Synopsis

Erev Chanukah has a unique connection to Chanukah: Though every there is an obligation to “add” to every Shabbos and Yom Tov from the day before it, in that case, the addition is ancillary to the day itself. But on Chanukah, the set time for lighting the first candle is specifically on Erev Chanukah before nightfall! (We can explain that one explanation is because the Menorah in the Beis Hamikdash was lit during the day). Similarly, as a practical matter: in order to light the first candle at its proper time immediately upon sunset, one must prepare the candles on Erev Chanukah; certainly, when it comes to Mivtza Chanukah – it is imperative to utilize the remaining hours of Erev Chanukah to see to it that every Jew has the ability to light the first candle, which encompasses all eight days of Chanukah, and in the optimal manner – immediately after sunset.

    Synopsis

On the pasuk at the beginning of Parashah Vayeshev, “and Yaakov dwelt” Rashi explains, “When Yaakov sought to dwell in tranquility, the trouble of Yosef sprang upon him”. Being that Hashem promised Yaakov that “I will surely do good with you,” we must say that this wish of Yaakov was fulfilled. We can understand this based on Rashi’s explanation that the “trouble of Yosef” took place eleven years after Yaakov returned to the land of Canaan – during which he “dwelt in tranquility.” Moreover: the fifth aliyah of Vayeshev discusses Yosef’s success in Egypt etc. – which marks the beginning of the nullification of the “trouble of Yosef”. Especially based on the Tzemach Tzedek’s explanation on the verse “and he was a successful man” – that “success” is when Hashem’s brachos comes down from above seder hishtalshelus, without passing through seder hishtalshelus, in which case they come down below directly without delay. And this is also the idea of “spreading the wellsprings to the outside” – that the wellsprings themselves come straight to the outside. The lesson is: Our Sages taught that “All Jews are called by the name Yosef”; thus it is understood that every Jew has the ability to succeed in the service of spreading the wellsprings to the outside, especially being that the name of the leader of our generation is Yosef. And all the success and brachos will come down below practically, to the point of the true and complete Redemption.

    Synopsis

[Continued.] Therefore, as long as Yaakov only heard that Yosef was alive and running Egypt, he didn’t know if he could rely on him; but when he came to Egypt and saw that “Yosef was alive” – that he lived his life the way Yaakov wanted, that Egypt and his position of power had no effect on him, and that he still cried over the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash hundreds of years in the future – he said “I will die this time,” knowing he could rely on Yosef to do his work. And then it became clear that the real purpose of Yosef’s descent to Egypt, as it says in shelishi of Parashas Vayeshev, is “for a deliverance and to preserve life” etc. – to establish a proper place of Torah study in Egypt etc. And the same applies to the soul’s descent into the world in general. Similarly, regarding Yud Tes Kislev: Though the wellsprings “descend” to such a low level that even the body and animal soul can understand and grasp them, the purpose is lehachayos am rav – to give life even to the “am rav”, those on a very low level. With the powers given to us by the Rebbe’im, through our “gemilus chassadim”, even in exile we can establish a place for “toiling in Torah” and for “davening with the congregation”, in such a way that “he had redeemed Me and My children” – that we see G-dliness and true Jewish life!

    Synopsis

Seemingly, the Chumash for Tuesday of Parashas Vayeshev, which talks about Yosef being sold to Egypt – reflects the opposite theme of the redemption of Yud Tes Kislev? We can understand this based on the view in years bygone of Jews relocating from Europe to America. In the days before the first world war, America was viewed as a remote corner, physically and spiritually inferior, and people travelled there only because they had no choice etc. But with time, it came to be seen that when those Jews who had come here “were sent to preserve life,” especially in the wake of the destruction of the second world war, when “Yaakov and his sons went down to Egypt” and they found shuls and study halls in America – at a time that wasn’t possible in Europe. But Jews in America can only serve as “a great deliverance” in Egypt when they remember the shuls and study halls of the shtetl of old, and yearn for it, and model their lives after it, like Yosef, who even in Egypt made sure to educate his children in the ways of his father Yaakov etc.

    Synopsis

When the Alter Rebbe was freed from prison, he wanted to go to the home of the chassid R’ Mordechai Liepler, but was taken to the home of an opponent of Chassidus, who antagonized the Alter Rebbe for a few hours. When the chassidim discovered this, the Alter Rebbe forbade them from causing the man any trouble, and finished the cup of tea the man had prepared for him [on the night of 20 Kislev]. Seemingly, after such a miraculous liberation, how could such a “mistake” have happened, that the Alter Rebbe now suffered even more at the hands of a Jew than he had at the hands of gentiles? We must say that this, too, is part of the liberation: the key point of the liberation was that it wasn’t a victory of one side over the other; rather, “his soul was redeemed in peace” because “the many were with me.” This was expressed at the very beginning of his liberation, when a Jew who opposed Chassidus now acknowledged the liberation and provided refreshments in its honor! The lesson is: every Jew must participate in the work of spreading the wellsprings; today, there can no longer be true opponents, because the opposition was based only on a fear that chassidus would result in leniencies in Torah and mitzvos, but in fact we see that it resulted in keeping Torah and mitzvos more stringently!

    Synopsis

When the Alter Rebbe’s grandson R’ Nachum would tell the story of the imprisonment and release of Yud Tes Kislev, he would begin by describing how the Alter Rebbe spent ten years as a student of the Maggid, followed by five years as the head of the Chevraya Kadisha, followed by twenty years working to spread Chassidus, which was followed by his arrest. Seemingly, why didn’t he begin with the Alter Rebbe’s birth? The answer is because the imprisonment was decreed above not just because there was such a soul in the world, but because that soul started to be revealed in the world, which began when he traveled to the Maggid. The lesson is that as long as a person doesn’t encounter challenges, doubts and opposition, that shows he hasn’t yet begun to fulfill his mission in the world. How does one begin fulfilling his mission? By being a student and mekabel for ten years, as we find by the Alter Rebbe: only after setting out to be a student, and experiencing hardship, did he come to the ultimate spiritual elevation. And this applies all the more so to every individual: one’s ultimate revelation depends on, and begins, specifically when he involves himself in work that requires toil.

    Synopsis

The inner dimension of Torah was studied in every generation, particularly in the generation of Rashbi, who studied Torah in such a way that “I am one with Him, I have passion for Him” etc. – which refers to the of the inner dimension of Torah, which he revealed to his colleagues. And if Rashbi was able to “exempt the entire world from judgment” – by having self-sacrifice for the people of his generation (like Moshe, who advocated even for those who sinned with the golden calf – “erase me from Your book”) – certainly, then, his study of the inner dimension of Torah impacted his entire generation. And since the time of the AriZal, “it is permitted and a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom.” However, in the AriZal’s time it still didn’t reach the “outside;” its effect was from being revealed in a particular place. What the Alter Rebbe added (due to the necessity of the time – like his analogy of grinding the crown jewel in order to heal the prince) was to spread the wellsprings themselves everywhere, even to the “outside.” And in the redemption of Yud Tes Kislev, this was brought about by the government itself: the darkness itself proclaimed that the inner dimension of Torah must be disseminated.

    Synopsis

    1) The end of the fourth aliyah of Parashas Vayishlach states, “And Yaakov came whole to Shechem…” (after concluding his service in Lavan’s house). Rashi explains, “Whole in his body…whole in his money…whole in his Torah,” and the Midrash adds, “whole in his sons.” Being that “the deeds of the fathers are a sign for the sons,” this is a lesson for every Jew: one’s Divine service must be such that he reaches a state of “wholeness” in all these areas! 2) Chassidus explains that Yaakov sent angels to Esav to inform him that he had already completed his service of birurim and was ready for the Redemption; similarly, every Jew sends the message to Esav, that for his part, he’s ready for the Redemption, through his service of Torah and mitzvos. Had we merited it, the Redemption would have come in Yaakov’s time, but in practice, the angels got involved...however, now that the Jewish people have already experienced the birth pangs of Moshiach, certainly Moshiach will come right now!

    Synopsis

Today’s Rambam discusses a number of Rabbinic decrees enacted in the times of the second Beis Hamikdash regarding impurity, including that “when one whose hands were pure touched one of the Holy Writings, his hands become shniyos, and impart impurity to terumah etc.” Similarly, “tefillin straps when connected to the tefillin” and the like. The question is: we find that the kohanim wore (head) tefillin during their service every day, and similarly, they read from a Sefer Torah in the Beis Hamikdash! True, with regards to touching tefillin and a Sefer Torah in the Mikdash, the Rambam has already told us that the decree doesn’t apply in the Mikdash. But the question still stands with regards to the fact that, like everyone else, kohanim wore their tefillin (and read from the Sefer Torah) outside the Mikdash, too. Seemingly, then, every kohen would have been obligated to immerse his hands in a kosher mikveh before entering the Mikdash – yet we don’t find such an obligation? And surprisingly, this issue is not discussed in detail in any Mishna or Gemara, nor in the Rishonim or Acharonim!

Among the gifts given to a groom should be a tzedakah-pushka, which constantly reminds us of the mitzvah of tzedakah; it should be placed in a prominent place in the home, to demonstrate that this is a home where tzedakah and kind deeds are provided to those in need. 2. We should increase in tzedakah for assisting brides, and all the more so in assuring the wedding is “wealthy” in the spiritual sense – by keeping the laws of family purity. In addition, we should see to it that every place have a beautiful and clean mikveh (as seen from the story of the Rebbe Nishmaso Eden who found hair floating in the mikveh in Rostov etc.) – so that the body and animal soul will want to fulfill the mitzvah (although the mitzvah must be performed because it’s a commandment of Hashem, nevertheless, when it comes to running away from evil, we must use all available means).
