A special Shavuos-related mitzvah pertaining to Jewish girls is lighting Yom-Tov candles. It is a great mitzvah to ensure that even very young girls should light Shabbos and Yom-Tov candles. (They should light before their mother, etc. Additionally, it is the Jewish custom that for the first night of Yom-Tov, the candles are lit before Yom-Tov.) On Shavuos, the lighting is accompanied by the bracha Shehechiyanu, and the simple meaning of it should be explained to the girl: thanking Hashem for having reached this time when she is able to fulfill such a mitzvah by which she illuminates her surroundings, not only spiritually but also physically, to the extent that even a non-Jew sees etc. And her bracha echoes throughout the entire house, with the whole family responding Amen after her, and Hashem Himself responds Amen as well, as He does every time a Jew makes a bracha (because Hashem keeps His own commandments, as the verse states, “He relates His word to Yaakov” etc.) (To be continued.)

[Continued.] When many Jews gather together, the yetzer hara may try to convince a Jew that there are two entities here – himself and his personal needs, and the others. And although they all get along and there is no argument between them, they are not one being. But one must know that the Jewish people are given the tremendous power not only to avoid strife between them; not only to avoid separation between them (“What is mine is mine and what is yours is yours,” which Hashem calls “the trait of Sodom”); and not only to help one another – but to become one being. Similarly, although Aharon, Miriam, and Moshe each had a unique mission (the Clouds of Glory in Aharon’s merit, the water in Miriam’s merit, and the man in Moshe’s merit) – Moshe, who was the third, brought about true unity among them. Similarly regarding every individual: although each of the six hundred thousand Jewish souls has its unique mission in the world, the Torah, which was given “in the third month,” grants them the power to all become one being.

This year’s convention is taking place on Rosh Chodesh Sivan, which the Torah calls “the third month.” Regarding the Giving of the Torah, the Gemara [Shabbos 88] emphasizes that “He gave the threefold Torah [the Tanach] to the threefold people [Kohanim, Levi’im, and Yisraelim] through the third one [Moshe]…in the third month.” The lesson from the focus on the number three is as follows: When there is only one entity, there is no room for disagreement, which becomes possible when there are two. The role of the third entity is to not only remove any conflict from the two, but to turn them into a single being. Although it might seem that number one (where there is no possibility of dispute in the first place) is preferable to the number three, this is the whole purpose of the soul’s descent “from a high rooftop” (from a world of oneness) to a “deep pit” (a world of multiplicity): for the Jew, through the power of the Torah, to bring true unity (“the third”) to the world. (To be continued.)

The seven weeks between Pesach and Shavuos are days of preparation for receiving the Torah, such that the Torah becomes one’s guide for daily life. Because the Torah is a guide for all aspects of daily life, which are generally divided into two categories – routine occurrences, and unique occurrences (and similarly, in the way Hashem conducts Himself with every Jew and with the Jewish people as a whole, there is a natural mode of conduct and a miraculous mode of conduct) – therefore, in the Torah there are also mitzvos that recall Hashem’s natural conduct, and mitzvos that recall His miraculous conduct. Both aspects are present in the mitzvah of Shabbos: (1) The reason for the mitzvah of Shabbos stated in the Aseres Hadibros in parashas Yisro is “for in six days Hashem made the heavens and the earth, and He rested on the seventh day.” This strengthens one’s belief that the world and all its seemingly natural happenings are not independent entities, chas v’shalom, but were created by Hashem. (2) The reason for the mitzvah of Shabbos stated in the Aseres Hadibros in parashas Va’eschanan is that “You must remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Hashem your G-d took you out from there with a strong hand…,” and since then, we are servants of Hashem. A Jew must remember that not only then, but also today, Hashem frees him from being enslaved to the laws of nature when they conflict with Torah and mitzvos; one is not a servant to them, but a servant to Hashem.

Parashas Bamidbar states that unlike the rest of the Jewish people, who were counted from age twenty, the tribe of Levi, as the “King’s legion” and “keepers of the charge of the Sanctuary,” was counted from one month old (i.e. from birth, once the child is no longer in the category of possibly being unviable). And this is despite the fact that seemingly the opposite should be true: The reason the other tribes were counted from age twenty is because they had to wait until they were fit to serve in the army of the Jewish people etc.; surely then, those responsible for the awesome task of keeping the charge of the Sanctuary – which only began from age thirty – should have had to wait at least as long before being counted). The lesson is that although the service of going out and conquering the world (“going out to the army”) and transforming it into a dwelling place for Hashem requires much preparation (“twenty years”), nevertheless, the service of guarding the Mishkan and the soul within it (the spiritual service of the Levi within every individual) is present within a Jew from the moment he is born, and already then Hashem relies on him for that task.

Parashas Bamidbar is always read before Matan Torah. The lesson is as follows: The first stage in chinuch (chinuch of a child as well as chinuch of oneself) is to know that before and without Torah, everything (even things that are kosher and permitted) are in the category of “midbar” – a desolate, undesirable desert. It is not like some claim, that there are three categories in the world: things that are a mitzvah, things that are forbidden, and optional things, from which a person may derive pleasure as he wishes (they argue: is it not a great mitzvah to bring pleasure to a creation of Hashem, and certainly to a fellow Jew? And since by giving another person physical enjoyment, one fulfills the mitzvah of “loving your fellow like yourself,” it would follow that one should also enjoy these pleasures himself). Rather, even optional things were given only so that one choose to use them in such a way that “All your deeds are for the sake of Heaven” and in order to “Know Him in all your ways.” When worldly matters exist without Torah, they are a desert, a place “where there is no water” – “Water refers only to Torah” – and automatically it becomes a place of “snakes, vipers, and scorpions,” the complete opposite of a “city” and a “field.” It is specifically through Torah that everything in the world is elevated (“Naso”).

Shelishi of parashas Bamidbar describes how the Jewish people’s camp was positioned in the desert: “Each man by his banner…the Jewish people must encamp… around the Ohel Moed.” That is, the Ohel Moed stood in the center, surrounded by the four banners, which signifies the merit Hashem granted the Jewish people of guarding and protecting (as it were) the Ohel Moed and the Aron and Luchos within it. The lesson is that a Jew must guard and protect the Torah and the Mishkan within his own heart. And just as this is how the Jewish people were positioned both when they encamped and when they traveled, so too the role of the Jewish people in safeguarding the Torah applies at all times and in all places – when they are in a state of tranquility and even when they are in the “desert of the nations” in the time of exile.

One of the things that the existence of the Jewish people depends upon is the preservation of the Jewish family, the importance of which is seen in the way the Jewish people were counted: “according to their families, according to their fathers’ houses” (as it says in sheini of parashas Bamidbar). But unfortunately, the emphasis on the family unit has been completely neglected, even in families that keep Torah and mitzvos. We see what happens, Rachmana litzlan, when the father, mother, son, and daughter live in four separate worlds instead of operating as a single family unit, by placing an emphasis on the children honoring their parents and the parents “teaching them to your children,” which causes the parents and children become important in each another’s eyes etc. All the more so in families where the children have lost their way from Yiddishkeit and wander about “confused in the land,” which results from parents being preoccupied with their own concerns and leaving the children to find their way alone in the darkness of exile. One practical suggestion for preserving the family unit is that at least on Shabbos, and especially during the Shabbos meal, the entire family should sit together and talk about Shabbos etc. And when a family is healthy on Shabbos, that causes it to be healthy during the week as well.

A lesson from the name of parashas “Bamidbar Sinai”: Exile is called a “desert,” i.e., a place unfit for human settlement, because the true, permanent place for a Jew to live is in Eretz Yisroel with the Beis Hamikdash standing, not in exile in the diaspora. But the task of the Jewish people is to transform their place in the desert of exile into “Eretz Yisroel” and into a dwelling place for Hashem such that “I will dwell among them” (“Sinai”). Similarly, the body is called a “desert” in relation to the soul, which is “an actual part of G-d from above” (Eretz Yisroel). The purpose of the soul’s descent into the body is to transform the desert of the body into “Sinai,” which is connected to the Torah that was given at Sinai to every Jew as an inheritance etc. And one must not think: In a world of billions of people, what can I possibly accomplish with just one deed etc. – because every Jew, man or woman, has the ability, with one deed, word, or even thought, to tip the scale and bring salvation and deliverance to the entire world. From this we understand how much we must cherish every moment, which can be used for one positive deed, word, or thought.

It is impossible to achieve true peace in Eretz Yisroel (as the verse states in sheini of parashas Bechukosai, “I will grant peace in the land”) with any approach that runs contrary to the Torah. Chas v’shalom to “deliberate” whether to fulfill a clear ruling in the Laws of Shabbos (Orach Chaim 329) which states: “If gentiles besiege Jewish cities…in a city near the border, even if they have come only for matters of straw and stubble, Shabbos is desecrated against them” to defend the Jewish people. In this regard, it makes no difference whether it is Eretz Yisroel or the diaspora. And “The Torah will never be changed” – no one can change a ruling in the Shulchan Aruch. The only path, and the guaranteed path, to achieve true peace in Eretz Yisroel (according to its borders – completeness of the land, together with completeness of the Torah and completeness of the people), and true peace wherever a Jew is found, is to “walk in My statutes and keep My commandments and perform them,” including this halacha in the Laws of Shabbos. “And I will lead you upright” – we must not be intimidated by goyim or by goyishkeit, and when a Jew stands firmly to defend Jews and Yiddishkeit, then, even when “darkness covers the earth,” even when we are still in exile, “Hashem will shine upon you.”
