(a) The expression “didan notzach” (“victory is ours”) refers to the victory of the Rebbe, my father-in-law. (b) The source in Torah for proclaiming didan notzach is a story of the Midrash in Vayikra Rabbah: An Amora was approached by a good spirit that guarded the local river. The good spirit told the Amora that there was an evil spirit who intended to wrest control of the river and make trouble for the Jews who came to use it. The good spirit instructed the sage to gather the townspeople at the river, and that when the good spirit alerts them that the good spirit is approaching, they should cry out, “Didan notzach.” When the people did so, a drop of blood appeared on the face of the water, showing their victory over the evil spirit. The lesson is that when the yetzer tov says to listen to the Nasi of our generation, and the yetzer hara begins to argue and confuse and distract, etc., the yetzer hara is driven away when Jews gather and cry out, “Didan notzach” properly, the way the Nasi of our generation wishes. And this is the proof that indeed “We have been victorious” – when the yetzer hara is driven away.

The beginning of revi’i of parashas Vayigash states that when Yaakov saw the wagons Yosef had sent (an allusion to the eglah arufah, the subject Yaakov and Yosef had last studied together before Yosef's disappearance), he said, “My son Yosef is still alive.” Even in exile, it is true of every Jew that “Yosef my son is alive,” with the Torah of life and its mitzvos, of which it says, “and you shall live by them”; as the Maggid explains, when a Jew does a mitzvah, he makes the mitzvah come alive. For example, even kosher tefillin, which contain Hashem’s Name many times and which are holy even when they are lying on the table etc., do not possess the holiness and vitality that tefillin attain when a Jew actually puts them on and does the mitzvah of tefillin with them. This is also the lesson from the conclusion of this aliyah: Yaakov and all his offspring were only able to come to Egypt after Yocheved was born “between the walls.” Meaning, a baby Jewish girl, simply by being born, completes the count of “seventy souls,” making it possible for the Jewish people to enter Egypt, because the moment she is born, she inherits the entire Torah and its mitzvos, including this power that “Yosef my son is alive” even in Egypt. Already at the moment the Jewish people entered Egypt, Hashem ensured the birth of Yocheved, from whom emerged the houses of the Kohanim, Levi’im, and the kings (“He made houses for them”), in the merit of having “kept the boys alive” in Egypt etc.

In a few hours, in the bedtime Kerias Shema, an honest accounting will be made of what one has done on Zos Chanukah and on all the days of Chanukah (which are included within Zos Chanukah). These hours should be used to complete and perfect all matters of Chanukah and to ascend in holiness as much as possible; at the very least, one should resolve to complete everything that should have been done during Chanukah, and “The Holy One, blessed be He, links a good thought action.” And this should be done with joy, which breaks barriers; in this way, even in these few short hours remaining, one can complete and perfect the many hours of the entire Chanukah.

The Gemara says that the Chanukah candles are lit “corresponding to the outgoing days.” It follows that on the eighth day the candles are lit not only for the day itself, but also for previous seven days. The lesson is that if one truly desires, he has the power to illuminate not only the present day, but also all the days of the past. And this doesn’t just mean one can compensate now for what was lacking in the past by doing teshuvah; rather, even if one did everything properly in the days of the past, now he can illuminate them even more. In this way, one illuminates his entire home and all his surroundings, until even the darkness of exile is illuminated, as a preparation for the everlasting light of the complete Redemption.

One of the lessons from Chanukah is that although Jewish children may be “few” and “weak” compared to the gentile children of the world, that applies only to the body. But because every Jewish child possesses a soul that is “a portion of Hashem from above,” Hashem “delivers the mighty into the hands of the weak…” meaning, not only do the nations of the world have no influence over a Jewish child’s behavior, but on the contrary, they learn from the Jewish child how to behave with justice and integrity. Mattisyahu and his sons were not deterred by the “mighty” and the “many” who sought “to make them forget Your Torah and transgress the decrees of Your will,” and they went out to fight against them, holding banners inscribed with the word “Maccabi” (an acronym for “Who is like You among the mighty ones, Hashem”), and with that strength they were victorious and saw “great salvation.” Today, we no longer face such harsh tests. Instead, the challenge is to stand with mesiras nefesh against the yetzer hara who tries “to make them forget Your Torah” by getting them to waste time on games etc., and “to make them transgress the decrees of Your will” by not being so careful about kashrus etc. But they are shown “Your miracles,” “Your wonders,” and “Your salvations,” and they successfully defeat the yetzer hara.

To explain the special quality of the fifth day of Chanukah and why among the days of Chanukah it is one of particular celebration (some explain that it is the day of the Alter Rebbe’s release from his second imprisonment in the year 5561 (1800), but based on the principle that “Merit is brought about on a meritorious day,” we must say that the day itself possesses a special quality): The purpose of the Chanukah candles is to illuminate the darkness of the world, and the main novelty here lies in the weekdays of Chanukah, not on Shabbos Chanukah (when there is no darkness, as the Midrash says: regarding Shabbos the verse doesn’t say “there was nightfall and there was morning,” because on Shabbos “there is no darkness”). And this is the unique quality of the fifth day of Chanukah: it is the only day of Chanukah that can never fall on Shabbos. It contains no aspect of Shabbos, even potentially (unlike the other days of Chanukah, which can fall on Shabbos and therefore have at least a potential connection to Shabbos).

The novelty of this gathering is that the elderly are assembled together with the children. This provides an opportunity for the children to fulfill the mitzvah of “rising before an elderly person…,” and for the elderly to contribute to the children’s education based on the experience they have gained over the years. While some foolish people say that a person should become less active as they age, the opposite is true, as it is written, “Days speak, and many years impart wisdom,” and as we learn from lighting the Chanukah candles, where we add another candle every day (and regarding this, too, the elderly serve as a living example for the children). The relation between the joining of the elderly and the children, and the Yom Tov of Chanukah: (1) The purification of the Beis Hamikdash took place under the guidance of the elders and leaders of the Jewish people along with the kohanim, and they fought with mesiras-nefesh to annul the attempt of the Yevanim “to make them forget Your Torah and remove them from the decrees of Your will,” and they ensured that the Jewish education of children would continue. (2) The name “Chanukah” is related to the word “chinuch” (education). With respect to education, (a) the elderly teach the young, and (b) education starts when one is young, but continues his entire life, as the verse says, “Educate the child… even when he grows old…”.

On Chanukah, although one already fulfilled the mitzvah of lighting Chanukah candles fully on the first night, nevertheless, when the second night arrives one adds and lights two candles, and continues adding every subsequent night. This serves as a lesson for all matters of Torah and mitzvos – “a lamp is a mitzvah and the Torah is light” – that one must constantly grow and add from day to day. Additionally, just as we light the Chanukah candles repeatedly, forming a chazakah, so too with every mitzvah: after fulfilling a mitzvah the first time, we do it again and again at every opportunity, and, “A mitzvah that comes to your hand, do not delay it.” This applies especially to the mitzvah of tzedakah, which can and should be fulfilled many times a day. This also relates to the Jewish custom of giving Chanukah gelt: when a Jew receives money, he first and foremost gives a portion of it to tzedakah (even though it is money he could have used to purchase “the life of his soul”), and this is how children should be educated. May it be Hashem’s will that they will immediately be able to use their Chanukah gelt for donations toward the third Beis Hamikdash.

Tuesday is also the day of the week upon which 19 Kislev fell this year (as it did the first year 5559) – a day associated with spreading the wellsprings of Chassidus outward, as well as spreading the study of Nigleh (because Nigleh is the “body” of Torah, which goes wherever the “soul” goes) and spreading mitzvah observance in general, and in a manner of mehadrin min hamehadrin, which on Chanukah is the “universally accepted custom.” We know that after the Alter Rebbe’s liberation, he arrived in Vitebsk on Tuesday, the second day of Chanukah. Notably, the second day of Chanukah is the first opportunity to observe the mitzvah of lighting Chanukah candles in the manner of mehadrin min hamehadrin in practice. The lesson is that everyone should firmly resolve to act in the manner of mehadrin min hamehadrin in all matters of Torah and mitzvos, beginning with the Mivtzoim, which will hasten the time when Hashem Himself will carry out the greatest “Mivtza” – the true and complete Redemption. Bli neder, I will be giving out dollars to everyone as Chanukah gelt, and surely everyone will add more of their own.

Explanation is required according to Nigleh as to why the Rebbeim would light Chanukah specifically in a doorway between two rooms inside the house, whereas it is understood from the Gemara that one should light Chanukah candles “at the entrance to one’s house on the outside,” and if one cannot, he should light at a window facing the public domain. And the Rebbeim did this even in times when there was no danger from people outside seeing the candles, and even where it was certain that ten Jews would be passing by in the public domain (thus fulfilling the requirement of pirsumei nisa) etc. (And we cannot simply answer that they did so because that is what they observed by their Rebbe – “since it came from the mouth of Rav Kahana…” – because then the question just becomes why their Rebbe did so.) This can be explained as follows: (1) The obligation to light the candles by the window applies only if the window is lower than twenty amos, as the Gemara says. (2) Most Chanukah menorahs these days have a back panel behind the candles. Therefore, if the menorah is placed facing the public domain, then (a) one would have to reach over the panel to light, which is difficult, and (b) the candles won’t be seen by the people inside the house because they will be blocked by the back panel. (Turning the menorah around after lighting it is not an option because “the lighting is the mitzvah,” so the candles shouldn’t be moved after lighting.) All of this is in the realm of discussion and debate, but practically speaking, since in practice the Rebbeim lit at the doorway inside the house, this is what every one of us should do.
