    Synopsis

[Continued.] The conduct of the baal hahilula was like that of Avraham Avinu. He wasn’t looking for mesiras-nefesh; his goal was to “call there in the name of Hashem, Keil olam,” and to spread Torah and mitzvos, and in that pursuit he was deterred by nothing, even it required mesiras-nefesh. Therefore, he didn’t get into analyzing whether mesiras-nefesh was required by law or not, just as Nachshon was not deterred by the different factions among the Jewish people; he knew just one thing – that the Jewish people had to advance toward Har Sinai. And if there was a sea in the middle, he jumped into the sea! And without knowing what would happen after jumping into the sea. It was precisely this approach that caused the sea to split, along with all the waters in the world, which caused dread and fear to fall upon the land of Canaan. This is the lesson for us: Our work is that “I was created to serve my Creator;” to “love the creatures and draw them close to Torah,” and to prepare them for the future Redemption, without being deterred by other factions among the Jewish people or what they’re saying, nor by any concealments or challenges. Everyone must consider himself like Nachshon and “jump into the sea” with mesiras-nefesh, and go personally to Har Sinai – then, the rest of the Jewish people will follow to the true and complete Redemption!

    Synopsis

The daily Chumash for Monday of Parashas Beshalach discusses the state of the Jewish people before Nachshon ben Aminadav jumped into the sea, causing it to split. There were four groups among the Jewish people, most of whom did not advocate for jumping into the sea. Moreover, even based on Torah law, there was room to debate whether Nachshon, as a Ben Noach, was obligated to risk his life (and consequently whether he was allowed to risk his life) in this fashion. Nevertheless, Nachshon jumped into the sea, because he knew that Hashem had commanded, “When you take this people out of Egypt, you shall serve G-d upon this mountain,” and that accordingly, they had to continue advance to receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai, even if there was a sea in the middle of the way! This is a lesson for all generations, and for the work of the baal haheilula, who personally conducted himself with mesiras nefesh, and who from the very beginning of his leadership demanded the same from others – even though we find no law in the Shulchan Aruch that one must demand this sort of mesiras nefesh from others. It can be likened the fact that it’s a mitzvah to listen to a provisional ruling of a prophet to transgress a mitzvah in the Torah. (And we see that the Rebbe’im were asked about material matters, something that is the purview of “actual prophets...like Shmuel the Seer.”) [To be continued].

    Synopsis

The special quality of the eleventh day of the eleventh month: The eleventh day signifies a level of G-dliness that transcends the measure and limitation of the world (which was created with ten utterances), but as this level comes down within the measure and limitation of the world (i.e., a specific day). In addition to it being the eleventh month (which is connected to course of the moon, which receives), it is also the eleventh day, which has to do with the sun, which gives: A Jew must be a giver, bringing this level to the entire world, including the level of “my Creator” (“I was created to serve my Creator”) – Hashem as He is revealed in the ten Sefiros of Atzilus, but there is also a higher level – “Eleven days from Chorev etc.” The verse states, “It came to pass, when Pharaoh let the people go;” Pharaoh connotes “the uncovering of all the lights” – Hashem sends out and assists every Jew to leave the confines of Egypt and come to the good and spacious Land. Included in this is that already now, Eretz Yisrael remains whole; together with the whole Torah and the whole Jewish people, this forms the “threefold cord that is not quickly broken.”

    Synopsis

[Continuation.] The general difference between the three aforementioned periods in the leadership of my father-in-law, the Rebbe is as follows: The first period was a time of actual mesiras nefesh, and moreover, a far more difficult mesiras nefesh – that of instructing another Jew to give up his life…and even when the person before him had been caught and exiled. In the second period, the unique challenge was that “his brothers envied him” (and now is not the time to elaborate), yet still he continued to spread Judaism in the knowledge that this was his mission, “and his father awaited the matter.” In the third period, he came to the United States, in the “bottom hemisphere;” immediately upon his arrival he declared that “America is no different” from the “old home” in the “top hemisphere.” This involved the particular challenge of changing customs and habits acquired over many decades in the United States. The common denominator between all three periods was his mesiras nefesh! Generally, even if someone has mesiras nefesh in one context, it doesn’t mean he’ll succeed at having mesiras nefesh in another. However, when a person’s whole identity is mesiras nefesh – he has mesiras nefesh of every kind and in every circumstance. And once he paved the way, everyone can follow this path and walk securely on his way.

    Synopsis

On a yom haheilula, “all his labor” that a tzaddik “toiled during his entire lifetime” ascends and has its effect etc. Obviously, however, to the tzaddik’s students, the main thing is the years during which he was the nasi. My father-in-law, the Rebbe, was nasi for three decades – 5680-5710 (1920-1950), which represent three periods. Everyone, no matter what “period” he is in, can derive a lesson for “walking in his ways”: In the first period – from 5680-5690 (1920-1930) – he worked in “that country,” which involved risking his life; even after he left from “there” (in 1927), he hadn’t fully “left” until he established a new fixed place in 5690 (1930). (And before that, he visited the Holy Land and the United States, (primarily) to “scout the land” and decide where to establish his new place). In the second period 5690-5700 (1930-1940) – he lived primarily in Poland (his stay in Riga was viewed as temporary, to prepare for his move to Poland). The third period – 5700-5710 (1940-1950) was in the United States. [To be continued.]

    Synopsis

Even while still in Egypt, the Jewish people experienced a state of freedom and triumph (“and they went out triumphantly”); therefore, when Moshe Rabbeinu spoke with Pharaoh, though he knew that Pharaoh was the king and that he had to show him respect (to the point that when he left after speaking with Pharaoh, it was “with burning anger,” as it says in revi’i of Parashas Bo; see Rashi) – he still demanded forcefully that “Hashem, the G-d of the Hebrews, sent me to you”, “Send out My people so that they may serve Me” – and it worked! The lesson is: Even when we are still in exile, “all kingdoms are called by the name Egypt,” and “the law of the land is the law” – nevertheless, when it comes to anything related to Yiddishkeit, such as the borders of Eretz Yisrael, when one talks to a non-Jew, he must begin by saying forcefully and with Jewish pride that “Hashem, the G-d of the Hebrews, sent me to you,” and the reason is “that they may serve Me”. It is precisely this approach that succeeds! [As opposed to the approach of “hopping between the two ideas.” As we see, Eliyahu Hanavi didn’t address those who unambiguously served the Baal, rather, he spoke to shoe who hopped back and forth, “Until when are you hopping between two ideas”! (The plain reason is because those who hop between the two ideas convince themselves that they aren’t really sinners, and therefore they don’t feel regret.)

    Synopsis

(The second aliyah of Parashas Bo states:) “but for the entire Jewish people there was light in their dwellings.” Rashi explains that “the Jewish people searched and saw their belongings. When they were leaving and asked for them, and [the Egyptians] said, ‘We have nothing,’ [the Jew] would say to him, ‘I saw it in your house…’ The lesson is: Hashem performed this miracle, of providing light for the Jewish people, even in the midst of “tangible darkness” in Egypt, so that the Jewish people would be able to see the sparks of holiness contained in the Egyptians’ houses and property to fulfill the command, “and you shall empty out Egypt” of its sparks of holiness. By Divine providence, every Jew entered the correct house which contained the gold and silver utensils containing the sparks of holiness designated for him to elevate. Similarly, in the present era, “As in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt, I will show him wonders:” When one relies on Hashem, he has the “light” so that even when he must enter an Egyptian’s house and deal with an Egyptian’s belongings etc., he can utilize it to fulfill a command of Hashem.

    Synopsis

[In connection with the Exodus from Egypt in Parashas Bo:] The Aseres Hadibros begin with “I am Hashem your G-d Who took you out of the land of Egypt.” Likewise, many mitzvos serve as “a reminder of the Exodus from Egypt.” It is because the completeness of all mitzvos depends on the Exodus from Egypt: in order for one’s Torah study and performance of mitzvos to be done properly, without ulterior motives, and solely to fulfill Hashem’s will (so that one will learn even what he doesn’t want to, and keep the mitzvos that don’t make sense to him), one must first break free of all constraints and boundaries. This is what Chassidus demands, and this is the Aleph-Beis of Chassidus: kabbolas ol and mesira-nefesh – the exodus from all constraints and boundaries – are the “beginning (not the end) of Divine service, and its foundation and root”

    1) Entering into the week of the yom haheilula opens a new level of service that is required during this week. 2) The baal haheilula did his work specifically with joy, despite his physical suffering – which affected him spiritually as well – the inability to say and spread Chassidus etc. Like his doctor said : how can it be that his suffering consisted specifically of something affecting his speech, preventing him from carrying out his mission as he would have wanted? This is a valid argument according to Torah! 3) A practical takeaway: to increase in studying his teachings, in a way that compensates for what he was unable to do (because he had no “Aharon your brother” to serve as his speaker), and to arrange farbrengens for the yom haheilula as well as on the Shabbos before and after it – and the main thing is, despite the suffering of exile – to do it with joy.

About The Daily Sicha - השיחה היומית

From the publisher's feed

"The Daily Sicha" is a daily discourse of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. The Sichos for Sicha Yomis are chosen from throughout the thousands of hours of the Rebbe's talks, based on their appropriateness toward each day.
