The main point of the maamar V’kibel Hayehudim of Purim Katan 5687 (1927) is about Jewish education, “Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings You have established strength,” and “There is no strength but Torah.” The term “strength” indicates standing strong – not only to “not be ashamed before the scoffers,” as it says at the very beginning of the Shulchan Aruch – but to do so by standing strong, putting oneself in a such a place where the “scoffers” are not part of his world at all, so that he can go securely on his way with joy and gladness of heart. One can do this simply by contemplating the verse in today’s Chumash, “Then I and Your people will be distinguished from every nation [person] on the face of the earth” – where the “distinction” is in an exceptional manner, such that no “choosing” is possible between Jew and non-Jew because there is no commonality between them at all. Similarly, one attains this strength by contemplating how “every Jew has a portion in the World to Come” etc., and how every Jew is an only child of the King, King of Kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He, Who sent him to make a dwelling for Him in the lower realms – by conducting himself according to the Shulchan Aruch, and going “beyond the letter of the law,” with the guidance of the teachings Chassidus and our Rebbe’im – as explained in the aforementioned maamar.

Regarding the second Luchos, Hashem told Moshe Rabbeinu [in chamishi of Parashas Ki Sisa] to “Hew for yourself two stone Luchos etc.” – they were fashioned specifically by Moshe, unlike the first Luchos, which were fashioned by Hashem. Therefore, it is specifically the second Luchos that endure forever. This is the connection to the days of Purim, when the Torah was accepted wholeheartedly by the Jewish people of their own accord – “they confirmed what they had already accepted.” The special quality of the second Luchos is also alluded to in the conclusion of the Torah, which states, “which Moshe performed before the eyes of the entire Jewish people.” As Rashi explains, this refers to the fact that “his heart moved him to break the Luchos before their eyes...Well done for breaking them.” It was specifically through breaking the Luchos that there became an abundance of Torah in the second Luchos – a “double portion of wisdom”: breaking the Luchos caused the Jewish people to have a broken heart, “Let my soul be like dust to all,” which made them fit for the “double portion of wisdom” – “Open my heart to Your Torah.” And all this happened through Moshe – “Hew for yourself.”

We’ve discussed lately that the final moments before the coming of Moshiach require every Jew to think and speak about Moshiach’s coming, and certainly action, which is is the main thing – to do things related to the Redemption. This is connected to the order in the beginning of Parashas Ki Sisa (the census, followed by the commandment of the Kiyor, followed by the anointing oil and the Ketores): After the Jewish people are ready for the Redemption, Hashem promises to “Take lift the head of the Jewish people” with the coming of Moshiach immediately, when the Jewish people will be exalted. Consequently, immediately afterwards one must “wash” his “hands” (“doing good”) and his “feet” (“running from evil”), to remove any “dust,” anything undesirable that has accumulated throughout the exile ( “polishing of the buttons”); immediately after that, we merit the building of the Third Beis Hamikdash (“and you shall anoint with it the Tent of Meeting etc.”) and the services within it, of which the loftiest service is the offering of the ketores.

The special quality of Purim Katan, which occurs only on a leap year, is that it’s like a “rare guest,” which makes it especially dear. Therefore, we must cherish every moment of it. The theme of Purim Katan is especially emphasized after Purim Katan of the year 5687 (1927), when my father-in-law, the Rebbe, delivered the maamar V’kibel Hayehudim, in which he explains that the Jewish education of children forms the basis of the survival of the Jewish people – “From of the mouths of babies and sucklings You have established strength etc.” The novelty here is that even though “babes and sucklings” haven’t yet reached the age of understanding Torah (age five), nor even talking words of Torah (age two), nevertheless the verse emphasizes that educating the “babes and sucklings” constitutes the foundation of all Torah education (“There is no strength but Torah”). Mesiras-nefesh for Jewish education constitutes “Keeping what they have already accepted,” and this was embodied by the Rebbe himself by openly declaring the importance of Jewish education without fear of the danger etc.

On Purim Katan 5687 (1927), my father-in-law, the Rebbe, was in Moscow, the center of opposition to Yiddishkeit and Jewish education. When the Rebbe announced that he would deliver a maamar in the shul, an agent came to warn him that government spies would be present during the maamar, who would report what the Rebbe said to the authorities; therefore, the Rebbe should beware of the potential consequences... Nevertheless, the Rebbe delivered the maamar in front of a packed shul, based on the verse, “Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings You have established strength...to destroy enemy and avenger”; the Rebbe explained in unambiguous terms the need to ensure that the words emerging “from the mouths of babes” should be those that nullify and “destroy enemy and avenger.” The maamar had a tremendous impact, inspiring the listeners to give their children a proper Jewish education without fear of anything. From here we see how important it is to ensure the Jewish education of the “babes and sucklings,” which guarantees the survival of the Jewish people. In simple terms: we must educate ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren to follow the path of Torah and not to be influenced by any hardships, etc., and we should influence those with a say in the matter to see to it that when it comes to spending public money, Jewish education should be the first priority.

(1) Moshe Rabbeinu’s name is not mentioned anywhere in Parashas Tetzaveh, but his essence is openly present in the opening words V’atah tetzaveh – “And you shall command” – in a manner of “pointing with one’s finger and saying ‘This.’” (2) A lesson from the verse (in chamishi of Parashas Tetzaveh) “And the Mizbeach shall be holy of holies; whatever touches the Mizbeach will be holy”: In Divine service, the Mizbeach is the heart of every Jew – “What is the service of the heart? It is the service of tefillah” – the idea of the korbanos. And a Jew must know that since he is a Mizbeach of Hashem, he is “holy of holies” – like the kohen gadol. A Jew’s mission is that “whatever touches the Mizbeach will be holy”: that whatever a Jew comes in contact with, even by merely “touching” it with thought, speech or action, should become holy.

Today’s Rambam states: “Whenever it is suspected that a person might take a false oath, no oath is administered to him…Even if the plaintiff desires [that the defendant take this oath], we do not heed his request.” The simple reason is that because we suspect he will take a false oath, there’s no point administering one. But seemingly, since our suspicion is only a doubt, why not have him take the oath nonetheless, especially if the plaintiff wants him to take an oath? We can explain that the main reason is because of the prohibition, “Do not place a stumbling block before the blind” – to avoid causing him to stumble by taking a false oath. From this, we can learn a remarkable lesson: Even when it comes to a very lowly person, who knows how much the plaintiff needs his money, yet is still prepared to swear falsely that he doesn’t owe it – one of the most severe prohibitions in the Torah – still the Torah cares about this Jew’s spiritual state, to the point that it saves him from the risk of a false oath. The Torah “brings healing to the world,” and certainly to those Jews who are spiritually il. The Torah is engraved in every Jew’s very essence, and “Yisrael” is an acronym for “There are six hundred thousand letters in the Torah.” And especially the inner dimension of the Torah, for “the luminary with it returns him to good” – bringing a Jew back to his true place and the desire to fulfill Hashem’s will.

A leap year merges the year based on the sun (which is the same every year), and the year of the moon (which changes every day). In terms of Divine service, the “sun” represents that which doesn’t change, “You shall not add nor diminish,” while the “moon” represents the idea of “ascending in holiness.” For example, one person may have an exceptional memory he uses to “not lose a drop,” while another may excel at coming up with novel ideas, “increasing in it”; the leap year teaches that everyone can and must serve his Maker in both ways. Practically speaking: the leap year emphasizes that one should not be afraid of the fact that two opposite things are demanded of him at the same time: On the one hand, one must “not add nor diminish,” that is, one must operate within the confines and limits of the world and not nullify them, for example, by giving tzedakah in a way the pauper can accept it, and similarly, in the context of Torah study, making sure not so far in “innovating” novel ideas that he comes up with things that were “not said to Moshe from Sinai.” At the same time, one’s tzedakah and Torah learning must go beyond measure and limitation – it must be “with all your might.” And both forms of service must be performed with the same mesiras-nefesh.

The commentators explain that Moshe’s name is not mentioned in Parashas Tetzaveh, in fulfillment of Moshe’s words, “blot me out of Your book.” Really, the words V’atah Tetzaveh (“And you shall command”) signify Moshe’s essence that transcends any name. Thus, Moshe’s words were fulfilled in the best possible manner. The lesson: every Jew has a “Moshe Rabbeinu” within, and one must reveal the level of “you,” one’s very core, which is one with the Divine Essence, the true “You” etc. This leads immediately to the fulfillment of the next part of the verse, “and they shall take to you pure olive oil,” the lighting of the Menorah in the Third Beis Hamikdash, when we will see Moshe and Aharon physically, with the true and complete Redemption, literally right now.

A lesson from 7 Adar (the yahrzeit of Moshe Rabbeinu): There are various ways a Jew can connect to the Torah. For example, a Jew serving in the role of “Zevulun” can partner with a Jew serving the role of “Yissachar” etc. However, although one properly “serves his Maker” in this fashion and we can’t demand more from him – as a practical matter he will not “find” success in Torah this way. The only way to “find” success (like a “found object,” which is not proportional to the effort invested in finding it) is to toil in Torah. On 7 Adar, when the role of Moshe Rabbeinu is expressed with fervor – and his role was Torah – we are inspired to toil in Torah study, and by toiling – “you will find.” Among the “ways by which the Torah is acquired” are “companionship with one’s contemporaries and debating with one’s students,” meaning, influencing others to likewise study Torah and toil in Torah with fervor.
