    Synopsis

In the epistle beginning Katonti Mikol Hachasadim, the Alter Rebbe explains that precisely because Hashem showed Yaakov “kindnesses and truth” Yaakov became small, because “whoever is [brought] exceedingly close to Hashem… ought to be ever humbler”. As our Sages said, “One who gestures before the king etc.”, meaning, when one stands before the King, even a slight movement is considered rebellion against the throne, Rachmana litzlan. When Hashem shows closeness to “a commoner who is despised and lowly among men, a disgraceful creature cast on the dunghill,” the effect is two-fold: (a) from the receiver’s perspective, he feels humbler, and (b) from Heaven’s perspective, the greater Divine revelation diminishes the ability for any independent entity to exist. This is similar to the reason labor is forbidden on Shabbos, though it is a mitzvah during the week – because on Shabbos (a) there’s a greater Divine revelation, which nullifies independent existence, and (b) the world recognizes its own lowliness. This is also why we say “Pardon us…for we have sinned” specifically in Shemoneh Esrei – because it is precisely when one stands before the King that he realizes that what was previously acceptable is considered sin. Similarly, this is why one feels “culpable” when he makes the bracha of Hagomel thanking Hashem for deliverance from danger.

    Synopsis

The unique approach of the Mitteler Rebbe in terms of his method of spreading the wellsprings was that he personally devoted himself to disseminating his maamarim in writing and printing them, in such a way that anyone could buy them and learn them, even those of limited ability etc. (as understood from his many letters about this). And this is the lesson from Yud Kislev: to devote ourselves personally, involving our own bodies, to all aspects of spreading the wellspring to the outside and finding ways to bring a maamar or teaching or directive to every single Jew!

    Synopsis

    1) The Nasi of the Jewish people empowers his followers, his students and his students’ students, to carry out everything in which he was the “head;” since “the Nasi is everything” – all Jews eventually must follow his ways (even those who temporarily believe they don’t want to). 2) A Jewish leader provides for all the needs of the Jewish people; he provides it according to his understanding of their need (which is better than their own understanding of their need), and he provides it in accordance with each person’s ability. Thus, we can understand that despite his lofty level, the connection to him – in his generation and in subsequent generations – is a connection through which one receives all his needs etc., and through which one also passes on what he receives to others. 3) The greatest pleasure for [my father-in-law the Rebbe] is when he sees that “his seed is alive,” that they live for the same matters that he lived for – ensuring that every Jew, even those who are merely “called by the name Yisrael” (i.e., who believe that “Yisrael” is only a nickname for them) should come to keep Torah and mitzvos, and influence others to follow suit. And then, “he, too, is alive,” in the same place that “his seed is alive” – in this physical world. 4) The answer to those who ask how we can endure the last moments of exile, when the leaders of the Jewish people have left us Rachmana litzlan: As my father-in-law the Rebbe pronounced after his father’s passing, “he will not abandon his flock,” and “just as he was standing and serving” until now, “so, too, here, he is standing and serving” and awakening abundant mercy and giving them blessing and strength etc., just as when he was alive in this world.

    Synopsis

[Continued.] (1) The abovementioned effects of studying Chassidus are indispensable to Divine service – for a person to do what he must and be “one who serves Hashem” properly. But it all pertains to the revealed aspect of the person (“land”), and ultimately, it doesn’t render him completely nullified; he remains an “entity who loves.” (2) Then there’s another effect of studying Chassidus, that it renders a person completely nullified, he’s completely “covered” by his life-force – G-dliness (like fish are covered by the sea. For this, it’s not enough to study Nigleh (where it’s possible to forget the Giver of the Torah, chas v’shalom), rather, one must study Chassidus in abundance, to “know the G-d of your father.” And since this aspect of studying Chassidus isn’t absolutely indispensable to one’s practical service, it is like “pearls” which are merely an adornment, and which one can do without. However, that applies only when one is in his own four cubits. By contrast, when he’s about to go to the king’s palace, he must prepare himself accordingly, including with pearls! The analogue: we are on the verge of Redemption, “behold he is standing behind our wall,” which will be the “wedding” of every Jew and Hashem, and to prepare accordingly, we must adorn ourselves with “pearls” as well – we must become completely nullified, and for that we must study Chassidus abundantly!

    Synopsis

My father-in-law the Rebbe likened Chassidus to pearls found in the depths of the sea, and coals, which provide warmth and illumination, are found in the depths of the earth. To extract the coals, the workers need an overseer who directs them where to dig etc. They can rely on the overseer’s wisdom if they carry out his instruction exactly, but to remain alive, each worker needs his own personal connection to the air on the surface. And he concluded that Chassidus provides warmth and illumination like coals. The reason he specifically focused on explaining the analogy of coals: studying Chassidus has two effects: 1) like coals, Chassidus provides warmth, which is a sign of life. But that’s not enough, because one may be alive, but his life might be like that of an animal, meaning, he doesn’t go beyond his nature, in which case he is “one who serves Him not.” But Chassidus also provides illumination – enabling a person to see that he must go against and transcend his nature, to “serve G-d” and “with all your might.” And this comes through toil – digging in the depths of the earth. Since this is a new service, we need the Rebbe’im, the “overseers,” who prepare the plans for carrying out this service. But it’s not enough to submit one’s will to the “overseer” and rely only on him – because one needs his own connection to the life source! In simple terms: everyone must personally set fixed times to actually study Chassidus (and Nigleh), and toil in it until he feels he truly understands it etc.; he must not just learn it superficially, nor can he rely on his knowledge acquired throughout his life. And since there cannot be a pause in life, he must do this every day!

    Synopsis

The Gemara describes the greatness of the word U’paratzta – “not like Avraham…and not like Yitzchak…but like Yaakov, of whom it is written [in the first aliyah of Parashas Vayetzei] ‘And you shall break out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south.’” The word U’paratzta connotes “breaking” something down; since the Torah says U’paratzta, it expresses breaking down something that according to Torah is considered a building of holiness (because deep down, something that’s a building of le’umas zeh constitutes destruction, and knocking it down constitutes building). Seemingly, then, what is the benefit of breaking down such a building? The answer is that the “building” here means the “middle path”, which is the proper path according to Torah; nevertheless, in the time of exile we must “break it down” – by going beyond all limitations, including the boundaries within holiness. And this is the basic point of the Maamar Basi L’gani 5710: to be victorious over the shtus of le’umas zeh and the doubled and redoubled darkness of exile – it’s not enough to follow the middle path (a holy “building”). Rather, we must adopt the path of shtus of holiness. The lesson is: Torah study and mitzvos must be in a manner of U’paratzta – without limits! In this way will very soon merit the coming of Moshiach, who is called the “breaker.”

    Synopsis

    1) Parashas Toldos is named for the beginning of the parashah, “And these are the generations of Yitzchak”; seemingly, based on the order of the parashiyos, the previous parashah, which similarly begins, “These are the descendants of Yitzchak” ought to have been called Toldos, while this week’s parashah ought to have been called “Yitzchak”?! The name Toldos puts a greater emphasis on practical deeds because “the descendants of tzaddikim (and ‘Your people are all tzaddikim’) are good deeds”, whereas “Noach” is more connotative of reward, peace of mind and body etc. 2) The beginning of Yitzchak’s bracha to Yaakov is “And may Hashem give you etc.” (in the sixth aliyah of Parashas Toldos), and as Rashi explains, “May He give and repeatedly give,” meaning, the brachos are in a manner of milechatcila ariber, and every Jew is similarly blessed.

    Synopsis

Every individual must practically fulfill the mission incumbent on him. For example, if someone was appointed as a mashpia, it doesn’t’ just mean he has the ability to be influence his mushpa’im, but aht he should actually have an influence. And whatever excuses he has—those are his personal issues, and they’re not the fault of his mushpa’im! Since “more than the calf wishes to suck, the cow wants to suckle” it is understood that the sign of a true mashpia is that he wants to be mashpia, and that the desire is expressed practically. And the same applies to someone appointed to run an institution and the like. Certainly, everyone will succeed in their mission, and in a manner of milechatchila ariber (in accordance with the instruction of the baal haheilulah of 13 Tishrei); the point isn’t to be angry at anyone etc.—because that’s not what chassidim do, and certainly those striving to be chassidim—rather, the point is that the words should have their desired effect. And may it be Hashem’s will that these words will also be accepted in a manner of milechatchila ariber.

    Synopsis

Yitzchak’s service was digging wells; he dug three wells, Esek, Sitnah, and Rechovos [as it says in shelishi of Parashas Toldos) in order to reveal the “living waters” covered by the ground. This is the service of toiling to reveal the spark of Yiddishkeit (the “living waters”) in every Jew, even one whose spark of Yiddishkeit is so concealed that he opposes G-dliness. Even if one helped this Jew uncover his vitality and passion, and the person claims, “the water is ours” – he uses it for the “Pelishtim”, and even this happens a second time, and logic seemingly dictates that there’s no reason to continue working with him – nevertheless, one must not give up. Rather, he must continue working with him, without being limited by intellect, because Yitzchak, and likewise every Jew, “is born from a holy drop,” and is connected to Hashem with a bond that transcends measure and limitation! Eventually, he will succeed at revealing the “living waters” within that Jew, and then both of them will call it “Rechovos” etc. The three Batei Hamikdashos correspond to the three wells: the first two didn’t last, because the world wasn’t refined enough to contain it; therefore, the way to prepare for the third and eternal Beis Hamikdash is “Rechovos” – Yitzchak’s service of refining the world itself and elevating it to holiness.
