    Synopsis

The verse states in shelishi of parashas Shemos, “Moshe grew and he went out to his brethren and he saw their suffering, and he saw an Egyptian man striking a Hebrew man of his brethren.” That is, the very first thing Moshe Rabbeinu does after growing up is to leave Pharaoh’s palace, where he lacked nothing, etc., to go out and see whether there is a Jew suffering. And when he sees that it is possible for a goy to strike a Jew (or for goyishkeit to “strike” Yiddishkeit), he puts himself in danger to help him. Moreover: Moshe puts himself in danger specifically for a Jew who is on the lowest level, Shlomis bas Divri (as the Midrash says), who was the only “one, and the Torah publicized her.” And all of this serves as a wondrous lesson for every Jew.

    Synopsis

On the verse (in sheini of parashas Shemos), “A man from the house of Levi went and took the daughter of Levi,” Rashi says: “He had been separated from her because of Pharaoh’s decree, and he married her again. This is the meaning of ‘he went’: he followed the advice of his daughter who said to him, ‘Your decree is harsher than Pharaoh’s...’ and he took her back.” Thus, it was specifically a young girl who strengthened the bitachon of Amram’s, the “great one of the generation.” This teaches us the important role Jewish women have in influencing their husbands, as our Sages taught, “Who is a good wife – one who does the will of her husband,” meaning she creates a new will within her husband: instead of him trying to chase after a livelihood and thinking that “my strength and the might of my hand have made this wealth for me,” she shows him what it says written in the Siddur, that it is Hashem who “sustains the entire world with His goodness, with grace, with kindness, and with mercy.”

    Synopsis

The verse states (in rishon of parashas Shemos), “As they afflicted them, so they increased and spread,” meaning they increased and spread precisely as a result of being afflicted, to the extent that it says in Midrashim that the tribe of Levi, the most distinguished of all the tribes, was “few in population” “because they were not subjected to slavery in Egypt” – they were not “afflicted.” Similarly, our Sages taught, “Whoever fulfills the Torah in poverty will ultimately fulfill it in wealth.” However, it must be clarified that this is in no way a justification for the exile, because “poverty” doesn’t necessarily mean literal poverty, chas v’shalom, but simply having less than one is accustomed to. And the Torah rules as a matter of halacha that “Even if you make for them a feast like that of Shlomo in his time, you have not fulfilled your obligation toward them.” This applies even to laborers, and on weekdays. Therefore, since “He declares His words to Yaakov…,” Hashem, the Jew’s “Employer,” must fulfill all of a Jew’s requests (made during davening), even if Hashem has already given him children, life, and sustenance, because the Jew claims: The Torah says explicitly that “Even if you provide for them a feast like that of Shlomo in his time, you have still not fulfilled your obligation toward them.”

    Synopsis

On the verse (in revi’i of parashas Vayechi), “Yehudah, your brothers will acknowledge you,” the Alter Rebbe explains in Torah Or that Yehudah represents submission (“This time I will thank (odeh) Hashem”), which is revealed when “your brothers acknowledge you” as a result of the service of “your brothers” – Reuven, Shimon, and Levi: (1) Reuven represents seeing (“for she said, ‘Hashem has seen (ra’ah)’”), which leads to love of Hashem, corresponding to the first paragraph of Shema and the pillar of acts of kindness; (2) Shimon represents hearing (“Because Hashem heard (shama)”) and contemplation, which leads to fear, corresponding to the second paragraph of Shema and the pillar of service (tefillah); (3) Levi represents a connection to Hashem (“This time my husband will become attached (yilaveh) to me”) through Torah, as alluded to in the paragraph Emes veyatziv by the words “this thing.” After these three levels comes “Yehudah” – the submission and bittul of the Amidah. And the Alter Rebbe adds that the name Yehudah begins with the letter yud, which indicates constancy, because in essence, every Jew is always in a state of submission; one must only work to reveal it.

    Synopsis

The Gemara states that Rabbi Yitzchak said to Rav Nachman, “Rabbi Yochanan said as follows: “Yaakov Avinu did not die” (as Rashi cites in shishi of parashas Vayechi), to which Rav Nachman asked: “Was it for nothing that the eulogizers eulogized him, the embalmers embalmed him, and the buriers buried him?” Rabbi Yitzchak replied: “I am interpreting a verse…Yaakov is juxtaposed to his offspring: Just as his offspring is alive, he too is alive.” The novelty here is that even Yaakov’s body “did not die.” This explains why Rav Nachman isn’t bothered by the fact that Rav Yitzchak says that only Yaakov Avinu did not die, and not Avraham and Yitzchak: since only Yaakov’s “bed was complete,” it emerges that all parts of his body, including the parts embodied in his children, remained alive; therefore, it was obvious that only Yaakov, and not Avraham and Yitzchak (from whom Yishmael and Esav emerged) remained alive. Rather, the question was, if Yaakov was alive, why did they embalm him etc.? Rabbi Yitzchak replies that he is “interpreting a verse,” but how does the verse resolve the question? Rashi explains that “They (the embalmers) thought he had died,” but seemingly, if they embalmed his body, they would have seen that it was still alive? The answer is that they saw that he was alive at the time, but they believed it was impossible that all his descendants would remain alive forever; therefore, they believed that he, too, would eventually die, and they prepared for that by preserving his body. But they weren’t aware of the Navi’s promise that “his offspring is alive” forever, which means that “he too is alive” forever.

    Synopsis

We are now at the beginning of the thirty days leading up to the 10th of Shevat. As a preparation, during this period, everyone, both businesspeople and those occupied with Torah study, should increase in Torah study and in giving tzedakah. In accordance with the directive of Asei lecha rav, one should consult with their “rav,” who should determine whether one’s preparation is appropriate or whether something needs to be added or changed. It is worthwhile and proper that three times over the next thirty days – after every ten days – one should submit to a test with their “rav” to see how the preparations are going; to further bolster the matter, they should give their “rav” permission to inform me of the results of the tests.

    Synopsis

The Rambam states at the beginning of the Laws of Fasts that the purpose of a fast day is for a person to recognize that the events commemorated by the fast day are not a “chance occurrence” etc.; especially the 10th of Teves, when “the king of Bavel laid siege to Yerushalayim,” marking the beginning of the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash etc. Ultimately, these events are for the benefit of the Jewish people, to arouse them to do teshuvah and correct whatever needs to be corrected etc. – a “descent for the sake of ascent.” Therefore, it is understood that on a day like this, one should not fall into despair or sadness, chas v’shalom, over the frightening downfall that began specifically on the tenth day of the tenth month (whereas the verse states, “the tenth shall be holy”). On the contrary, a person should feel bitterness and be moved to teshuvah motivated by love, to undo the cause of the exile. This approach will strengthen one’s hope for the Redemption, at which time “I will show them wonders” – “the advantage of light from the darkness.” Especially since we have already davened Minchah and we are in a holy place etc. In addition to contemplating the reason for the fast, one should increase in Torah, service, and acts of kindness.

ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=29-12-2025

    Synopsis

The fast of Asarah B’Teves is more severe than the other fast days instituted by the Sages in that, if it were to fall on Shabbos (although according to the fixed calendar it cannot), we would fast even on Shabbos. The reason this fast day is particularly severe is because “On this very day the king of Bavel laid siege to Yerushalayim” – this marked the beginning and opening of the subsequent events that led to the other fast days. The reason the destruction did not happen all at once was to give the Jewish people time to do teshuvah, and thereby prevent the destruction from taking place. The lesson is that one should utilize the remaining time before the fast begins to do teshuvah, which has the power to bring about the true and complete Redemption literally, thus nullifying the fast. May it be Hashem’s will that the act of appointing everyone here as a shliach for the mitzvah of tzedakah should awaken within them a proper “thought of teshuvah” etc.

    Synopsis

As the Alter Rebbe explains, the reason Yaakov was able to “live in the land of Egypt” is because he had already “‘sent Yehudah ahead to Goshen’ – to establish a house of Torah study.” But even then, chas v’shalom for a Jew to think that exile is fitting place for him; rather, as long as a Jew is in exile, he cries out and pleads with Hashem to “Carry me out of Egypt!” And when Jews feel that exile is not their true place, then obviously, when Hashem grants them additional territory in Eretz Yisroel, they hold on to it with both hands and do not relinquish even an inch. Similarly, they must not chas v’shalom relinquish any territory that affects the security of the Jewish people, even if it is not part of Eretz Yisroel itself. When Jews stop being afraid of goyim and goyishkeit, and conduct themselves according to Hashem’s will, then they are given control over all of reality.

    Synopsis

Shishi of parashas Vayigash states that Hashem promised Yaakov, “…Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there.” Hashem surely fulfills this promise even while we are still in exile in Egypt, and very soon, “A great assembly they will return here,” to our Holy Land, which will be hastened by every individual giving tzedakah. Practically speaking, whoever hasn’t yet done so should promptly submit their tzedakah along with a note containing their name and mother’s name, to be placed at the Ohel. Since I won’t be reading the notes, one can write whatever they wish without being embarrassed; it is like writing to Hashem through the Nasi of our generation. The same should be done anywhere where there is a cemetery (“beis hachayim”) in which there is a tzaddik buried, because all the cemeteries are interconnected etc. And we should increase in creating “batei hachayim” (“houses of life”) for the living, for souls in bodies – houses of Torah, tefillah, and gemilus chassadim etc.
