1) A lesson from Tuesday when “‘it was good’ was said twice” – “good for Heaven and good for people”. 2) Lessons from shelishi of Parashas Vayigash: a) When Yosef was sent to Egypt, it was “to preserve life that Hashem sent me before you”: those who received a Jewish education in the past must provide “food” today to those Jewish children who still “hunger” for spiritual sustenance. b) When Yaakov “saw the wagons Yosef had sent to carry him, the spirit of their father Yaakov was revived” (the wagons were a sign that Yosef still remembered what he had been learning with his father twenty-two years earlier): You must study Torah with such enthusiasm and force that when you are asked decades in the future what you learned on Zos Chanukah 5745, you will remember it! And in this way, “‘the spirit of their father Yaakov is revived’: Yaakov Avinu, the way he is in Gan Eden, hears that a Jewish child in exile, in Egypt, when decades have passed, and he remembers the Torah he learned decades earlier – this gives life, more life, to Yaakov Avinu in Gan Eden, and this causes Hashem to bestow all the brachos and success to those who study Torah in this fashion…”!

The Rambam writes, “It is a positive mitzvah to daven every day”; the commentaries explain that this applies only when one davens to Hashem to provide his needs that he lacks. Accordingly, it is possible according to Nigleh for a person to “daven all day long” and yet never perform the biblical mitzvah of davening – if he doesn’t feel he lacks anything! Similarly, there’s a discussion as to whether the mitzvah of Kerias Shema is a biblical obligation etc. But by studying Chassidus, which explains the path of contemplating Hashem’s greatness and the lowliness of man, to the point that one truly feels he is terribly lacking – then his davening has the force of the biblical mitzvah of davening for his needs! And so, too, regarding Kerias Shema: when one prefaces his Kerias Shema with the brachos of Kerias Shema as explained according to Chassidus – “who chooses his people Yisrael with love” etc. – and reaches the level of being “in the King’s palace” (where “one who gestures in the presence of the king etc.”) – he is biblically obligated to have mesiras-nefesh for Hashem’s oneness and to love Him “with all your heart and all your soul and all your might”! Thus, we see how it is imperative according to Shulchan Aruch to study Chassidus – because it is through studying Chassidus that one turns his davening and Kerias Shema from a rabbinic obligation to a biblical obligation every day, according to all opinions.

In one of his letters pertaining to the claims made against Chassidim by their opponents, the Alter Rebbe writes, “I gave joy into my heart from the time that I heard that they [the opponents] are sputtering with great lies etc.” Though their claims were completely unfounded, however, since “one is not suspected of something unless he has…” there must be some deeper basis for it (for example, their claim that the Alter Rebbe wanted to be king of the Jewish people was completely untrue, but still was a reflection of the Alter Rebbe’s wondrous union with the sefirah of Malchus etc.). Similarly: when we hear that a claim is made that Chabad Chassidim aren’t active – we must know that this claim has no basis; Chassidim have been spreading the wellsprings and accomplishing entire worlds! But at the same time, the very fact that such a claim is made serves as a directive for one’s service: however much one may have accomplished, it can be considered as though he wasn’t active, because he could have done more – and therefore he must now increase his activities many times over. This is why we have been campaigning lately to increase even more in all activities and all aspects of Yiddishkeit, for children as well as the elderly, and everyone in between etc.

One of the general lessons from Chanukah is to add another candle every day, meaning, to advance in holiness – that every day one must add incomparable more, in an unlimited fashion, compared to the previous day’s work (because there are different levels within “unlimited” as well). The true test as to whether one has internalized this lesson is that after Chanukah, when there’s no command to do so, one nevertheless continues the approach of continuously adding from day to day on his own, and in a way that is expressed practically. This is similar to the explanation of the greatness of hakafos – precisely because it’s a custom and not an obligation: similarly, we can understand the great quality of continuing to follow the approach of Chanukah specifically after Chanukah is over.

After a day like Shabbos or Yom Tov ends, we long for it until it comes around again; this longing is supposed to inspire a person to do things that reflect the special day for which he longs. As we find regarding Melaveh Malkah on Motza’ei Shabbos, Isru Chag after Yom Tov, and the Purim se’udah which continues after nightfall when Purim is already over. However, Chanukah has no Isru Chag or se’udah continuing after Chanukah ends; how then does one quench his longing for Chanukah? The answer is by studying Torah topics related to Chanukah! Like we say regarding korbanos, “we will render for bulls the offering of our lips” – by studying the halachos of the korbanos, one is considered to have brought a korban – even if he’s not a kohen, even if he’s outside of Eretz Yisrael, and even if it’s after the Beis Hamkdash is destroyed – because Torah transcends time and space.

1. The deliverance of “wanton sinners into the hands of those who toil in Your Torah” is a miracle just like the deliverance of “the many into the hands of the few” – because unlike “wanton sinners,” “those who toil in your Torah” aren’t solders with knowledge of weaponry etc. 2. Some argue: what difference does it make if the oil is pure or impure, when the light is the same?! The whole miracle of Chanukah was that the pure oil was sealed (not by democratic vote etc.) but with the seal of the Kohen Gadol – only in this way can the Menorah, the Beis Hamikdash, and entire Jewish people be pure, and these are the kind of candles that “never cease”! 3. Chanukah celebrates the victory of the Greeks, who emphasized the body over the soul. One of their customs was to light a torch at a certain place, and run it from there to another place etc.; now, this custom has been copied in Eretz Yisrael on Chanukah! They lit a torch in Modi’in, where the whole war of Matisyahu and his sons began against the Greeks, and they ran with it to Yerushalayim the Holy City! This is the exact opposite of the theme of Chanukah, which is to not to be affected by the darkness of the world but rather to increase light – the candle of a mitzvah and light of Torah – and specifically “after sunset”!

Not only the emotions in the heart, but also intellect, must be connected to the source of truth and goodness, which is Hashem. Because when the source of intellect is not in holiness, one cannot rely that the intellect itself will be an appropriate guide, as we see in the case of Greek wisdom: although it was considered close to the realm of holiness, the Greeks are nonetheless referred to as “impure,” “wicked,” and “wanton sinners,” and as we know, they were particularly corrupt and inhumane ways. The reason is because even if something accords with the principles of logic and reason etc., those principles established by man himself. Therefore, the intellect must be based in the Torah of Truth. And this is the theme of Chanukah – the Jewish people were saved from Greek wisdom, which posed the danger of becoming “impure” etc. And this is also the meaning of our Sages’ statement, “‘Light’ refers to Torah”: Torah is not just intellect and wisdom, rather, it is a hora’ah (instruction) to guide a person to true life.

Regarding the miracle of the oil on Chanukah, the question is asked: why did they need a miracle to light the Menorah with pure oil, if the Menorah is a community service, and “impurity is overridden for the public”? (The answer is given that since it was a new Menorah, it’s initiation as a service vessel would be by lighting it; since we don’t find that impurity is overridden in the case of service vessel not yet initiated, the Menorah would have become impure once the impure oil was poured into it. But this answer isn’t sufficient, because in any event they made the Menorah of wood in order that it wouldn’t be susceptible to impurity etc.) The answer is that even though they legally could have dedicated the Beis Hamikdash and the Menorah etc. in a state of impurity, nevertheless, Hashem performed a miracle to enable them to do it purity, to show His love for the Jewish people etc. The lesson is: during the exile, the love of the Jewish people is expressed by having mesiras-nefesh even for a minor detail of Yiddishkeit; even when it’s possible to find a permissible way to do something in “impurity”, we decline to do so, in order to not be disconnected from Hashem chas v’shalom. And when we conduct ourselves this way, even if we are the few and weak against the many and the mighty – we succeed.

Chassidus explains the difference between the Menorah in the Beis Hamikdash, which was lit during the day, and the Chanukah candles which are lit specifically “after sunset” – because the unique quality of the Chanukah candles is that they have the ability to light up the darkness and transform it to light – “Hashem lights my darkness” – even when it’s still exile. And this is the preparation for the fulfillment of the promise that “night will light up like day,” with the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu. And this is the connection to the parashah of the week – Vayehi mikeitz shnasayim yamim, based on the AriZal’s explanation that this refers to the keitz hayamin (“the end of days”) – “arise to your lot at the end of days” – the coming of Moshiach. And since we are in the final moments of exile, we will immediately have the end of days.

Chanukah and Yud Tes Kislev are associated with spreading the inner dimension of Torah: the miracle of Chanukah occurred with oil, which symbolizes the inner dimension of Torah. (“Bread” and “water,” which are essential for human sustenance, symbolize the revealed dimension of Torah. “Wine” represents the secrets of Torah (when wine enters, a secret emerges”), and “oil,” which “floats on top of wine” represents the “secrets of the secrets.”) However, notwithstanding all the qualities of “oil” itself, including the oil that was “sealed with the seal of the Kohen Gadol” – the ultimate goal is to “kindle” the oil and use it to illuminate the Beis Hamikdash, and thereby, the entire world. And this is the miracle of the oil on Chanukah – not just that they found the jar of oil, but that “they kindled from it for eight days;” this is also why the Chanukah candles are placed “at the entrance of one’s home from the outside.” Similarly, this is the “superiority of the light” that emerged “from the darkness” when the Alter Rebbe was released from prison – the dissemination of the secrets of the secrets to the outside, and in a manner of being “sustained from it,” meaning that it permeates a person’s inner core and causes him enjoyment (like bread etc.).
