  • Hayom Yom 3 Elul - The souls mission for which it was created

A person who believes in Divine Providence

knows that “the steps of a man are made firm by G‑d.”

[A person goes to] a particular place because his soul must refine and perfect something there.

For hundreds of years, or even from the very beginning of creation,

the object that must be refined or rectified

waits for that soul to come and do that task.

Similarly, this soul itself, from the moment of its emanation and creation,

awaits the time that it will descend [to the physical world] to refine and perfect that which has been assigned to it.

  • Hayom Yom 2 Elul - Jewish people posses spiritual treasures

The Jewish people are called “a cherished land,”

for they possess many precious qualities, [including] their love of G‑d, their fear of Him, and their upstanding character traits.

[But like treasures buried in the earth,] the revelation of these positive qualities depends solely upon the person who evokes them.

It is obvious that springs of fresh water exist in all parts of the earth.

The difference lies only in how close or far they are [from the surface].

If so, everything depends on the digger and his patience and deliberateness.

Since the will is a superior power [within the soul], it decrees and directs [the activity of] all the powers,

compelling them to function and act according to its orders.

Thus one’s main task is to arouse the will to act and function, both with regard to oneself and to others.

  • Hayom Yom 1 Elul - Saying 3 chapters of Tehillim everyday in Elul

When the Tzemach Tzedek was nine years old, the Alter Rebbe told him:

“I received a directive from my mentor (the Maggid of Mezritch) who received it from his mentor (the Baal Shem Tov) who received it from [Achiyah HaShiloni], who is known to have been his mentor,

that in the course of each day from the second day of Rosh Chodesh Elul until Yom Kippur,

one should recite three chapters of Tehillim.

On Yom Kippur, one should recite 36 chapters:

nine before Kol Nidrei, nine before going to sleep, nine after the Mussaf service, and nine after the Neilah service.

If one did not begin [this program] on the second day of Rosh Chodesh [Elul],

he should begin on the day [he remembered, according to the schedule for that day, and later] should make good the readings that he missed.

  • Hayom Yom 30 Menachem Av - The expansiveness of Chassidic teachings

[On this day] we begin reciting [the psalm] LeDavid A-donai Ori [in the Morning and Afternoon Services].

The custom in the household of the Rebbe [Rayatz] was to practice sounding the shofar in the course of the day.

We begin sounding the shofar after [the morning] prayers from the second day of Rosh Chodesh.

At first, the Alter Rebbe would deliver short maamarim.

For example, the maamar entitled Zecher Rav Tuvcha, with its commentary that appears in the Siddur [Im Dach],

was delivered in six installments, [the total] being somewhat longer than the printed version.

  • Hayom Yom 29 Menachem Av - Serve G-d with your own efforts

One must serve G‑d by his own efforts.

[A person’s service] is higher when he is led by the hand from Above,

but it is more cherished when it is generated by his own efforts.

  • Hayom Yom 28 Menachem Av - Two step cure for spiritual illness

There are two general approaches to healing physical illness:

    (a) to treat the particular organ or faculty that is damaged, ailing, or weak; or

    (b) to strengthen the healthy organs and faculties so that they will overcome the disability of the ailing organ or faculty and heal it.

Analogous to this in the case of spiritual sickness are two approaches to avodah:

    (a)teshuvah, and (b) good deeds.

  • Hayom Yom 27 Menachem Av - Elul is a month of reckoning

[On Shabbos Mevarchim, it is our custom] to recite the entire Book of Tehillim early in the morning and to hold a farbrengen on that day.

Elul is a month of reckoning.

Just as a businessman who wants to run his business properly and most profitably

must take stock from time to time and correct anything amiss,

so too must we act in our spiritual work of avodas HaShem.

Throughout the year the Jewish people study Torah, observe mitzvos, and cultivate desirable character traits.

The month of Elul is the time of reckoning,

when each and every Jew according to his capacity,

be he a Torah scholar or a businessman,

has to make a fair account within himself over everything that has transpired in his life in the course of the past year.

Thus, he can acknowledge the good points in his Divine service and reinforce them, as well as correct the shortcomings in himself and in his efforts.

And by virtue of such positive preparation, we are found worthy of being blessed with a good and sweet year, both materially and spiritually.

  • Hayom Yom 26 Menachem Av - Telling Chassidic stories

From a public talk of my revered father, [the Rebbe Rashab]:

Part of the chassidic “exodus from Egypt”

is the mitzvah to recount the story of the exodus from Egypt verbally.

This means telling chassidic stories, and listening and internalizing them in one’s innermost self.

One should realize that every story offers a directive for our lives.

Every story ought to refine our character,

produce inner gusto in the loving performance of mitzvos,

and sensitize us to perceive the pleasantness of the teachings of Chassidus.

  • Hayom Yom 25 Menachem Av - Women and the study of Torah

My revered father, [the Rebbe Rashab,] writes in a letter:

“I heard in the name of our forerunners — the Rebbeim, of blessed memory —

that for a daughter, too, [in the prayer that is offered when the father of a newborn child is called to the Reading of the Torah, we ask that the parents should be blessed with success in raising her] ‘to Torah,’ and [not only] ‘to marriage, and to good deeds.’

For our Sages state (Berachos 17a): ‘By virtue of what do women earn merit? By seeing to it that their children attend the synagogue to study the Written Law, and that their husbands study the Oral Law in the house of the Sages, and by waiting for their husbands until they return from the house of the Sages.’”
