְּיָדָם שֶׁהִגִי-הַּ עֶזְרָא הַסּוֹפֵר

In Prague, there is a Torah scroll which according to local tradition was checked by Ezra the Scribe.

    אֵין קוֹרִין בּוֹ אֶלָּא בְּשִׂמְחַת תּוֹרָה וְגוֹלְלִין אוֹתוֹ תָּמִיד בְּפָרָשַׁת שְׁמַע

They read from it only on Simchas Torah and always roll it closed at the passage beginning Shema [Yisrael].

    כְּשֶׁהָיִיתִי בִּפְראַג בִּשְׁנַת תרס"ח רְאִיתִיו וְכָתוּב בּוֹ דַכָּא בְּאָלֶף

When I was in Prague in 5668 (1908) I saw this scroll, and דכא was spelled there with an alef.

    כֵּן כְּשֶׁהָיִיתִי בְּואָרְמס בִּשְׁנַת תרס"ז

Similarly, when I was in Worms in 5667 (1907),

    רָאִיתִי שָׁם סֵפֶר תּוֹרָה אֲשֶׁר מְקוּבָּל בְּיָדָם שֶׁכְּתָבוֹ מוֹרֵנוּ הָרַב ר' מֵאִיר מֵרוֹטֶנְבוּרְג

I saw a Torah scroll which according to the tradition of that community was written by Maharam of Rothenburg.

    וְגַם בּוֹ כָּתוּב דַכָּא בְּאָלֶף

There, too, the word דכא is written with an alef.

    וְעַיֵּין בִּשְׁאֵרִית יְהוּדָא (יוֹרֶה דֵעָה סִימָן ט"ז) וְדִבְרֵי נְחֶמְיָה (יוֹרֶה דֵעָה סִימָן כ"ב). וּבְסֵפֶר מִשְׁנַת אַבְרָהָם (סִימָן ל"ב) מְצַיֵּן כַּמָּה סְפָרִים הַדָּנִים בָּזֶה

  • Hayom Yom 6 Elul - The Baal Shem Tov loved and cherished light.

    הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק סִפֵּר

    The Tzemach Tzedek related

    דעֶר בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב האָט זֵייעֶר האָלט געֶהאַט לִיכְטִיקַייט

that the Baal Shem Tov cherished light exceedingly.

    וְאָמַר: אוֹר בְּגִימַטְרִיָּא רָז

Commenting on the word for “light” in the Holy Tongue, the Baal Shem Tov declared: “The word אוֹר (which means ‘light’) is numerically equivalent to רָז (raz, which means ‘secret’) [207].

    דעֶר וואָס וֵוייס דעֶם סוֹד וואָס אִין יעֶדעֶר זאַךְ, קאָן לִיכְטִיג מאַכעֶן

A person who knows the secret within any entity can diffuse light.”

  • Hayom Yom 5 Elul - Wrapping the Talis Gadol

    מִנְהָגֵנוּ בִּלְבִישַׁת טַלִּית גָּדוֹל

Our custom in putting on the tallis:

    מַנִּיחִים הַטַּלִּית גָּדוֹל מְקוּפָּל עַל כָּתֵף יָמִין

The folded tallis is placed on the right shoulder [with the four tzitzis in front],

    וּבוֹדְקִים הַצִּיצִית. בְּשַׁעַת הַבְּדִיקָה אוֹמְרִים בָּרְכִי נַפְשִׁי גו

and one checks the tzitzis while reciting [the two verses beginning] Barchi nafshi.

    אַחַר כָּך לוֹקְחִים הַטַּלִּית מִן הַכָּתֵף, פּוֹשְׁטִים אוֹתוֹ

The tallis is then unfolded and opened wide.

    מְנַשְּׁקִים שְׂפַת הַטַּלִּית, מַחֲזִיר אוֹתוֹ מִכְּנֶגֶד פָּנָיו לַאֲחוֹרָיו

After kissing its [upper] edge, it is swung around from the position in which it is held in front of the worshiper until it is hanging behind him.

    וּמַתְחִיל בִּרְכַּת לְהִתְעַטֵּף בְּצִיצִית

At this point the blessing lehisateif betzitzis is begun,

    סִיּוּם הַבְּרָכָה סָמוּךְ לִכְרִיכַת בּ' כַּנְפוֹת יָמִין סָבִיב צַוָּארוֹ לַאֲחוֹרָיו בְּצַד שְׂמֹאל

and it is completed as one is about to bring the two right-hand corners of the tallis in front of the neck and over the left shoulder. [Thus all four tzitzis are now on the left side, two in front and two behind.]

    (עַיֵּין שְׁאֵרִית יְהוּדָא, אוֹרַח חַיִּים סִימָן א, דִּבְרֵי נְחֶמְיָה, אוֹרַח חַיִּים סִימָן ט)

  • Hayom Yom 4 Elul - Humankind four terms: Adam, Ish, Gever, Enosh

    סֵדֶר בִּרְכוֹת הַתּוֹרָה

The manner in which the blessings before the public Torah Reading are recited is as follows:

    נוֹגֵעַ בְּטַלִּיתוֹ בִּתְחִלַּת הַקְּרִיאָה וּבְסוֹפָהּ

[After the Torah scroll has been rolled open, the congregant called to the reading] should touch the beginning and end of the passage [that is about to be read for him] with his tallis

    נוֹשֵׁק הַטַּלִּית בְּמָקוֹם שֶׁנָּגַע בַּסֵּפֶר תּוֹרָה

and then kiss the part of the tallis that touched the scroll.

    גוֹלֵל הַסֵּפֶר תּוֹרָה

    After rolling it closed,

    מַפְנֶה פָּנָיו, קְצַת, לְיָמִין וּמְבָרֵךְ

he turns slightly to the right and recites the blessing,

    פּוֹתֵחַ הַסֵּפֶר תּוֹרָה וְקוֹרֵא

then opens the scroll, and [it is read].

    בְּמַעֲלַת מִין הָאֱנוֹשִׁי, יֶשְׁנָם אַרְבָּעָה תוֹאֲרִים

Four terms are used to describe the uniqueness of humanity:

    אָדָם — מַעֲלַת הַמּוֹחִין וְהַשֵּׂכֶל

    adam reflects the quality of intellect that is lodged in the brain;

    אִישׁ — מַעֲלַת הַלֵּב וְהַמִּדּוֹת

    ish refers to the quality of emotion that is lodged in the heart;

    אֱנוֹשׁ — הַחֲלִישׁוּת בְּאֶחָד מֵהֶם בְּשֵׂכֶל אוֹ בְּמִדּוֹת, אוֹ בִּשְׁתֵּיהֶם

    enosh indicates weakness in either or both the intellectual and emotional abilities;

    גֶּבֶר — מִתְגַּבֵּר עַל עַצְמוֹ

gever denotes a person who overcomes his own limitations,

    לְהָסִיר הַמְּנִיעוֹת וְעִכּוּבִים לְהָשִׂיג אַחַת הַמַּעֲלוֹת אוֹ בְּשֵׂכֶל אוֹ בְּמִדּוֹת

removing the blocks and obstacles that would hinder his attainment of the positive quality of intellect or of emotion.

    הַיְנוּ דְּגֶּבֶר עוֹסֵק עִם הָאֱנוֹשׁ לְהַגְבִּיהוֹ לְמַעֲלַת אִישׁ אוֹ אָדָם

That is to say, the gever works with the enosh [within himself] to elevate him to the level of ish or of adam.

    וּמֵאַחַר דְּאֶפְשָׁר לַעֲשׂוֹת מֵאֱנוֹשׁ אִישׁ אוֹ אָדָם

Hence, since an enosh can be made into an ish or an adam,

    הֲרֵי בְּהֶכְרֵחַ דְּגַם בֶּאֱנוֹשׁ יֶשְׁנָם כָּל אוֹתָם הַמַּעֲלוֹת שֶׁיֶּשְׁנָם בְּאִישׁ וְגַם בָּאָדָם

we must say that an enosh has [in potential] all the positive qualities that both an ish and an adam possess.
