    Synopsis

Regarding the mitzvah of Sefiras Ha’Omer (in parashas Emor), the question is asked: What is the purpose of counting days, which seemingly doesn’t change the day in any way? The explanation is as follows: People count things that have importance. In this case, the importance of these days is that they are the days during which the Jewish people left Egypt and became free etc., and by counting each day, one adds even greater importance and significance to it. This also explains why the bracha on Sefiras Ha’Omer is made every day (unlike the bracha Shehechiyanu, which is recited only on the first day of a Yom Tov, or the first time one benefits from a new fruit or a new garment): A Jew understands that every new day is not merely a continuation of the day before. Rather, every day must be infused with additional vitality from the Toras of life. And there is a special emphasis here on the Jewish woman, the Akeres Habayis (mainstay of the home), who sets the home’s conduct in a way that aligns with the Ikar (the main focus of things), which is the Torah of life etc.

    Synopsis

    (a) One may say, I am comfortable in exile, and what more would Moshiach add for me (on the contrary, in exile he can do whatever he wishes, whereas when Moshiach comes…). But when he says the words, “We hope for Your salvation all day” in Shemoneh Esrei, and contemplates the meaning of the words, and he says it like a servant before his Master – then surely he would not agree to delay the Redemption for even a single moment. (b) On the words “Emor el haKohanim” (“Say to the Kohanim…”), Rashi says: “[The verse uses a double expression,] Emor (‘Say’) and V’amarta (‘you must say’), to admonish adults regarding minors [to ensure they don’t become impure either].” This follows the verse in the previous parashah, “You must be holy” on which Rashi says: “Be separate…from sin” (citing verses from parashas Emor), meaning that the children must be cautioned to be completely separate and distinct even from any association with sin (not only from sin itself). By fulfilling this admonishment (“lehazhir”), the adults will come to shine (“zehirus”).

    Synopsis

On the verse (in rishon of parashas Emor), “The Kohen who is greater than his brothers…” our Sages derive that the Kohen Gadol must be “greater than his brethren in strength…and in wealth,” and if he lacks wealth, then his fellow Kohanim must make him wealthy from their own property, as the verse states, “‘The Kohen who is greater (hagadol) than his brothers’ – elevate him (gadleihu) from the property of his brothers.” That is, even when the Kohanim themselves are the ones who elevated him, they must still recognize that he is the Kohen Gadol, while they are ordinary Kohanim who are forbidden from entering the Kodesh Hakodoshim. In the past, when someone had a halachic question, he would go to a Rav for a ruling, but recently, a new pattern has emerged: The laypeople show the Rav where to look in order to determine the ruling, and they even tell him what the ruling should be. Sometimes, they even threaten to dismiss the Rav if he fails to rule according to their wishes. But this verse teaches us that: (1) On the one hand, the laypeople must strengthen and elevate the Rav if he lacks firmness of his own. (2) Nevertheless, the Rav is the one who “enters the Kodesh HaKodashim” to render halachic rulings, and the laypeople, as a “kingdom of (ordinary) Kohanim” must not interfere at all. This is one of three good things that can be learned even from “Reform” congregations: (1) They do not speak during the repetition of the Amidah or the Torah reading. (2) They are mindful of the honor of the synagogue. (3) They respect the rabbi and do not interfere in his domain.

    Synopsis

One must tell others the whole truth about the Torah, without compromise. And if you don’t tell another Jew the whole truth, then later when someone does, and that Jew is awakened and transformed, he may come back to you with a complaint for not having told him earlier…Ahavas Yisroel requires drawing every Jew near, without conceding even the slightest detail. As the Gemara relates about Rav who, upon arriving in Bavel, “found an open area” (a lack of observance with regard to meat and milk, eruvin, and using a tree on Shabbos), “and he fenced it in” (Rashi: “he imposed stringencies upon them in order to make a safeguard and distance them from sin, like a person who fences in a breached field to protect it.”). And in was precisely in this way that Bavel become a place of Torah, to the extent that “the halachah follows Bavli.” The lesson is that when one encounters a breach, an area in Torah in which the generation isn’t careful, the correct approach is not to relinquish any aspect of Yiddishkeit, but on the contrary, to “fence it in” by adding additional stringencies. Even if at first people won’t be happy about it, nevertheless, since this is Hashem’s will as set forth in the Torah whose “ways are ways of pleasantness and all its paths are peace,” this is the true expression of Ahavas Yisroel, and in the end they will thank him for it.

    Synopsis

As the Alter Rebbe writes, love of one’s fellow Jew, love of the Torah, and love of Hashem, are “all one.” That love of one’s fellow Jew (as the verse states in sheini of parashas Kedoshim, “You must love your fellow like yourself”) is linked to the love of Torah is based on the Mishnah, “Be among the disciples of Aharon…loving the creations, and [therefore] bringing them close to the Torah.” This is also understood by simple logic: if one truly loves another – and therefore helps him with a few coins – then certainly one must bring him closer to the Torah, which is even “more precious than pearls.” Some mistakenly think that by altering the Torah “just a little” in order to bring the Torah closer to another person they are benefiting the person, but the truth is the opposite: this will lead him to be lenient even in more serious matters etc., and ultimately to become disconnected from the source of living waters – Torah and mitzvos. Even a single moment of connection to Torah and mitzvos is eternal and transcends time altogether; therefore, if one delays bringing another Jew closer to Torah for even a moment, he is withholding from him something eternal. But love of the Torah alone is not enough, because one might rely on his own understanding of Torah, and “Bribery blinds the eyes of the wise…” Therefore, one must also love Hashem: before studying Torah he must recite the bracha, “Blessed are You, Hashem, Who gives the Torah” in the present tense etc.

    Synopsis

(Continued.) Based on the above, we can understand the concept of kisui hadam in terms of man’s divine service, and accordingly, why the Gemara says that “the father of them all is blood”: In matters of holiness there must be an abundance of “blood” (vitality and enthusiasm), like the blood of offerings that was offered upon the Mizbeach, which mostly came from domesticated animals (who have more blood than wild animals and birds). In contrast, things that have less “blood” and vitality (like the blood of wild animals and birds) may be used for permitted, mundane matters, but with the caveat that their blood must be “covered,” and specifically “with earth.” That is, out of concern that a person will feel the opposite of humility from the very fact that Hashem chose him and gave him a mitzvah etc., one might wish to refrain entirely from the whole matter of shechitah, so as to avoid a situation where he would have to cover the blood etc. But we are told that the solution is not to avoid shechitah altogether (because shechitah is itself a mitzvah), but rather to find a way to prevent the feeling of self, namely, by “covering the blood with earth,” which represents bitul (as in the expression, “…and let my soul be as dust before all).” With this mitzvah the Rambam concludes the Book of Kedushah, which represents the general concept of becoming a holy nation by keeping the mitzvos (“…Who has sanctified us with His commandments…”), whose “father is blood.”

    Synopsis

The principle that “one should not regard the mitzvos with scorn” to a person is derived from the mitzvah of kisui hadam (in chamishi of parashas Acharei), where the law is that the blood may not be covered with one’s foot. As the Gemara says, “The father of them all is blood.” Seemingly, why is this principle derived from kisuy hadam, which is not a particularly stringent mitzvah (to the contrary – there are several leniencies: the blood can be covered even by someone other than the one who slaughtered the animal, and even by women etc.). Moreover, why does the Gemara say, “The father of them all is blood,” if the principle is derived not from the blood itself (which “has no sanctity”), but from the manner of covering it? The explanation is as follows: The “blood” that is the “father of them all” is the blood (which represents the vitality and enthusiasm) of the offerings brought upon the Mizbeach. In other words, all mitzvos must be performed with vitality and enthusiasm. This can be better understood by explaining why the mitzvah of kisuy hadam applies only to wild animals and birds, but not domesticated animals: Seemingly, the reason for the mitzvah is to negate the tendency of cruelty (i.e., one should not eat meat when the animal’s blood is right in front of him). In that case, the mitzvah would seem to be even more applicable to domesticated animals, which have more blood than wild animals and birds? The answer is the mitzvah applies only to non-sacred meat, and since most offerings come from domesticated animals, the Torah did not obligate us to cover the blood of domesticated animals at all, so as not to differentiate between sacred and non-sacred animals, but only the blood of wild animals and birds (from which only a minority of offerings are brought). It should be noted that in the desert, there was no non-sacred slaughtered meat from domesticated animals, and there were no consecrated birds (because birds are used for a poor person’s offering, and the Jewish people in the desert were wealthy). (To be continued.)

    Synopsis

As the Rambam writes, immersion in a mikveh, where a person is entirely covered by water, represents the immersion and nullification of one’s entire being in the “waters of pure knowledge” (as alluded to in the fact that טבילה is comprised of the same letters as הביטל). Regarding immersion, the law is that a spring purifies even in the smallest amount. That is, water that is openly connected to its source purifies a person from even the most severe form of impurity (contact with a corpse) and with even the smallest amount, provided that one is entirely covered by it (theoretically, a single drop can be thinly spread over one’s entire body). In terms of divine service: when a person is completely immersed in an awareness that is openly connected to G-dliness, with nothing intervening between them (neither eating and drinking, nor business dealings, nor even Torah study when one studies with the feeling that his success results from his own abilities rather than from Hashem’s blessing), then even the slightest measure of this awareness can purify him from the most severe impurity, and then “before Hashem you will be purified” (as the verse states in shelishi of parashas Acharei). And this is the function of the inner dimension of Torah: even a single drop of it can purify a person...

The concept of m’lechatchilah ariber (as shown and empowered by the Rebbe Maharash, whose birthday it is) is emphasized in: (1) The beginning of the Torah – Bereishis (which starts with a beis, the first letter of the word bracha) bara (which connotes creation by the power of Hashem’s Essence); additionally, as the Midrash says, the verse “and the spirit of G-d hovered over…” refers to the spirit of Moshiach, and moreover, with the light created on the first day of Creation, Adam HaRishon was able to gaze from one end of the world to the other. (2) The conclusion of the Torah – “…with regard to all the signs and wonders…in view of the entire Jewish people.” (3) The beginning of Shas –“Me’eimasai…,” which alludes to the higher level of awe of Hashem. (4) The conclusion of Shas – “Hashem will give strength to His people; Hashem will bless His people with peace.” (5) The beginning of Tanya –“Mashbi’in oso,” which also connotes sova (satiety). (6) The conclusion of Part I of Tanya – “…May He be blessed and exalted.” (7) The beginning of the Shulchan Aruch – “I have set Hashem before me constantly.” Similarly, in a Jew’s task of spreading the wellsprings outward, each of the three elements (“spreading,” “your wellsprings,” and “outward”) embodies the concept of m’lechatchilah ariber.

    Synopsis

The mitzvah of family purity is a primary, foundational, and vital mitzvah that affects the entire life of the husband and wife, their children, their children’s children, and the entirety of the Jewish people until the end of all generations. There is no real reason for the fact that rabbonim have not discussed it publicly, and these days, one cannot rely on the assumption that when the time comes, young women will learn about it at home (and certainly not about) all the detailed laws; therefore, there is no alternative but for rabbonim to speak loudly and publicly and at every opportunity about the importance of family purity in general, and to immediately announce the establishment of classes on the detailed laws where they can answer questions etc. And this is the first mission incumbent upon the women – to demand from the rabbonim (in a respectful manner) to establish classes on the subject in shuls and girls’ schools etc., and not to rest until they are implemented in practice. Even during the summer, it is possible and obligatory to arrange such classes – and it can all be done in a modest manner etc.
