    Synopsis

The Gemara in Kesubos (10b) explains the function of the Mizbeach [whose construction is commanded in shishi of Parashas Terumah] with an acronym: Maziach (it removes decrees), Mazin (it [provides sustenance), Mechabev (it endears the Jewish people to Hashem), and Mechaper (it atones for sins). Seemingly, the order should have been the opposite: first comes atonement for sins, which endears the Jewish people to Hashem, which enables a person to ask for sustenance (for the present) and removal of decrees (for the future). But the Gemara teaches that first comes the removal of decrees, even before the sins are atoned for. Then comes sustenance, in accordance with man’s physical desires (because before his sins are atoned for, that is what he desires); then comes “endearment” (spiritual blessing), and then atonement of sins!

    Synopsis

The maamar Basi L’gani [5710] explains that the Mishkan was made of shitim wood [as it says in revi’i if Parashas Terumah] because shitim means “bending away” from the middle path; either in a negative way – folly (“shtus”) of le’umas zeh, or in a positive way – folly of holiness. The service of the Mishkan was to transform the folly of le’umas zeh to folly of holiness. This is also why the beams are called kerashim – because they transform the sheker (falsehood) of the world, and attach it (mekasher) to G-dliness. In Os 9 of the maamar he explains that this is also why the kerashim were “standing” (omdim) – like “pillars” (amudim) that connect the roof and the floor to be literally one”; he adds that this is “similar to the function of mitzvos, which are called pillars because they draw down and connect the Or Ein Sof literally to the worlds.” Thus, the kerashim are similar to mitzvos in that they connect, but not exactly the same because the mitzvos “draw down” as well as connect etc. We can explain this based on what he writes earlier in the maamar, that the service of the kerashim is man’s service with his Divine soul, with which he transforms the folly of the animal soul; as compared to the service with the physicality of this world, this is considered a spiritual service. But to draw down the Divine Essence and Being, the “highest height”, and connect it to the worlds, one needs the practical mitzvos specifically, which are enclothed in the physicality of the world, “the lowest low.” (But this comes after the service of the kerashim, that is, performing the mitzvos spiritually through man, which connects the Or Ein Sof to the words, and then, by fulfilling them physically, one draws down the Divine Essence and Being and attaches it to the worlds etc.)

Two excerpts from Maamar Basi L’Gani, Yud Shevat 5719.

    Synopsis

In the Mishkan there were two general aspects [as described in Parashas Terumah]: (1) The curtains and beams, which encompassed all parts of the Mishkan equally and without distinction. (2) The various vessels inside the Mishkan, each with its unique function, such as the Aron for the Luchos, the Menorah for illumination, etc. Similarly, this applies to the personal Mishkan within every Jew (“‘I will dwell among them’ – within every single Jew”): (1) Tefillah, where a person stands nullified as a servant before his master, and where this nullification applies equally to all his limbs; similarly, in Torah (“‘Wall’ – this refers to Torah”) no matter what part of Torah one learns, it’s the same mitzvah of Torah study with the same brachah. 2) The practical Mitzvos, divided into 248 positive mitzvos and 365 negative mitzvos to the 248 limbs and 365 sinews.

    Synopsis

The Midrash states, “Gold was created only for the sake of the Beis Hamikdash.” Meaning, the can function without gold (or other luxuries), and the only reason it was created was for the Beis Hamikdash. Just as one doesn’t decorate a barn the way he decorates his own house, it is obvious that when building a house for Hashem – a Mishkan or Mikdash or shul or beis midrash – the building must reflect the special importance it has to us. Therefore, if we suffice with silver and copper for our homes, we must use gold for Hashem’s home. This is why Hashem provides ample sustenance: so that a person can use his intellect and free choice to use the abundance Hashem gives him, not for materialistic things but for spiritual things – to give tzedakah or build shuls and batei midrash generously.

    Synopsis

The construction of the first Beis Hamikdash, the first permanent dwelling place for Hashem within the materiality of the world, had an eternal effect for all generations, opening the way for all subsequent Sanctuaries, and through its “narrow and broad windows,” empowering every Jew in every generation to turn his own home into a Sanctuary – “‘And I will dwell among them’ – within every single Jew” [as it says in the first aliyah of Parashas Terumah]. We see this openly in the context of Jewish education: everything one does in educating a Jewish child is not merely a personal event occurring here and now, but one that lasts for the child’s entire life, and affecting how he educates his own children, who will educate their children after them in the proper way until the end of all generations! As my father-in-law the Rebbe said, one must view every Jew the way they exist within the primordial thought of the level of Adam Kadmon! The way a child eats, drinks, and makes a brachah matters on that very lofty level! Therefore, anyone involved in educating that child has a portion in something that affects the level of the primordial thought of Adam Kadmon! If so, even if Jewish education requires tremendous effort and toil – how can that even be a factor, considering the tremendous effect it will have?!

    Synopsis

    (1) This year, the two months of Adar total sixty days (counting the first day of Rosh Chodesh Adar I), which emphasizes the quality of transformation: the law is that when something is “nullified by sixty parts,” it is not only nullified, but transformed, with the entire dish becoming permissible to eat, with the food gaining a special quality. Similarly, when there are sixty days of Adar, everything undesirable is not only nullified, but transformed. Another aspect of a leap year is that there is Purim “Gadol” (“Major”) and Purim “Katan” (“Minor”). In terms of Divine service: in addition to serving Hashem in a manner of “Gadol,” one must also serve Hashem by being “Katan” – “May my soul be like dust to all” – self-nullification. (2) The commandment, “And they shall make a Sanctuary for Me…” at the beginning of Parashas Terumah also includes the command to build the Beis Hamikdash in all times.

    Synopsis

There are those who argue [regarding Mivtza’im etc.]: How can you turn the Torah into a book of medicine and the like? How can you say that when the Torah says [at the end of shishi of Parashas Mishpatim] that if the Jewish people keep Torah and mitzvos, “I will remove illness from among you,” it means in the literal sense? After all, what connection is there between keeping Torah and mitzvos, and health? Similarly, [they question] how it’s possible to say that the world was literally created in six days, and instead they argue that the Torah means “six eras” etc. One must know that “a verse does not depart from its plain meaning” (except in those places where the Torah says something is meant allegorically etc.). We know the harsh things the Rambam and the Rashba wrote regarding those who argued that the Torah wasn’t meant to be taken literally. Similarly, the Zohar speaks very harshly of those who say that verses in the Torah like, “And Lotan’s sister was Timna” are just “stories” Rachmana litzlan. The same applies here: The Torah is not a book of medicine, but at the same time, when it says that keeping Torah and mitzvos brings healing – “I will remove illness from your midst” – it is true in the literal sense!

    Synopsis

[Continued.] If I could, I would introduce both of these things: That all educational institutions should teach the foundations of Judaism to all children, from the youngest age to the oldest age. And similarly, that practical halacha for day-to-day life should be studied, so that afterwards the students can be built up to become Torah scholars etc. In in this way the Jewish people will have halachic authorities who know how to rule properly on practical matters. To those who argue the need to raise great Torah geniuses and leaders etc. – the verse states (as it says in the Yerushalmi), “And the Jewish people forgot its Maker and built temples”: it’s possible to build up grand institutions and yet “forget his Maker.” What is the benefit of Torah genius, when there aren’t simple Jews who appreciate plainly the value of Torah and mitzvos? It’s a building set on false foundations. Rather, the building must begin from the bottom up, starting with simple things – teaching children the Thirteen Principles of Faith etc., and then advancing to the study of Gemara, until eventually they will become great scholars etc.

    Synopsis

(Continued.) My point in the abovementioned is to rouse those who have the power to change the situation. The idea that the first priority is to teach children the principles and foundations of Judaism, appears in the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch (and every sefer begins with an Alef – which alludes to a Jew’s behavior in such a way that connects him to Hashem etc.). And this is not only the role of kindergarten teachers, but all teachers, including those of the higher grades in the yeshivos. The time of teachers deluding themselves has passed. Relatedly: even when Torah is studied “to make the Torah great and glorious,” they can choose topics involving practical halacha. But in practice, the study of halacha has been greatly neglected – people don’t even know what it says in the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch. Instead, the emphasis is on pilpul etc., but when it comes to giving a practical ruling in the laws of Shabbos, taharas hamishpachah, kashrus, etc. – they don’t know the law and come to err etc.; today, this happens even with great scholars. Synopsis

[Continued.] These days, when most of the youth spend most of their time occupied in things other than Torah and mitzvos – it should be obvious to those in charge of educating them, that of those few hours they have for Jewish education within the four cubits of Torah – every moment must be used to build up the foundations of Judaism. But in practice, they continue focusing on lofty concepts, while the students lack the foundations! Parents entrust a child to the teachers to build the child into a Jew from the foundation up; that’s their job. And this is impossible without first teaching children what Judaism is and making sure that they actually perform the practical mitzvos. The children want to do what they must, but they don’t know what it is. A teacher or principal who doesn’t concern himself with making sure the children say Modeh Ani, wash their hands, say the blessings on the Torah before studying, and daven Mincha and Maariv after studying – the guilt lies on him. If the teacher protests that by the rules, the child ought to arrive in his class only after being taught the foundations – that’s a discussion to be had with the other teachers, but it’s not the child’s fault; the child’s complaint to him is that you should use those few hours to see make sure the child’s soul has a connection to Hashem.
