    Synopsis

Regarding the laws of charamim (in shishi and shevi’i of parashas Bechukosai), the Chinuch explains that the reason for the mitzvah is because in truth, a Jew and his property belong entirely to Hashem. Therefore, a Jew’s property can never really become cherem (which connotes the opposite of blessing). If a Jew does declare his field cherem, it is effective only in the sense that he relinquishes ownership of the field, but to whom is the field given – to Hashem, for the upkeep of the Beis Hamikdash and the like. Meaning, not only is a Jew connected to the source of blessings, but even a Jew’s possessions cannot enter the realm of the opposite of blessing, because they are Hashem’s property. Accordingly, we can understand how careful one must be not to damage or waste a Jew’s physical possessions etc. And how much more so when it comes to children, whom Hashem entrusts to parents as a “deposit”: special care must be taken in their upbringing to ensure that they do not come into contact with anything that is the opposite of blessing G-d forbid (even verbally), and to raise them to Torah, marriage, and good deeds.

    Synopsis

Todays’ Rambam states: “Who is a Kohen whose lineage is established? Anyone concerning whom two witnesses testify that he is a Kohen, the son of so-and-so the Kohen, the son of so-and-so extending back until a Kohen who served on the Mizbeach…We do not investigate [a Kohen’s lineage] beyond the Mizbeach.” The concept of a “Kohen who served upon the Mizbeach” applies even after the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash, because “Tefillos were instituted in place of the daily offerings,” and every Jew is fit and commanded to daven to Hashem, even non-Kohanim, and even women. This is the meaning of the Rambam’s statement: By virtue of tefillah, every Jew, whoever he may be, now has the status of a “Kohen who served upon the Mizbeach,” and therefore, “requires no investigation.” This idea is particularly emphasized in the time of exile, and particularly in the time of Ikvesa d’Meshicha, when the simple faith of every Jew is at its greatest force.

    Synopsis

The days of Sefirah in general, and Lag B’Omer in particular, are associated with Rabbi Akiva and his students. A lesson from Rabbi Akiva: At the beginning of his journey (when he was unsure whether he could succeed in Torah study, and he was also extremely poor etc.) he saw drops of water falling on a rock, and he said to himself: If drops of water can break through a rock by constantly falling on it day after day, week after week, and month and month, then certainly I can succeed in Torah study if I learn with determination and perseverance. Thus he became great in Torah, and eventually he was blessed with physical wealth, too. So too, every student at the beginning of his path in Torah study, who wonders whether he will succeed, must know that if he firmly resolves to learn Torah, he will surely succeed in learning, and in life in general. A lesson from Rabbi Akiva’s students: Only those who came after Lag B’Omer succeeded and are remembered forever. For one’s toil in Torah to succeed, one must study with a spirit of Ahavas Yisroel. May Hashem grant you success, with a strong desire to learn Torah properly, in accordance with the will of my father-in-law, the founder of the yeshiva, who blessed every one of his students to succeed in his path, so that we will be able to take pride in you and say, “See the seedlings we have grown” – this is the fruit of the yeshiva.

    Synopsis

The Redemption of the Jewish people from exile could have been in such a way that Hashem remains in His palace, as it were, in a state of freedom, and lead, protect, and redeem the Jewish people from there at the proper time. But Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai says, “In every place to which they were exiled, the Shechinah is with them”: Hashem determined that it is impossible for Him to be in a state of freedom while the Jewish people are in exile, because “in all their suffering, He suffers.” Therefore, wherever a Jew goes, Hashem goes with him, and remains together with him until the very last moment of the exile. Only then does “Hashem your G-d return [with] your captivity” – when the Jew leaves the exile, Hashem leaves exile together with him. The lesson is: If a Jew argues, since the Jewish people are “the fewest of all the nations,” especially during exile, how can we be expected to keep Torah and mitzvos without being affected by all the challenges? The answer is that “In every place to which they were exiled” – wherever even a single Jew is found, “the Shechinah is with them” – Hashem is there with him. Obviously, then, if only a Jew resolves to follow the path of Hashem, nothing can stop him from doing so.

    Synopsis

On the verse (at the beginning of parashas Behar), “When you enter the land…the land must rest a Shabbos for Hashem. You may sow your field for six years…and in the seventh year the land must be given a complete rest…” the question is asked: why does the verse imply that Shemitah must be observed immediately upon entering the land (“When you enter the land”), if the seventh year doesn’t come until after the first six? From this we learn that the ultimate purpose of entering the land is for the “seventh year…a Shabbos for Hashem” – the year when the people are free from working the land and therefore fully available to serve Hashem. The same applies to every Jewish home: Immediately upon entering a Jewish home, and especially when a couple marries and starts a Jewish home, it must be with the sense that the ultimate purpose of everything done in the home is the state of Shabbos, the day of rest from the distractions and worries about earning a livelihood etc. Meaning, their entire conduct throughout the week must be founded upon true trust in Hashem, who provides everyone’s needs generously (“fatty meat and aged wine” as appropriate for Shabbos), and therefore they have no worries.

    Synopsis

Even one whose personal Beis Hamikdash is intact, and in whom Hashem dwells etc., must nevertheless ascend in holiness and reach a higher level of “Beis Hamikdash,” such that relative to this new, higher level of holiness, he is considered “impure” (similar to the law: “If one immersed for Chulin, he is presumed [pure] for Chulin and prohibited from Maasar…If he immersed for Terumah…he is forbidden from Kodesh…”). And this is the lesson from Pesach Sheini: Even if one has attained the ultimate perfection in his service (“Kodesh”), and in a manner of “Pesach” (“leaping” beyond all measure and limitation), nevertheless it is possible and necessary to rise even higher, and to attain a higher level of “Pesach” and beyond.

    Synopsis

To explain the argument of the men who were impure and said “Why should we be excluded from offering up Hashem’s sacrifice in its appointment time among the Jewish people”: The korban Pesach is unique in that, on the one hand it was brought by every individual, but on the other hand, all the people brought it together at the same time and in the same place, like a communal offering. Being that Hashem made the world in such a way that, among the millions of Jews, there would inevitably be some deaths, and therefore there would inevitably be at least some individuals who would be required to be impure that day as a result of tending to the dead – how can Hashem require the Korban to be brought at a time when it is forbidden for those individuals, such that they would be lacking this mitzvah? And their claim was accepted, resulting in the mitzvah of Pesach Sheini. The lesson is as follows: Even if it appears that there is a contradiction between what Hashem demands (to keep the mitzvos, to dedicate oneself to children’s education etc.) and the nature of the world (where one must spend many hours each day on other things etc.), nevertheless, if a Jew really desires to keep the mitzvos “among the Jewish people” – Hashem grants him the ability to do so.

    Synopsis

Regarding the Omer and Shtei Halechem (discussed in revi’i of parashas Emor), the Mishna states: “The Omer [offered on the second day of Pesach] permits [consumption of the new crop] in the rest of the country, and the Shtei Halechem [permits bringing meal offerings from the new grain] in the Mikdash. One may not bring meal offerings…before the Omer, and if he brought, they are invalid. Before the Shtei Halechem one may not bring [offerings from the new crop, but] if he brought, they are valid.” There is an opinion that the reason an offering brough from the new grain before the Shtei Halechem is valid after the fact is because the prohibition is not a prohibition on the new grain itself (with the Shtei Halechem changing its status to permitted, as is the case with the Omer, which permits grain for consumption in the rest of the country), but because the Shtei Halechem must be a “new meal offering,” and therefore, no other offering should be brought from the new grain before it. But from the wording of the Mishnah, “The Omer permits in the rest of the country and the Shtei Halechem in the Mikdash” indicates that just as the Omer permits the new grain in the rest of the country, so does the Shtei Halechem permit the new grain in the Beis Hamikdash. [And the reason a meal offering brought from the new grain in the Beis Hamikdash before the Shtei Halechem is valid after the fact is because it is not an independent prohibition, but part of that same prohibition as consuming new grain in the rest of the country. Since the Omer already permitted the general category of new grain for ordinary use, “the force of the prohibition is weakened,” such that a meal offering brought from the new grain before the Shtei Halechem is valid after the fact.) The lesson in Divine service is as follows: Just as the Shtei Halechem affects the status of the meal offerings in the Beis Hamikdash, so does studying Torah (which is compared to the Shtei Halechem), in a way that it is “new,” affect one’s performance of mitzvos (“offerings in the Beis Hamikdash”) by infusing them with life and beauty, “the best for Hashem.” And within Torah study itself, the inner dimension of Torah (the soul) affects the revealed dimension of Torah (the body) etc.

    Synopsis

Regarding the mitzvah of Sefiras Ha’Omer (in parashas Emor), the question is asked: What is the purpose of counting days, which seemingly doesn’t change the day in any way? The explanation is as follows: People count things that have importance. In this case, the importance of these days is that they are the days during which the Jewish people left Egypt and became free etc., and by counting each day, one adds even greater importance and significance to it. This also explains why the bracha on Sefiras Ha’Omer is made every day (unlike the bracha Shehechiyanu, which is recited only on the first day of a Yom Tov, or the first time one benefits from a new fruit or a new garment): A Jew understands that every new day is not merely a continuation of the day before. Rather, every day must be infused with additional vitality from the Toras of life. And there is a special emphasis here on the Jewish woman, the Akeres Habayis (mainstay of the home), who sets the home’s conduct in a way that aligns with the Ikar (the main focus of things), which is the Torah of life etc.

    Synopsis

    (a) One may say, I am comfortable in exile, and what more would Moshiach add for me (on the contrary, in exile he can do whatever he wishes, whereas when Moshiach comes…). But when he says the words, “We hope for Your salvation all day” in Shemoneh Esrei, and contemplates the meaning of the words, and he says it like a servant before his Master – then surely he would not agree to delay the Redemption for even a single moment. (b) On the words “Emor el haKohanim” (“Say to the Kohanim…”), Rashi says: “[The verse uses a double expression,] Emor (‘Say’) and V’amarta (‘you must say’), to admonish adults regarding minors [to ensure they don’t become impure either].” This follows the verse in the previous parashah, “You must be holy” on which Rashi says: “Be separate…from sin” (citing verses from parashas Emor), meaning that the children must be cautioned to be completely separate and distinct even from any association with sin (not only from sin itself). By fulfilling this admonishment (“lehazhir”), the adults will come to shine (“zehirus”).
