“And these are the names of the sons of Yisrael etc.” The Alter Rebbe asks a number of questions on the verse, among them: 1) Parashas Vayigash already discusses their descent to Egypt? 2) What is the point of the preface “And these are the names of the sons of Yisrael”? He explains that when the Jewish people went down to Egypt, there were two descents (yarod yaradnu), and when they left Egypt, there were two ascents (a’alcha gam aloh). And the second ascent alludes to the future Redemption. Parashas Vayigash discusses the first descend and ascent (from Egypt), while Parashas Shemos alludes to the second descent into exile and the second ascent, through Moshiach Tzidkeinu. Just like the ultimate purpose of the exile in Egypt was to receive the Torah, so, too, in order to receive the inner dimension of the Torah in the future – there must be “bechomer – this refers to kal v’chomer; uv’leveinim – this refers to libun hilchesa” – Torah study in this era. Because Torah, which is the “names of Hashem,” is the means by which the soul receives the revelations (“names”) from above. And this is the meaning of the Zohar’s statement that all of Torah and mitzvos is “to repair the secret of My name” – to bring down the level of Divine names to be revealed in this lowest world. And the main thing is the level of “His Great Name,” which is the level of Ein Sof, which refers to the level of light which is itself Ein Sof (and not merely the light of Ein Sof). All this happens through our Divine service during the time of exile, the descent to Egypt, through which we reveal the “secret of My name” (“And these are the names”) in the future.

Regarding Yaakov Avinu our Sages said, “Just as his seed is alive, he, too, is alive.” The expression “his seed” connotes “sowing,” regarding which the Sages taught, “a person sows one kav in order to produce many korin.” Meaning, Yaakov educated his students in such a way that every one of them should produce hundreds and thousands like himself, who follows Yaakov’s ways and is “alive.” Similarly, this was the intent of my father-in-law, the Rebbe’s, dedication to Jewish education – that every student should go out and produce “many korin.” An additional point emphasized by the expression “his seed” – “sowing” produces not only an abundance in quantity, but also in quality – producing fruit of a higher quality. This is the response to those who claim that as the years pass things become weaker: to the contrary, when it comes to “sowing,” the higher the quality of the fruits grown, the longer it takes for them to grow. And since all Jews are integrated with one another, even one who is predisposed to one particular kind of “produce,” such as Chessed or Gevurah and the like – is able to produce fruits of a higher quality. As the Rebbe, my father-in-law demanded from everyone – to incorporate all aspects of Divine service. And when “His seed is alive,” then “he, too, is alive”!

Today’s Rambam is the first three chapters of Hilchos Gezelah ve'Aveidah (the Laws of Robbery and Lost Property). 1) The order in the Rambam (“Mishneh Torah”) follows the order in Chumash – first the laws of theft in Parashas Mishpatim, and then the laws of robbery in Parashas Vayikra. However, in the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, which contains “the necessary laws”, the laws of robbery come before the laws of theft, because practically speaking, a robbery (which is done in public) is resolved more quickly than a theft etc. 2) The connection between Gezelah (robbery) and Aveidah (lost property) in Divine service: “Robbery” refers to sin in general, which “rob” from holiness to unholiness. In order to return the item that was robbed, one must search for the “lost object” – the general concept of teshuvah. And then, not only is the situation restored to its original state, but the divine soul becomes the sole ruler of the body, because the other side is transformed into good.

In Revi’i of Parashas Vayechi, on the words, “And I will tell you (what will happen at the end of days),” Rashi writes, “Yaakov sought to reveal the end-time etc.” Seemingly, what would have been the benefit of that? On the contrary, if he had revealed to them back then, that on this day, the 10th of Teves in the year 5741, Moshiach still wouldn’t be here – that would have been terribly demoralizing etc.?! The explanation is: If he had revealed the end-time to them, and told them that Moshiach’s coming depends on whether “they merited” – they would have done everything in their power to hasten the Redemption etc. The lesson for our time is that “all the end-times have passed, and the matter depends only on teshuvah” – that everyone should do teshuvah, and do everything in their power to bring the Redemption!

A) Shelishi of Parashas Vayechi describes how Yosef wanted Yaakov to place his right hand on the head of Menashe, “for this is the firstborn,” but Yaakov left his right hand on the head of Ephraim, because, “his younger brother shall be greater than he.” Klei Yakar explains that “Yosef thought it was more appropriate to bestow the greater blessing on the firstborn son because he receives a double inheritance…and Yaakov replied that Hashem chooses those who are small, and anyone who has a trait of smallness is elevated more by Hashem” – emphasizing the virtue of humility and lowliness. In a similar vein, the end of this portion states, “which I took from the Emori by my sword and by my bow.” Onkelos renders this “bitzlosi uva’usi” – with my prayer and my plea – the service of tefillah, where the law is, “One should not stand to pray except with a solemn mindset” – humility. B) “Which I took from the hand of the Emori (‘the seven nations’) with my sword and with my bow” represents the conquest of the seven emotive attributes through tefillah. Here, there is a special advantage to the “bow” (which can hit even a distant enemy) – it is specifically through “my plea” (which connotes an even greater degree of supplication than “my prayer”) that the hidden elements of kelipah are destroyed.

The daily Chumash for Monday of Parashas Vayechi concludes with, “and may they multiply abundantly like fish, in the midst of the land.” The lesson is that even in “the midst of the land,” worldly matters, one’s Torah study must be like the fish in the sea, whose whole life-force is in the sea – “Torah is his occupation.” And we are promised to be like “these fish which proliferate and multiply, and are unaffected by the evil eye” (Rashi). Tuesday’s Chumash concludes with “which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow,” which Onkelos translates as “with my prayer and with my plea” – tefillah. And along with Gemilus Chassadim (kind deeds) – these are the “three pillars upon which the world stands.” In this vein, it is appropriate to again encourage everyone to establish a “Chabad House” in his own home, as well as to participate in his local Chabad House, and in a manner of “multiplying abundantly like fish,” and with joy, as it says in Sanhedrin in Chapter “Chelek” (which is called Chelek because of its beginning: “All of the Jewish people have a portion (chelek) in the World to Come), on the verse, “he who has a cheerful heart always has a feast” – that “these are masters of Mishna” etc. And immediately, especially through “my prayer and my plea” of “How long will it be until the secret end?”, we will merit the Redemption.

It is told that when the Tzemach Tzedek was a child, he asked the Alter Rebbe question on the pasuk “And Yaakov lived in the land of Egypt”: how was Yaakov able to “live” in Egypt? The Alter Rebbe replied that before Yaakov came to Egypt “he sent Yehudah ahead of him to Joseph, to direct him to Goshen” – to establish a house for Torah study etc.; with this preparation Yaakov was able to “live” even in Egypt. The lesson is: when a Jew thinks about how far his soul has descended, into the “constraints and limitations” of “Egypt”, into exile, he may feel sad etc., but he must know that he can be happy even in such circumstances – “and Yaakov lived” – by studying Torah in a manner of “to Goshen” – to become closer to Hashem.

Asarah B’Teves marks the “the king of Bavel laying siege [‘coming close’] to Yerushalayim”; we must fight to make sure that the king of Bavel can’t even get “close” to Yerushalayim (even before he can reach the wall etc.); otherwise, the results can be severe Rachmana litzlan. The lesson is: Yerushalayim connotes holiness – Yiras Shalem (“complete awe”), while Bavel represents worldly matters, where we can’t see what’s holy and what’s mundane etc. A Jew must know that Yerushalayim and Bavel are separate, and we must not allow any “closeness” between them. In terms of one’s daily service: at the beginning of the day, one says Modeh Ani, davens, and studies Torah – Yerushalayim. But afterwards, when he engages in worldly matters – Bavel – he must know that in essence he has no connection to worldly matters, and he must remain far away from it, without investing his heart in it. In this way, he transforms Bavel into holiness.

Being that fast days are days of teshuvah, there was a custom of old to gather on fast days after Mincha to hear “words of reproof.” As for why this isn’t done anymore in most places – we can judge favorably and explain that there are no greater “words of reproof” than the reading of the Haftorah during Mincha of the fast day. Nevertheless, since that still doesn’t compare to the feeling of awakening that comes from hearing “words of reproof” in the plain sense – we should observe this custom after Mincha tomorrow in some sense, whether by speaking “words of reproof”, at least in brief, or by thinking about words or reproof, and “Hashem joins a good thought to an action”. And then we’ll have the fulfillment of the promise that “All these fast days will be nullified in the future in the days of Moshiach, and moreover, they will be transformed to festivals and days of gladness and joy”. And the Rambam includes this in Yad Hachazakah, a sefer of Halachos (a) to emphasize that fast days were instituted at the outset in order to be abolished in the future, so their nullification doesn’t contradict the principle that Torah and mitzvos cannot be nullified, and (b) because the very fact that the fast days will not only be nullified, but transformed to festivals – this brings a person to do teshuvah out of love, which cause his “intentional sins to become like merits for him”.

Along with everything pertaining to protection and atonement for the Jewish people, a Jew must also have trust in Hashem, which is one of the foundations of the Jewish faith. Though there are categories, “Yisrael, trust in Hashem…House of Aharon…Those who fear Hashem” etc. – all must “trust in Hashem”. And Hashem’s blessings flow based on the degree of a person’s trust – “measure for measure”. But the trust must not remain abstract in one’s will, rather it must permeate one’s intellect and entire being – as the teachings of Chabad emphasize. The main thing is that everyone should have a strong trust that Hashem will surely protect every Jew, in every place and in every respect, and then we will see His protection visibly and physically – and very soon we will greet Moshiach Tzidkeinu.
