Though the 15th of Shevat is the Rosh Hashanah for trees, our emphasis from the day is on mankind, in accordance with the verse, “For man is a tree of the field” – a Torah scholar is compared to a tree, and “What are fruits – mitzvos.” Similarly, the verse, “Those who come, whom Yaakov caused to take root, Israel flourished and blossomed and they filled the face of the world with fruitage” teaches us the growth that results from exile etc. Seemingly, plant life can’t compare to the quality of animal life and human beings? Nevertheless, we highlight the quality of plant life because plants has an advantage that even animals and humans don’t have: a plant is constantly connected to its source, the ground. That’s the only way it can grow and produce fruits etc. In terms of Divine service: our service in this physical world is that of the emotive attributes (“the goal of Chassidus is to change the nature of one’s emotive attributes,” and this is also the service of the Patriarchs) – the level of plant life. Simply put, the guarantee for success in one’s Divine service is when he knows that “man is a tree of the field,” i.e., constantly connected to his roots – from the giving of the Torah, and all the way back to the Patriarchs. That is what gives a Jew the strength to “flourish and blossom” etc.

Today’s Rambam, in the first chapter of Hilchos Mechira, discusses how property is acquired: “How is an acquisition made? Land is acquired in one of three ways: through money, through a document, or through chazakah.” In man’s Divine service, a “sale” is the act of transferring something from the realm of the mundane to the realm of holiness – making it a dwelling for Hashem. This is done through one of the three modes of acquisition – money, a document, and chazakah, correspond to Torah, Avodah, and Gemilus Chassadim, i.e., right, left and middle, or Chesded, Gevurah and Tiferes etc. These three modes similarly apply to Hashem’s betrothal of the Jewish people, through money, a document, or relations. (However, an acquisition of property is something external, while betrothal is something internal. Similarly, Divine service begins on an external level, and then continues with the inner service, until eventually “they become one flesh”). The Rambam continues that “If one sold a house or a field, when [the buyer] locks it up or encloses a portion of it, or breaks through a portion [of its existing walls] – provided that the act brings him benefit – he has acquired it etc.” Thus, when we “acquire” physical matters for Hashem, it must be done in a manner that brings benefit, and where our improvement to it is visible.

Although there are different variations in the nusach of davening, and “each river has its course,” in light of current situation in the world, which has been getting more shocking from day to day, with “nations clashing with one another,” it is fitting to increase in our divine service, especially in regard to davening. Therefore, it is my request that every Jew, even those who haven’t done so until now, should add to their davening – before and after – passages that are especially relevant to the current situation: 1) Before davening: “I hereby accept upon myself the positive commandment to ‘Love your fellow like yourself” (the AriZal mentions this practice, and the Alter Rebbe includes it in his siddur), which emphasizes Ahavas Yisroel – peace and unity among the Jewish people, which brings peace to the entire world. 2) After davening: the pasuk “Ach tzadikim yodu lishmecha, yeshvu yesharim es Panecha” (“Indeed, the righteous will give thanks to Your name; the upright will dwell in Your presence”) (this practice is cited in the Rambam and elsewhere, and is brought in a number of siddurim), which emphasizes tranquility in general – the opposite of “kingdoms clashing with one another” etc.

Our Sages said regarding Moshe and Aharon, “Usually Moshe is mentioned before Aharon, but in one place [in the second aliyah of Parashas Va’eira], it says, ‘They are Aharon and Moshe.’ This teaches that they were equal.” Moshe’s mode of service was from above to below, drawing down the light of Torah from above. Therefore, the physical blessing that came through Moshe were also in the form of light. Bit Aharon’s mode of service was from below to above – elevating the Jewish people and thus refining physicality. Regarding this the Sages said that “they were equal.” In terms of Divine service: sometimes it’s possible to accomplish more by spreading forth light and Torah, and sometimes it’s possible to accomplish more by speaking about the need to refine and elevate physicality. But even Aharon’s quality, which is equal to Moshe – is revealed in Torah (i.e., in the words “they are Aharon and Moshe”), which is Moshe’s quality. The lesson is that in all times and all places, the beginning must be to bestow abundant light, and afterwards the light will dispel the darkness. This is the way of Chassidus in spreading the wellsprings to the outside.

Today’s Rambam states: “A student who was exiled to a city of refuge, his teacher is exiled with him, as the verse states, ‘and he shall live’ – do for him so that he shall live. The life of those who possess wisdom and those who seek, without Torah study, is considered like death.” The lesson is: exile in general (“because of our sins, we were exiled from our land”) is similar to exile in a city of refuge. We must know that “All your children are students of Hashem” – every Jew (even an “unworthy student is) a student of Hashem, and therefore, when a Jew is in exile, “his teacher is exiled with him.” Hashem is with us in exile! As the Sages taught, “Wherever they were exiled, the Divine Presence went with them.” The reason the expression used is “his teacher is exiled with him,” is because the teacher must not only be in the city of refuge but must also be there in a state of exile (“the Divine Presence in exile”), as it is written, “In all their pain, He is pained.” Since that is the case, it is certain that even in exile, “Hashem is your Guardian, Hashem is your shadow.” But we must utilize this time to properly be “those who possess wisdom and those who seek it” – constantly striving without rest to reach higher levels of Torah learning, which strengthens our bond with Hashem.

The Alter Rebbe is the founder of Chassidus Chabad and the author of the Tanya, which is for every Jew, as the Alter Rebbe said – that ultimately, Chassidus will be studied by all Jews, as has indeed become the case in recent years. The Alter Rebbe writes that on the yom histalkus of a tzaddik, the totality of all the tzaddik’s deeds in this world shine etc., and this also applies to the Alter Rebbe himself. Therefore, on the Alter Rebbe’s yartzeit, we must take a lesson for Divine service, and one which will lead to practical results: There are those who have been chosen as shluchim, and certainly, each of them is doing everything in their power to fulfill the mission properly. However, sometimes the "klugenker" (“smart-aleck,” i.e., the evil inclination) comes and tries to distract a shliach with other things, such as matters pertaining to Eretz Yisrael etc.; these may be very important issues – but they aren’t the individual shlichus to which this person was appointed and in which he has been successful. The shliach must know that his shlichus is in a particular place, and that is what he must occupy himself with. When he responds this way, it is almost certain that they will stop distracting him with such proposals.

The Alter Rebbe’s name, Shneur (“Shnei Or” combined into one word) indicates that the Alter Rebbe combined both lights – the light of Nigleh and the light of Nistar – as one. This is also what the Alter Rebbe demands from Chassidim: to study Chassidus, but also to study Nigleh in no less measure. Since this is what is demanded of us, that means we are given the abilities necessary to do it, and failure to utilize those abilities constitutes “injury to someone else,” in which case one is “liable” – and especially considering that the “someone else” in this case is the Nasi Hador! When the Alter Rebbe arrived in a city, he would first engage the local Jews in Nigleh, and after he impressed them that way, he would engage them in Chassidus, drawing them near and turning them around completely. This is also a lesson for us: the means for spreading the wellsprings to the outside is a vast knowledge of Nigleh. To use the expression of my father-in-law, the Rebbe: the Rebbe’im turned us into “shooters,” and the “bullet” we shoot is Nigleh – through which we draw Jews near to Chassidus.

A leader of a community, or of a few, or even of his own family – must do everything with vitality and joy and similarly influence his entire surrounding in accordance with his capabilities, because “A wealthy person who brings a poor person’s offering has not fulfilled his obligation” at all. Especially if one wants to be appointed to a higher position of leadership – he must show a living example of how he serves as a “head” currently. As the Midrash says about Moshe Rabbeinu and Dovid Hamelech, who were chosen as shepherds of the Jewish people because of how their conduct in earlier years as shepherds of sheep. For example: a rosh yeshiva of a small class who wants to be appointed to a larger class must demonstrate that he fulfills his current role to the utmost extent, and show that he cares for his students’ well-being and engages with them on their level etc. And he must certainly be careful not to cause anyone pain by giving rebuke etc.; rather, he must do everything with vitality and joy and an approach of positivity. As one advances, more is expected of him – and he is given greater resources for it.

1) On the verse (in shelishi of Parashas Shemos) “And Moshe consented,” the Midrash states that Moshe swore to Yisro not to leave Midian, and therefore, when Hashem sent him to Egypt, Moshe had to return to his father-in-law to annul the oath, etc. It then goes on to say that one can take a binding oath by association with Moshe’s oath; the Rogatchover asks how that is possible, being that Moshe’s oath was annulled?! He answers that since Moshe’s oat is written in the Torah, in an eternal verse, one can use it to make an oath by association! Certainly, then, this shows that all the stories written in the Torah about Moshe – even those that precede the giving of the Torah, including the story of his self-sacrifice for the Jew he saw being struck by the Egyptian – all serve as an eternal lesson for us! 2) In connection with the yom haheilula of the Alter Rebbe, it is fitting for everyone to undertake to study the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, which unfortunately is something that has been overlooked.

For a Jew to behave according to the Torah is not a question of what’s convenient; rather, Torah is a Jew’s very life, as the Gemara says, “Just as fish in the sea die as soon as they come out onto dry land, so too, when people depart from the words of the Torah and from the mitzvos, they immediately die.” This is the reason for the Rambam's ruling that “we force him until he says, ‘I want to’” – because when he is forced to do what the Torah requires, it is revealed that his true identity is a Jew who wishes to fulfill Hashem’s will. However, due to the darkness of the exile and being surround by gentiles, a Jew may become covered in “dust,” and being to feel inferior to those around him, and to feel ashamed of his Judaism, to the point that his envy of the gentile way of life “removes him from the world” and he wants to act like them – even though that way of life goes against his very life. These days, after three and a half thousand years of Jewish history, we no longer need not take it on faith that the existence of the Jewish people depends solely on their adherence to the Torah; rather, it has been clearly proven that only those Jews in history who held onto the “golden thread” and followed a Jewish way of life raised children and grandchildren who remain faithful to the Torah and the Jewish people, in contrast to those who looked for other ways of life, who, within a few generations, were absorbed among the nations, Rachmana litzlan.
